-Phoenix- I knew better than anyone how irritating it could be when you couldn’t sleep. Nightmares kept me up much of the night, and I had learned to adapt to not sleeping much. But there was no way I was letting Hope go without sleep. Even though she insisted she didn’t need my help, I wouldn’t leave the room until I was certain she had fallen asleep. At first, she seemed strangely alert. Her whole body was tense as she lay there, and I could hear how fast her heart was beating. She must still be uneasy about me, I thought. That was why she was having trouble falling asleep. But slowly, she got used to me, and she fell asleep. It calmed me to watch her, which was a strange feeling. I didn’t feel calm. Ever.
