Chapter 3

The car ride was a quiet one, the only sound coming from the hum of the engine and soft music playing lightly from the radio. ‘Cordelia?’ Skylar asked making me look towards him. ‘Yes?’ ‘Do you remember the names of your parents?’ I paused and tried to think back to the few happy memories I had of them, but I don’t recall their names being in any of them, the harder I tried to remember a sudden headache began. ‘No,’ I replied rubbing my head. ‘Are you alright?’ ‘Yeah, just a slight headache.’ ‘If you’re up for it we can do a test and that will let us know what your bloodline is. Maybe if we find that out you might have a relative you can stay with.’ Nodding my reply my mind went elsewhere. Another relative? A place to live? Living a life that had no beating, no feeding others, a place where I was treated right. It could mean I would be happy again, happy and safe. ‘Benny, I need a full report of the events that brought us here. I need to review a few details before we file it away for good.’ ‘Sure thing,’ the blonde replied. ‘Axel can you please follow up with the Alpha? I believe he was the one that had brought us the rumour.’ ‘Yes.’ ‘Thank-you I appreciate it.’ Skylar then went back to his phone and started texting someone named Sam. Before I looked away I noticed that he was telling them he needed space. A girlfriend maybe? It really wasn’t any of my business, I probably wouldn’t be staying there long enough anyway. Not to mention why was I even considering anything between me and Skylar? We had just met not to mention I was a slave. I kept my hands on the box from my parents and sat quietly just keeping my thoughts to myself. ‘Where did you get that box?’ Skylar asked looking at me. ‘My mother gave it to me when I was four. Something about it being special just like me.’ ‘What’s inside?’ ‘I don’t know. She told me not to open it until I turn 21.’ I paused, ‘do you know how long I will be staying with you?’ ‘A week to a month. It really depends on what the blood tests say. You will need to transition as well. I can’t let you go as you are now.’ ‘Why not?’ ‘Most fledglings die when they turn 25. They need the blood to survive you can’t live as what you are.’ ‘Oh.’ ‘Why didn’t Mr Akuma turn you?’ ‘I’m not sure.’ ‘Another thing to take up with him at our follow-up meeting then.’ As the forest started to clear I heard that same voice in the back of my mind, ‘Time is running out’. It sent shivers down my spine, whatever it was it was following me, no matter where I went. The trip took a little over an hour at most without stopping. The town was brightly lit all around with people walking on the streets in all different directions. This was a vampire’s town, no other town would have most of the residents walking around like this at night. The town name came into view: Springvale. Standing right beside the sign was the shadow figure from before holding his right hand up to his left wrist. 'Time is running out.' Looking around I don't think anyone but me saw him, making fear set in. Glancing over my shoulder, it was already gone, making me question if it was ever there in the first place. Shaking my head slightly I got out of that thought and then something occurred to me. Springvale was the place where the royal family lived, I heard some of the other maids at Mr Akuma's house talk about it. The royal family ruled over all vampires as I understood it. Mr Akuma was in charge of one region only. Did that mean Skylar was prince or the king? That would make sense since Mr Akuma did call him Sire. I was rescued by the king. As we slowed down a house came into view towards the end of the town. It had a big iron clad gate that swung open as the car approached. The house itself was a big three storey mansion that had four cars parked out the front. We came to a stop beside one of the cars and everyone got out. I hesitated as the door shut behind me. Looking up at the house it made me nervous thinking about what will happen to me. I knew Skylar wouldn’t make me a slave but what happens if the tests didn’t show up anything or if I didn’t make it through the change? My eye caught a quick glimpse of a figure standing in the window right at the top. I didn’t see much before it vanished but she had blonde hair. ‘Come on Cordelia we need to get inside.’ I nodded starting to realise the sun was coming up shortly. The doors swung open and the vestibule was huge. It connected with a grand staircase that went all the way up to the third floor. Benny and Axel both turned off to the left careening to what looked like the kitchen. ‘Follow me, I’ll show you to the room you’ll be staying in,’ Skylar gestured towards the staircase. As we ascended the staircase each corridor I looked down was filled with beautiful grey timber flooring. The curtains were white in colour and how they kept all of them clean was amazing. On the top floor there were very few doors; 3 to be exact. Whereas the other floors had a lot more. He pointed to the right,’ that’s my office through there as well as the library.’ I followed him to the left and we made our way down the corridor and stopped infront of a door. ‘This is your room. Mine is the one right beside yours.’ I glanced in the direction of the doorway opposite the room I was staying in. Turning back around I nodded a thanks to Skylar before walking inside the room.
