The Crescent Moon pack compound looked ahead, sprawling beneath the faint light of dawn. It high stone walls were harsh reminder of Magnus’s reign. Now fortified with iron gates and guard towers at every corner. Luna stood in the shadows near a line of ancient trees . Her breathe steady despite the chill in the air.
She had crossed the border undetected the previous night, slipping through the rough terrain of the Norther ridge. Now hidden among the trees . She watched the heart of the pack come to life. Wolves in human form moved in precision. Their face hardened with suspicion.
Patrols roamed the perimeter. Their eyes sharpened and unyielding. Magnus paranoia was noticeable, infecting the entire pack like a disease.
Luna’s fingers brushed the tip of her dagger as she scanned the scene. The air was thick with tension and unease prickled at the edges of her senses.
The pack had changed since she last walked it grounds. What had once been a place of unity strength was now a fortress built in fear. The laughter and warmth that had once filled these streets were gone, replaced by the cold efficiency of a militarized pack.
Luna clenched her jaw. Magnus had twisted everything she had once loved about the place but she would tear it all down. Stone by stone.
Lina moved silently through the shadows , her sharp eyes cataloging every change. Guard towers now flanked the main pathways and the market square was deserted except for a few wary wolves who moved quickly, avoiding eye contact. Even the scent of the place had changed—stale and oppressive, lacking the vibrant energy it once held.
A group of guards passed by, their voices low but tensed. “Another patrol at dusk?” One of them muttered. “We’re already stretched thin”
“Alpha’s orders” the other replied. “No one questions him”
Luna’s lips curled in a bitter smile. Fear was a powerful weapon but it was also a fragile one .
She pressed herself against a wall as two or more guards approached. Their footsteps echoed in the stillness and Luna’s pulse quickened. She waited until they passed before slipping into an alley way that led towards the central square.
The sounds of distant voice grew louder and Luna’s heart raced . She crept closer, her senses on high alert.
The central square was filled with wolves, their faces grim and wary. Torches blazed along the edges , casting flickering shadows across the crowd. At the center, stood a raised platform where Magnus addressed the pack with a voice that boomed through the space.
“We have faced threats from within and without “ Magnus declared, his tone demanding. “But the Crescent Moon pack stands strong because we are united. No rogue, no outsider can tear us apart”.
A murmur of agreement rippled through the crowd, though Luna noted the unease in their expressions. Magnus reign was built on fear and cracks were beginning to show.
Her gaze shifted and her breath caught when she spotted Ronan standing near the platform. His expression were smug, his posture exuding confidence. The sight of him stoked the fire in Luna’s chest. He had been Magnus accomplices in her betrayal and she would never forget.
Then her eyes found Calder.
He stood as Magnus right, his face unreadable. The years had hardened him, his stormy blue eyes shadowed by something darker. He looked every inch in the alpha’s heir— confident, powerful and distant.
Luna’s heart twisted but she forced the emotions down. Calder had made his choice long ago when he let Magnus condemn her . She owed him nothing.
As Magnus continued his speech, Luna’s instincts prickled. The air felt charged, heavy with anticipation. The sudden snap of branches shattered the stillness.
Chaos erupted as rogue wolves burst from the shadows , their snarl ripping through the gathering. The pack scattered, shifting into their wolf forms as Magnus roared commands.
“Defend the Pack” he bellowed.
Luna pulse quickened, she pressed herself against the wall. Her mind racing. This wasn’t part of the plan. She had come to gather information not to fight a battle.
A blur of dark fur lunged at her from the side. Luna ducked, her dagger flashing as she slashed across the rogue’s flank. The wolf yelped and stumbled but more were closing in.
Pack wolves clashed with the rogues, teeth bared and eyes gleaming. The air was thick with the scent of blood and the sound of snarls and yells.
Luna’s gaze darted across the chaos, searching for Eira. Panic gripped her when she spotted the healer getting surrounded by two snarling wolves. Eira’s movements were swift but she was outnumbered.
Damn it.
Luna sprinted towards her, adrenaline surging through her veins. She tackled one of the wolves , her blades sinking into its side. Hot blood sprayed across her hand , but she didn’t falter.
“Eira—“ she shouted
The older woman twisted her eyes wide with surprise. “Luna, no—“. Before Eira could finish, the second wolf lunged at Luna . She rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding its snapping jaws . Her heart thundered in her chest as she fought to regain her footing .
The mark on her hand burned and a surge of energy coursed through her body. Heat flooded through her veins and the world seemed slow. The rogue wolf movement became slow and Luna saw her opening.
With a roar, she drove her dagger into its chest. The wolf collapsed with a final , pitiful whimper.
The battlefield blurred around her as the adrenaline faded . Eira grabbed her arm, her voice urgent “we need to go now”
But it was too late
“Luna?”
The voice was low with disbelief
She froze, her blood turning to ice . Slowly, she turned to face the one person she didn’t want to see .
Calder.
His stormy blue eyes were high in shock, his chest heavy from the fight. Blood stained his shirt but he didn’t seem to notice.
“Luna” he said again, this time with certainty. Her heart pounded. But she forced herself to stay calm . “You are mistaken” she said coldly.
Calder’s eyes narrowed “Don’t lie to me”.
She took a step back, her muscle coiled to run. “I don’t know you” but Calder was faster. He closed the distance between them, his hands gripping her arm. “What the hell are you doing here?”.
Luna’s jaw clenched. “Let me go”
“Not until you tell me why you are here”. Calder demanded. His voice low and fierce.
Eira’s voice cut through the tension. “We need to move”
Luna hesitated, her gaze locked with Calder’s . For a moment, everything else faded—the battle, the blood, the chaos . There was only the weight of their past and the unspoken words between them .
Then reality clashed back in . Luna wrenched her arm free, her voice cold . “Stay out of my way, Calder”
Before he could respond, she turned and bolted into the shadows with Eira at her side.
As they disappeared into the night , Calder’s voice echoed behind them.
“I’ll find you”.
