Chapter 20
Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath, trying to focus on the forest I had met the shadow figure in previously. I had never tried contacting him before, it had always been him reaching out to me, but I hoped that it could work both ways.
Once I reopened my eyes, I was standing by a giant lake. At first, I didn’t think it worked, but I knew my physical body was in a stone room underground.
‘You are back,’ stated the shadow figure, stepping out from behind a tree.
‘I must admit, it is strange to have you call me instead of the other way around,’ he went on.
‘You weren’t my first option or my second, but you’re the only one I have that I can talk to.’
‘How can I help?’
‘A few days ago, you said you could help me get out of my predicament.’
‘That is correct.’
‘Well, I’m here asking you for your help.’
‘What happened to this Sky person? I thought he was going to rescue you?’
I ground my teeth together, biting back any insult in case he decided to take back what he offered.
‘I might be able to assist you. However, you need to do something for me.’
‘What’s that?’
‘I will send someone to rescue you. This person you must take back with you when you return.’
‘Why would I do that?’
‘When the time is right, he will bring you to me.’
‘What makes you think I would ever agree to that?’
‘As far as I see it, you have no other choice.’
Pain coursed through my body, ripping me out of the lake area and back to reality.
‘Who were you talking to?’ Mr Akuma shouted.
‘No one. I must have been talking in my sleep.’
He glared at me as Mr Todd touched a red-hot metal pole to the side of my leg. I cried out in pain, my hunger growing the more I was put through this torture.
‘Why don’t you just own up to what you can do?’
‘I still don’t know what you’re talking about.’
‘You’re hungry. I can sense it. It won’t be long till you will cave to me.’
‘Watch me.’
Mr Akuma growled and walked out of the room with Mr Todd close behind him. I tried to relax my mind, tried to ignore the pain, tried my hardest to concentrate.
When I finally got myself back to the lake, I was exhausted.
‘Do we have a deal?’ he asked.
‘Yes.’
‘Perfect. I need you to say our agreement out loud. Saying both our names.’
‘I don’t know your name.’
‘It’s Damon. You don’t need last names. Then we will seal the pact with blood.’
He held out a knife and sliced his hand. Black blood started to flow freely from his new wound.
‘I, Cordelia, promise to take your sender, my rescuer, back home with me, till the day comes when he is to bring me to you, Damon.’ I sliced my hand and we held out our hands, linking our fingers together. His blood moved between our palms; I could feel it go into my cut just like I felt mine go into his.
‘It is done.’
‘What now?’
‘Be prepared.’
He faded away as the scene disappeared and I was back in the same stone room as before. Be prepared? How could I prepare for something if I couldn’t tell how it was going to happen? I didn’t want to make a deal with him, but every day that Mr Akuma appeared he would let me know how busy he was keeping Sky. I was starting to get scared that he would never show up. How could he if he didn’t even know I was gone?
Laying in silence I started to hear footsteps in the distance. The closer the footsteps got, the more I waited with anticipation, but nothing came through the door. Suddenly, a boy walked into my line of sight. He was tall with short brown hair and jade green eyes. I couldn’t tell how old he was, but he had to be only a little older than me. As he smiled, I could feel the breath leave my body. I had to admit he was good looking.
‘I was told I would find you here,’ his voice deep with an accent I couldn’t recognise.
‘Who are you?’ I whispered.
‘Lukas. Damon sent me.’
‘How did you get in?’
‘I’ve got my ways. I hear you’re looking for some help to break out of this joint?’
‘How did Damon know where I was?’
‘That deal you made with him acts like a homing beacon until the pact is fulfilled.’
‘So, he knows where I am all the time now?’
‘Yeah, pretty much.’
‘Great.’
Lukas leaned over me and got real close just looking into my eyes. I could smell him and it smelt like forest and rain. The vein in his neck was standing out at me, making my mouth water.
‘You know, if he had mentioned how good looking you are I would have come sooner,’ he chuckled as my cheeks went pink.
‘Are you going to help me or not?’
He walked around the table and broke the locks with his hands as if they were nothing. Sitting up, I felt the effects of no sustenance and loss of blood hit me like a truck, almost making me pass out.
‘Wow, take it easy.’
Lukas was holding me upright, my head near his neck and I could feel the beating of his heart. My fangs elongated and my body took over before I could stop it. I bit into his neck deep and drank. His blood was surprisingly sweet, tasting like chocolate. The more I drank, the more I sensed something building inside me. All at once, something released from my fangs like venom and I latched on tighter. His blood was delicious. I could feel it giving me my strength back. Realising what I was doing, I stopped licking the wound clean so it could close and I stared at him worried about what I had just done.
