Olivia Bennet:-
"Oh my gosh! Mr. Sinclair will be furious with me now and will find another way to humiliate and degrade me in front of others." When the iced coffee spilled on my work suit, I cursed aloud. The meeting is going to begin in eight minutes, and as the assistant to the great and ruthless businessman Joel Sinclair, I can't afford to make a single mistake or he will scream at me like an enraged lion. His very presence is enough to intimidate me. With only his gaze, the man can assassinate someone.
"Olivia, what are you going to do now? Mr. Sinclair is on his way to the meeting room. All of the project's commercial investors are inside." When he saw the large stain on my white silk shirt, my best friend, Harry, inquired. I was terrified and had no idea what to do at this moment.
I was just thinking about my alternatives, of which I have none, when Joel Sinclair walked into the work space corridor, surrounded by his high-security crew, his phone on his ear and one hand resting inside his three-piece designer suit pant pocket. Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked down in reverence as he came along the corridor, not having the guts to lift their heads and look at him.
Because he lacks a heart, he is regarded as a beast in the corporate world. He is vicious and only uses others for his profit in the corporate world; even in his personal life, he is disliked by everyone except his mother Margaret Sinclair, who is a b***h and just wants money and luxury in her life.
"What the hell happened to your shirt, Miss. Bennet? Did you get puked on? You look repulsive." Joel Sinclair, as usual, didn't miss an opportunity to slander me in front of everyone. "Don't you realize you're Joel Sinclair's assistant? You must appear acceptable in front of my investors, not like a piece of garbage."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Sinclair. It was my mistake. I ran into her while drinking my iced tea..." Joel's one glance cut Harry off as he towered over my best friend and me with an icy gaze and clenched his teeth in wrath.
"Did I ask you for any explanation? Besides, who the hell are you to talk to me like that?" Joel asked, and if looks could kill, Harry would have been castrated six feet under the ground by now. " You little piece of crap are no match for me and my standards, so speak to someone who matches your poor standards, like Olivia Bennet." he completed his words while gazing at me this time.
"I...I apologize on my friend's behalf over here, Mr. Sinclair." I apologized to my boss, who rolled his eyes and cut me off before I could continue by slashing his palm in the air.
" Please don't tell me you have speech impediment problems as well, Miss. Bennet. Because if you have, I am afraid I will have to terminate you because I want someone who is confident and competent enough to stand next to me during a business meeting and speak like a professional lady rather than stammering like a fool." He shouted " You're constantly doing something stupid to offend me. And currently, I have no option but to take you inside with me in that conference room, as much as I dislike doing so. Now follow me while remaining silent." He gave his directions and moved ahead of me.
"I hate him." When Joel and his security crew left, Harry said something to me. I merely nodded, not knowing what to say other than admitting my error.
"There's no reason to despise him, Harry. It was my own error that enraged him, and he wasn't incorrect to bring out my lack of professionalism. He just said the truth, because I, too, have doubts about my own talents. He is an excellent leader figure from whom to learn." I followed Joel to the meeting after stating that.
As soon as I walked into the conference room with Joel, all eyes were on him, and I felt terrified and low in front of him. Every businessman and each of their assistants in the room. Every single one of the assistants was well-dressed and professional, yet I appeared destitute and out of place as if I didn't belong there, which was true. I didn't, but I had no option but to work for Joel since I really need to pay off my student debts and my mother's debt in order to go forward in my life.
"Ladies and gentlemen, shall we begin?" Joel inquired after taking a seat in the table's head chair. Everyone took their seats and focused on the projection screen, which was showing the presentation for the most recent project. Joel and his business investor were constructing a retail mall, as well as commercial and residential areas, to resemble a society.
It was one of his biggest projects in history, a project that could earn him billions and billions of dollars in his bank account, but I don't know why I had the feeling after looking at the project that this project would be nothing more than a disaster that would cause him to lose everything he has right now.
"Mr. Joel, what are your thought?" the presenter asked once the presentation was over " Any options you want to share?"
"With the exception of that hospital, I believe everything in this project is fine. I don't believe the hospital will be required since it is pointless when there is already one nearby." Joel declared " Remove the hospital section and proceed. I want the construction to begin as soon as possible."
"I believe the hospital will be required because the hospital you are referring to, Mr. Sinclair, is fifteen kilometers away, and I am sure the community will require a hospital at their discharge when there is an emergency." I expressed my opinions. "And, to be honest, I don..." Joel cut me off because he was annoyed with me.
"Miss. Bennet, no one here asked for your opinion. It'll be a lot better if you keep your head down and don't attempt to be the boss around here. Who are you to share your thoughts?" Joel yelled in front of everyone. " Nobody except an employee. Get out of my sight, but first apologize." I felt tears well up in my eyes as I heard whispers and murmured voices around me.
"What on earth is going on over here?" "What did this good for nothing woman do this time?" asked a brisk female voice, proudly standing there with malicious intent in her eyes for me.
"Mother, not right now!" Joel yelled at her mother, "Wait for me in the office; I'll be there in a few minutes with you once I finish this meeting." He then returned his gaze to me. " What are you looking forward to? An invitation to leave?" he inquired.
"No...no, Sir." I stammered again and went out of the meeting room with moist eyes, but not before being glared at by Mrs. Sinclair, who despises me and my standards with every nerve in her body.
I dashed into the restroom and sobbed uncontrollably when I realized no one was there to hear me. I strolled back to my desk, which was present in Joel's office, after what felt like an hour and began to feel a bit better. Joel was nowhere to be seen until I heard his voice from behind me.
"Can I get my coffee after you've finished crying like a scared little p***y in the bathroom? It was expected to arrive half an hour ago." He practically yelled at me, took a long breath, and said, "Olivia, where's my damn coffee?" Joel snapped, his voice brimming with rage.
When I saw Joel leaning against the office doorway, arms crossed and a harsh expression on his face, I cringed. He emanated authority, which made my nerves quiver. As soon as he saw me, he came up, his piercing eyes fixed on me.
My heart skipped a beat, and my eyes widened in terror. I immediately dropped the files I'd just taken up to study and dashed to the little kitchenette, my hands quivering.
"Sorry, sir," I muttered. "I'll make it right away." Joel rolled his eyes and shook his head, clearly annoyed. I dashed into the kitchen and quickly made him a cup of coffee before returning to the office. I set the cup in front of him and walked to my desk to work when I noticed Joel yelling and spitting out the coffee from his mouth on his desk.
"Do you call this coffee? This was a basic task, and you couldn't even do it? Really? Don't you always screw up the simplest tasks?" He sneered, his voice tinged with cynicism. "I can't believe how difficult it is to make a simple cup of coffee. This tastes terrible. You embarrassed me in front of my business's investor first, and now this? Is this your retaliation for yelling at you earlier in the conference room?"My cheeks flushed with disgrace as I battled to keep my tears at bay.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Sinclair," I said quietly, hardly audible. "I'll make it better the next time." Joel sighed exasperatedly, his annoyance evident.
"You better," he retorted, his tone condescending. "I don't have the time for incompetence." With his remarks, I felt my confidence dwindle as Joel's harsh words from earlier and now replayed in my ears. I resented how he dismissed me and made me doubt my own skills. I returned to the kitchen and brewed another cup of coffee. I returned to the office after pouring the coffee into his unique coffee set, which he had bought from China.
My emotions were clouding my attention as I poured the boiling coffee into his mug with shaky hands. My hold loosened as I turned to deliver it to Joel, and the cup dropped from my grasp. The sound of a thousand bits reverberated throughout the office.
"Oh no!" My voice trembled as I shrieked. "I-I'm very sorry, sir. It had slid. I'll immediately clean this up." As he stared at the smashed cup on the floor, Joel's face went scarlet with rage.
"You can't possibly accomplish anything right, can you?" He spits, his words tinged with disdain. "You're a complete mess."
Joel's harsh remarks destroyed my self-esteem, causing my shoulders to sag. I started gathering the mug's broken pieces, my motions lethargic and despondent.
"I'm really sorry, sir," I said quietly, hardly audible. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to..." Joel cut her off with a dismissive wave of his hand.
"Enough," he shouted, his tone tinged with irritation. "Just clean it up and get back to work. I don't have time for your ineptness."
I stood back up after finishing cleaning up the debris, waiting for more directions. Joel gave me a scrutinizing glance before pointing to another work.
"Now that you've finished that, I need you to file these documents right away. And make sure you don't mess it up this time," he said, his tone still condescending.
I took a deep breath and responded with respect, trying to let go of my rage. "You got it, boss. I vow I'll handle the file with extreme caution." Joel couldn't help but make another request as I began sorting the materials. "Hey, bring that bottle of water over here," he said, his gaze fixed on me. When we heard another voice from the office doorway, I was going to respond.
"Hello, Joel baby, are we in for yet another f**k?" With a luring grin, the woman standing at the doorway questioned.
"I will take my leave." I knew what is about to happen over here in this office like every other day so I was well aware of the drill and left with a strange unknown feeling inside of my heart.
"Wait! Did I ask you to leave?" Joel stopped me from leaving and demanded in a stern tone " I want you to stay over here and watch what I am about to do."
" Wha...What do you mean by that? What do you want me to watch?" I asked with a shocked gaze fixed on him. Please don't tell me that he wants me to watch as he f***s this blonde bimbo on his desk because I don't think I can see that without puking my guts out right here on this white porcelain floor.
