On the bus heading to school the next day, my mind was fogged. I had another dream last night. It was still just flashes of scenes but this time somewhere different. There was a caramel brown wolf sitting next to a smoky gray wolf. The brown one laid their head on the grays neck. Then there was a scene of wolves laying on the ground bloody and dead. The dream felt so real. The smell of blood still lingered in my nose. As the bus pulled up to the school my eyes immediately fell onto the tall handsome boy with blue eyes. Alex was leaning against the wall of the school, talking to Sam and Sasha. I was one of the last kids off the bus. Stacy had sat a few seats in front of me so she was already in school with her friends.
Alex and I locked eyes. Not sure where we stood I ducked my head and proceeded toward the school.
"How are you doing today princess?" His deep voice beside me made me jump. His hand immediately found the small of my back. Holding me as he grumbled a chuckle. I shot daggers at him before I started to giggle.
"Don't scare me like that!" I said playfully slapping him on the chest. We started walking towards the school. I noticed Sam and Sasha fell into step behind us. After thinking about what he said yesterday, how he couldn't sit by and what others bully. I think Alex does deserve a second chance.
"Why are you always hitting me?" He asked while rubbing his chest.
"Why are you always doing things to make me hit you?" I asked back with my own cocky smile. As we entered the school Alex tried to put his arm around my shoulders. But I easily stepped out of his reach. Glancing up at him. He just gave me a knowing look, but I could still see the sadness in his eyes. We walked side by side with each other to my locker neither of us saying a word, but it was a comfortable silence between us. I stop at my locker expecting him to keep walking to his as well. In sted, he just leans up against the locker next to mine. A little confused I asked, "What are you doing?"
Alex just looked at me like it was common sense and said: "I'm walking you to class." Just going with it I nodded and grabbed my books. Before we start walking Alex takes my books. "Here I'll carry them for you." Once again I try to protest but it was no use, he carried them anyways. By the time we made it to class, I had Called him every name known to man, in my head of course. He set my books down on my desk and shot me a smile. I sat down next to Sasha with clenched fists.
"What's the matter?" She asks like there is no response from me to be mad.
"Is he always like this?" I asked exasperatedly. Sasha glanced back towards Alex and Sam. They looked like they were deep in conversation.
"Who Alex? I thought a girl like you would expect that kind of treatment," said Sasha with a roll of her eyes. What is with people in this school thinking I'm some 'princess'?
"No, I don't I've had to do things for myself for a long time. I don't need someone to carry my books or fight my fights. I can do that myself." I snapped a bit and that was all that was said.
Mrs. Winston stood at the front of the class holding a stack of papers shaking her head. "I don't know how to feel about these test." She finally spoke after standing there for five minutes. "I really don't know. Should I be happy that there is at least one person in this classroom who knows what we just spent weeks on? Or should I be upset that one person wasn't even here when I taught it?" Mrs. Winston explained as she passed back the test. "Because you see I don't know if it's the way I'm teaching you or not enough effort on yours." Handing me my test I looked and saw a hundred percent. Sasha let out a whistle as she looks over at my score. Feeling nervous, that both Sasha and the teacher just called me out on being the one with the perfect score, I shrunk down in my seat.
Back at my locker, alone this time, a boy came up to me. "Hey, their sweetheart you busy Friday night?" He asked overly trying to act cool. Was he really trying to ask me out?
"Sorry I'm busy." was all I said and turned to head to my next class. The boy then had the courage to try and grab my butt. I dropped my books and in one fluid motion, I had him pinned to the lockers with his arm behind his back. Even with him trying to get free I calmly said, "You want to through cheap pick up lines at me go ahead but don't ever touch me. Understand?"
"Yes, it won't happen again I promise." He said pain in his voice. Pushing away from him I looked around everyone was watching me. Including Alex and his friends. Embarrassed by my outburst I quickly picked up my books and headed for class. Lucky it was study hall and in the library. Finding the farthest table in the back I got comfortable. I was collecting my thought when Alex and his friends walked in. Sasha immediately sat across from me. She looked excited. While the boys followed after her. Alex looking to many emotions to settle on just one sat next to me, and Sam just looked annoyed while sitting down next to Sasha.
"Girl that was awesome. Maybe your not such a princess after all." Sasha said settling into her chair. It felt good to hear someone finally figure out I'M NOT A PRINCESS. Alex didn't say anything. Just sat there staring at the Algebra homework we were given. Soon after attendance was taken Sasha and Sam moved onto the computers. Leaving me alone with a still brooding Alex.
After five minutes I told him "It's 34." He gave me a blank look. "The answer for number five is 34," I explained pointing with my pencil. Alex looked back to the problem and scribbled down my answer.
"Thanks" He grumbled
"Well, you have been on that same problem for ten minutes now figured you could use some help," I said jokingly trying to lighten up his mood. It didn't seem to work, because Alex stayed silent. Seeming like he had already dived into the next problem.
"You shouldn't have done that," Alex grumbled. I was a little confused at first on what he meant.
"Because I gave you the answer to one question?" I asked genuinely not knowing what he was talking about. Alex heaved a sigh, rubbing a hand across his face. Unsatisfied with my response.
"No, What happened in the hall. You shouldn't have done that." Alex snapped at me. Every word Alex spoke seemed to anger himself more. This made my blood start to heat back up.
"Excuse me?" I put down my pencil and turn toward him giving him my full attention. "Alex I told you yesterday I fight my own battles. So don't sit here trying to make me out as the bad guy. I could have done worse to the kid but I figured this school already had one overly violent student, it didn't need another." I was not able to take this side of Alex right now. Standing up I gathered my things. Going to the librarian I made an excuse to let me out of here. 'Garate I got driven out of my favorite place in the world. How did this happen?' Giving up hope of being able to step a foot into the library this class period vanished. Taking my book I went to the one place in this school I knew it would be quiet and private.
I don't know how long I sat in the stairwell reading my book, but I jumped when a hand tapped my shoulder. Squatted down next to me was Alex holding his hands up in surrender. "Just came to tell you that it’s lunch time." Seeing Alex now that I've calmed down made me happy. He cared enough to come and find me. He sat there just looking at me. Is that it? If he thinks he can brush what happened in the library under the rug. He has another thing coming.
“Thanks but I’m not hungry.” He looked away from me, down to the ground.
“I also wanted to say that I am sorry. I acted like a jerk back there. In honesty, I like that you can stand up for yourself. It makes my temper flare when I see guys treating you like that. You are an amazing girl Allie and from the first time I laid eyes on you I was hypnotized. Since then I can't stay away for you. Please give me another chance. If I start acting like a controlling jerk I won't bother you anymore." His apology thru me for a moment. He likes me. I've hypnotized him. I didn't know how to respond. It was like my brain just shut off. Not knowing what to do I stood up and held out my hand to him. Smiling a boyish smile he took my hand.
"Come on, let's go get some lunch.” I said pulling him to the door. We walked hand in hand to the cafeteria.
