As the movie played, Skylar adjusted his position from sitting to lying. The bed moved a bit when he got more comfortable but stopped when he stopped.
‘I’m sorry about earlier,’ he said.
‘For what?’
‘The way Sam acted. She can be hard to get along with sometimes.’
‘She didn’t seem too happy about something.’
‘Yeah we had a fight earlier yesterday.’
‘Is she your girlfriend?’ I asked, my heart started pounding.
‘Ex, but she doesn’t want to accept it.’
‘Oh.’
‘Yeah.’
We went silent after that and watched the movie. For me it was mostly background noise, my mind was whirling and reliving everything that had happened within the last 24 hours. If I had told myself I’d be here, I wouldn’t have believed it. Leaning back against the pillows, I tried my best to listen to the movie and tune out my inner voice. Out of the corner of my eyes I could see Skylar mouthing the words to the movie.
The sound started to drone and fade into background noise. I glanced around the room as the words completely disappeared. Reaching out my hand to tap Skylar to check if he'd noticed it but he wasn’t beside me anymore, he wasn’t even in the room.
‘Skylar?’ I asked, looking around.
He had just vanished. One minute he was there and now he was gone. It didn’t make sense. My heart raced as the hairs on the back of my neck started to stand on end.
The room was dark, besides the glow of the TV, the daytime shutters doing a good job of keeping out the sun. swinging my legs off the edge of the bed, I got to my feet.
A shadow circled around the room sticking to the walls. I felt like it was stalking me. At first I thought it was my own shadow, but it didn’t add up with the way it moved and then it came out from the wall forming a solid black shape. As the black mass swirled, it started to form the structure of a person, except it had no features. A faceless person.
The TV flickered, pitching the room into complete darkness for a second. As the picture came back on, I looked down and I was covered in blood. The blood soaked my shirt and was covering my arms.
‘This is who you are,’ a voice whispered in my ear.
‘No,’ I said, shaking my head. ‘I won’t kill.’
‘You will. It is your destiny.’
‘I’ll change it then.’
‘You can’t.’
‘I can and I will!’ I yelled.
The shadow moved in front of me, making me freeze in place. The figure was completely black, swirling like smoke and I could see through it slightly. A voice drifted from somewhere within the creature.
‘You won’t be able to change it no matter how hard you try. It’s set in stone.’
The bedroom walls around me faded away and I was standing in a field surrounded by dead bodies. Swords and guns lay scattered on the ground, a fire burned to my right. It was a warzone, a war that was causing a lot of deaths.
‘What is this?’ I asked, my voice echoing in my ears.
‘Your future.’
‘No,’ I whispered.
There were three other girls standing in front of me. They were looking in the opposite direction, so I couldn’t make out any features on their faces, but I could see blood all over their clothes. One held fire in her hand, the girl that stood in the middle had dirt falling from her hand like sand and the third looked like she was caught in a tornado, her hair and clothes swirling around her.
‘No!’ I screamed as a big tidal wave came and washed away the bodies.
I closed my eyes tightly and put my hands over my ears. This wasn’t happening, it couldn’t be my future.
A knocking noise made me open my eyes and I was back in Skylar’s room. Skylar was standing with the door slightly open as he spoke to someone out in the hallway. Rubbing my eyes, I sat up and glanced over at the clock. The time read 18:05, meaning it was 6pm. I had fallen asleep at some point. The shutters started lifting for the night indicating that the sun had gone down.
‘You have to,’ whined a female voice I recognised.
It must be Sam at his door. For someone who was supposed to be his ex, she sure comes around a lot.
‘I’m sorry Sam, but whatever we had, whatever we were is over.’
‘But why? We had one argument before you left, then you came back and now you want nothing to do with me.’
‘That fight showed me what the future looks like with you and it wasn’t something I wanted anymore.’
‘Please Sky, we’re meant to be together.’
‘No, now please just go.’
He stepped back inside shutting the door behind him. As he ran his hands through his hair, he looked up at me.
‘Sorry if we woke you,’ he apologised.
‘That’s alright, not like I was dreaming about something amazing anyway.’
‘Yeah you were tossing and turning a lot.’
‘Did I keep you up?’
‘No, I only noticed when I woke up. Must have been an intense dream.’
‘You could say that.’
Skylar moved towards the bathroom, ‘I’m going to take a shower.’
‘Sure.’
As the door clicked shut and the water started to run I got to my feet and stared out the window. The sun had completely gone down leaving the sky mostly dark besides a slight golden glow in the distance where the sun used to be. Looking down I noticed a courtyard directly below the window. The courtyard had a sitting area with two nice wicker couches. Just beyond the courtyard was a maze of hedges that held small pockets of gardens.
From here I could see one looked like a rainforest, one had roses everywhere and one had a pond. I had never seen anything that beautiful in my life.
‘Do you like it?’ Skylar’s voice came from behind me.
He smelt like soap and fresh rain the closer he got.
‘It’s beautiful,’ I said.
‘My mum had it done so we had somewhere to escape, even if it was for just a minute.’
‘That sounds so nice.’
‘I can take you down there later, but first I was hoping to take you to town to get some clothes.’
I glanced down at myself and realised I was still wearing the same leggings and shirt from the night before. When I got my belongings, I didn’t really have any clothes to take with me. Which meant I had nothing to change into.
‘I don’t have any money though.’
‘That’s alright I’ll get them for you.’
‘Are you sure?’
‘Yeah, I think you deserve to have some good things come your way.’
‘You’ve already done that for me though by getting me out of there in the first place.’
I rested my hand on his arm, letting the warmth flow into me. The more I felt this feeling, the more I enjoyed it, almost craved it. Skylar took a step forward, getting closer to me. The smell of rain getting stronger, filling my nose with the delicious smell.
A knock came from the door making me jump back a little. My face turned slightly red realising how close we were.
‘Come in,’ Skylar shouted.
‘You ready to go?’ Benny asked, walking through the door.
‘Yes, let’s get going.’
I followed Skylar out of the room with Benny in toe, wondering what shops he was going to take me to.
