Ch.3 Allison

Misty had dropped Stacy and me off at school that morning. Wishing us both a good day as we stepped out of the car. The brick building stood tall compared to the houses around it. Stacy had walked me to the office. Then she too left me on my own. Getting my schedule and locker information from the older receptionist. I was on my way to find my locker. The school was a two-story High School upstairs with the Middle School downstairs, making it easier to find my way around.   I had just finished putting my things in my locker and was heading to my first class, Algebra, when a voice caught my ear. "Allie!" knowing the voice instantly, I didn't stop to see who was calling for me. A hand wrapped around my free hand, stopping me. I drew away instantly. Wiping around to see Alex standing with his hands in the air surrendering. "Right, sorry, I forgot." That was all he said. I turned back around, heading back towards my class. "Allie, wait!" This time he jumped in front of me. "What's wrong? Did I do something to upset you?" He looked hurt like a little kid, not sure if he was in trouble or not. Caving in, I stopped right. He doesn't know that I know his true end game. Taking a deep breath to keep my voice calm and low so that nobody walking by could hear me. "Look, I'm new. I don't have time to be your flavor of the week, okay. So find someone else, cuz I'm not that kind of girl." The look on his face was a complete shock. Taking his silence as a cue that he wasn't going to respond. I moved around him and headed for class.   I was the first one in the classroom. Taking my assigned seat, I pulled my book out while I waited. Like no time had passed, the warning bell sounded. The classroom door was flooded with kids coming in. When I thought the whole class was here, three more filed in. I let out a deep breath as I sunk into my seat. It was Alex and two others. The boy from yesterday, I believe his name was Sam, and a short brunette girl. They were laughing as they walked in.  Uhg, his smile, I wish he would smile at me like that. Before they got two feet in the door, Alex stopped. It was like we were in slow motion. His eyes caught mine right away. At first, a spark of joy flashed through them before being buried beneath what seemed to be dread.   The final bell rang out, breaking the trance-like state we were both in. The three moved towards me. I held my breath as Alex glanced at the empty seat next to me. I held my breath as he got closer. Then let it out when he passed by me to sit at the table across the aisle behind me with Sam. The brunet pulled the chair out next to me. She glared at me out of the corner of her eye. 'I just got here. What could I have done to make her mad at me?' Brushing it off, I paid attention to the teacher in the front of the room.   "Okay, class, today we have a new student." 'Oh, please not this' you would think I would have gotten used to being called out, but in reality, it still sucks. "Allison, now we will be sure to make her feel welcome, won't we class?" The teacher asked the class. She was small in size, but you could feel the confidence raiding off of her. "Yes, Miss Winston," The class responded in unison. It was kind of scary. With a nod of her head, she moved around her desk with a stack of papers. "Allison, you actually came at the perfect time. Today we have a pop quiz." Groans from the class filled the room. Not being bothered by the noise Miss, Winston went on. "So I will be able to see where you at." She finished handing me a packet. 'Great a test on my first day. Good thing I'm pretty good at math.'   After all the packets were handed out, Miss Winston sat back at her desk. "Okay, you have the entire class time to finish, starting now." With that, I jumped into the test. Twenty minutes later, I was done. Walking up to her desk, I handed Miss Winston my test. She looked at me with wide eyes. "Finished already?" She asked in a whisper, taking the papers from me. I nodded and made my way back to my seat. Sitting back in my seat, I couldn't help feeling like eyes were watching me. Not being able to help myself, I glanced behind me to find Alex staring at me. His eyes showing want, or is it longing. Longing for what? Me? No way, he could have any girl in this school. 'He probably has,' I thought darkly. Realizing that I caught him, Alex quickly looked to his test. Pulling out my book, I escaped my own world by diving into another.   Just as I had finished my book, the bell rang. Dismissing us from class. Gathering my things, a hand laid on my notebook. Stopping me from retrieving it. Following the arm up to a face, the girl sat next to me, and she did not look happy. "Listen, I don't know what makes you so special, but Alex is a good guy. You can't believe what people tell you. If you ask me, I think it's smart for you to stay away from him, but for whatever reason, he likes you a lot." Okay, I'm confused. Is she trying to keep me away from Alex or push me towards him? "Look, all I'm saying is that if you hurt him any more than you already have, you will have me to deal with." Just by looking at her, I knew that I stood no chance against her. With that, she walked out of the classroom. What in the world just happened? With thoughts running through my mind, I moved down the hall back to my locker. Thinking I had enough time, I ducked into the girls' bathroom. I just needed to clear my head for a minute. Finally, I decided not to think about Alex or his friend until I got through school. Starting up and taking a breath, I exited the bathroom. The halls were empty. Looking at the clock on the wall, my eyes grew big. I was late! How could I be late? I never heard ether bell. Picking up the pass while trying to find my next class. Rounding a corner, I stopped in my tracks. Alex was holding a boy, from my last class, up against the wall by his collar. Quickly moving back behind the corner, I listened in. I know I shouldn't have, but I was curious.   "If you or anyone else in this school talk about her like that again, you will have to deal with me. Is that clear?" Alex said through gritted teeth. Even from down the hall, I could feel the anger come off him.       "What, Alex? Are you afraid that another guy will get into that tight top of her before you?" The boy against the wall responded. He sounded like he was trying to catch his breath, but you could still hear the smile on his lips. All I heard next was a thump on the floor and Alex saying. "Allison is off limits!" With a gasp, I rounded the corner. This time Alex was on top of the boy punching him repeatedly in the face.   "Alex, stop!" I called from where I was, but he didn't. It was like he couldn't hear me. I rushed down the hall to where they were. "Alex, stop!" I repeated the whole way, but it wasn't until I touched his shoulder that he looked at me. "Alex, please stop." His eyes were a magnificent bright blue. After studying me for a moment, his eyes dimmed to a normal blue. I looked at the boy lying underneath Alex. His mouth was bleeding, and a nice bruise was forming on his left cheek. Making eye contact, I motioned for him to leave. Alex's eyes never leaving me. I looked around for somewhere to hide in case someone came out of a class. Finding a door that leads to a stairwell. I grabbed Alex's good hand. I pulled him into the stairs. "Come on. I can look at your hand in here. Once in the stairwell, Alex sat on the first step. Not saying a word, I sat next to him. Taking his bloody hand and placing it on my knee. This got his attention. He almost pulled away before I held him in place. Swinging my bag by my side. I dug into the front pocket and pulled out a small package of tissues. I wetted the tissue using my water bottle. I began to clean his hand. Alex was watching my every move. I was about to grab a band-aid, but there were no cuts on his hand—just a few scrapes.   We sat there next to each other. Both of us lost in our own thoughts. It wasn't long until I broke the silence. "You shouldn't have done that."   Alex was silent, just sitting there rubbing the palms of his hands. What is with him? He sticks up for me when I'm not there. Then when coming face to face with me, he's silent. Well, fine, if that's how he wants to be then, I won't even try. Gathering up my things, I moved to the door. "You didn't hear what he was saying." His voice husky, stopping me in my tracks. "And that gives you the right to go around punching people? I don't need protecting. I think I've been doing a good job of that just fine." I couldn't keep the anger out of my voice.   "So what am I supposed to do? Just sit by and let perves like that make you out to be a w***e? When I know for a fact that you are nothing like the person they were making you out to be." He outburst as he shot to his feet. I was thrown for a moment. Alex was breathing deeply and rapidly with his back toward me. I don't know what possessed me, but I moved toward him. Placing my hand on his shoulder then jerking it away. His body was siring hot. Forcing my hand back onto his shoulder gently. I felt him cool beneath my palm.   "They are just words. I learned a long time ago that there is a lot more in this life that can hurt you." I said softly. He reached up and held my hand like it was his lifeline. The school bell broke our moment, making me jump. "Crap," I missed a whole period on my first day, just great. Pulling my hand away, I grabbed my bag and left without a word.
