The cave flickered with the warm light of fire but Luna’s thoughts were anything but warm. She say at the entrance of the cave, knees pulled to her chest as she stared out into the dark and spooky forest. The events of the past few days had left her restless. Her muscles still ached from the fight she had with the rogue wolves and the searing pain from the mark on her hand lingered like a curse.
Eira moved silently around the fire, grinding herbs with a tone pestle. The rogue healer’s silver streaked hair shunned in the firelight and her expressions were distant as though she carried secrets to heavy to share.
“You are gloomy again” she said without looking up. “I’m thinking” Luna replied. Eira’s lips curved into a faint smile. “Gloomy sounds more accurate”. Luna’s shot had a glare. “Magnus is out there, ruling with lies and fear and I’m stuck here in a cave”. She clenched her fists. “I need to do something “.
Eira set down the pestle and met Luna’s gaze. “You are not ready”.
“I survived those wolves” Luna argued “I can handle Magnus”. Eira expression hardened. “Barely survived” she corrected. “And those were just wild wolves. Magnus is far more dangerous and if you rush in unprepared, you’ll die “ her voice softened. “If you truly want revenge then you need something far more than anger. You need control”.
Luna swallowed hard, hating the truth in Eira’s words. Her rage had kept her alive but it wouldn’t be enough to take down Magnus.
“Then teach me” Luna said, her voice firm. “Make me stronger so that I can face him and it would be and even fight”.
Eira’s gaze flickered with something unreadable— regret perhaps but she nodded. “Be careful what you wish for”. Eiraled Luna into the deep forest at dawn. The air was crisp and frost clung to the leaves like shimmering crystals. The towering pines cast long shadows over the forest floorcreating a maze of light and dark.
They wales in silence until they reached a wild clearing surrounded by ancient trees. The wind rustled through the branches, carrying the faint smell of wildflowers.
“Stand there.” Eira instructed, pointing to the center of the clearing
Lina obeyed, her breathe visible in the chilling air
“Close your eyes” Eira said. Lina hesitated. “Why?”.
Eira’s gaze was sharp. “Do you want to learn or not?”. Grinning her teeth, Luna shut her eyes. The sounds of the forest faded, replaced by the steady rhythm of her breathing. “Feel the earth beneath your feet” Eira’s voice was low and steady. “Feel the need on your skin”. The heartbeat of the forest”.
Luna started to focus with her senses sharpening. She felt the cold ground beneath her boots, the subtle vibrations of life all around her—the rustle leaves , the distance chirps of birds.
“Good” Eira said “Now find your center”. That place within where your power sleeps”. Luna brows furrowed. Her thoughts were a chaotic swirl of pain, anger and memories. Magnus cruel smile, Calder’s silence. The weight of betrayal pressed down her chest.
Her breath grew heavy. “I can’t—Quiet your mind” Eira snapped. “Your power feeds on your emotions but if you let them control you, you’ll burn yourself to ashes.”
Luna clenched her fist with frustration boiling inside her. “How much am I supposed to do that when everything inside me is screaming “.
Eira’s expression softened “ you are not here to forget your pain, you’re here to use it”. Luna took a shaky breath pushing past the chaos.
Beneath the storms of emotions was a flicker of something fierce and unyielding. The mark on her hand tingled.
“There” Eira whispered “hold on to it”. The flicker grew stronger and larger into a steady flame. Heat immediately flowed through Luna’s veins and her body hummed with energy. Her eyes snapped open, glowing with emerald light.
Eira’s lips curved into a satisfied smile. “Not bad for a beginner”. As they walked back to the cave, Eira grew uncharacteristically silent. Her brows furrowed and her gaze flickered with unease.
“What is it” Luna asked sensing the shift in Eira’s mood. “There is something I haven’t told you” Eira admitted. “Your bloodline— its not just ancient, it’s dangerous”
Luna frowned. “What do you mean?”. Eira hesitated, her voice low. “Your ancestors commanded rogue wolves , bending them to their will. That kind of power doesn’t come without consequences”.
“Luna’s stomach twirled. “Are you saying that I’m destined to be like them?”
Eira’s eyes darkened . “That depends on you. Power is a tool and if you let vengeance overshadow you, it’ll twist you into something unrecognizable”.
Luna’s voice wavered. “Magnus already took everything from me. I can’t just let him win”
“Revenge is a fire” Eira said. “It will either make you or it will break you”
Luna’s voice hardened. “Then it’ll surely make me and turn me into something much more better”.
Eira’s expression flickered, guilt flashing across her face. “You knew about my bloodline before I did. Didn’t you?” Luna asked with suspicion creeping in her voice. Eira didn’t respond immediately.
The silence was damming. “You were sort of the Crescent Moon park, Luna accused. “Weren’t you?” Eira’s jaw tightened “I was once bound to that place but I left long before Magnus rise”. “Why?” Luna asked . Eira’s gaze was cold. “Some secrets are better left buried”.
That night as Luna laid by the fire, the mark on her hand flared up again. Her body tensed and heat circulating round her body through her veins like a wildfire. The cave walls blurred and a strange dizziness swept over her.
“Eira—“ she gasped but the world dissolved before she could say another word.
Lina stood in a waste land under a blood red sky. The air was thick with ash and the ground cracked beneath her feet. Wolves with glowing sliver eyes emerged from the shadows, circling her with low growls.
A voice echoed through the wasteland, deep and demanding. “Control them or they will destroy you” the voice was familiar—Eira’s, but distant and warped. The wolves closed in, teeth grinning. Luna’s heart raced but the mark on her hand blazed with light.
“Enough” she roared with her voice rippling through the air.The wolves froze, their eyes fixed on her. A shiver ram down her spine as she realized that they were waiting for her command.
In the distance, Magnus emerged from the shadows with dark magic cracking in his hands. “You are nothing without me” he sneered. “You think you can control them ? You are like a puppet. Just like your ancestors l”. Luna’s jaw clenched. “I’m not your puppet”
The darkness surged towards her but she stood firm, the wolves snarling at her side. The mark on her hand flared brighter and the world exploded into light.
Lina gasped, sitting upright. Her body was drenched in sweat and her heart raced wildly.
Eirs knelt beside her, eyes wild with concern. “What did you see?”. “Wolves, Magnus and—“ Luna’s voice trembled. “Power”.
Eira’s face darkened. “The awakening has begun”
Luna clenched her fist “then I’ll be ready.”
