Matt "Asshole" Sanders
"Klaus’ case has been reassigned, Gilbert. You’re no longer in charge…”, Chief Rigsby informed me as he leaned against the back of his chair to observe my reaction.
“What do you mean reassigned? I’ve been working on it for an entire year… I’m this close from nailing Klaus! You can’t just take it all from me now…”, I objected firmly.
“It’s not my call to make, Adrianne. The orders came from my superiors, there’s nothing I can do…”, Chief Rigsby explained softly. He cared about me, no matter how hard he tried to keep his distance, I could see right through him.
“Your superiors? Who’s calling the shots now? Who’s in charge?”, I asked again.
“The FBI took over the case… I’m expecting the boy who’ll run this investigation from now on to show up at any second now… He won’t be long! I’ll need all the information you were able to gather throughout this whole year, Adrianne.”, Chief replied soothingly.
“You’re expecting a BOY? How old is he anyway? Does he know what he’s getting himself into?”, I inquired.
“He’s older than you. Late twenties, early thirties… I don’t know for sure his exact age. He is good at what he does, if not the best… Maybe this is for the best.”, Chief replied reassuringly.
“Can I meet him at least?”, I requested.
“Will you behave?”, he asked, resting his arms on the table to glare at me.
“What’s that supposed to mean? I’ll behave, you don’t have to worry.”, I tried to sound outraged at his insinuation but I knew exactly why he was asking that.
“Guess we’ll see about that in a few seconds, ‘cause here he comes…”, he said staring outside his office.
A tall and well-developed young man was walking towards the office, real short hair and no beard covering that perfect bone structure. He is hot! What the f**k am I thinking? He is not hot! He is stealing your case, the one you worked so hard for over a year. He is not hot! I mentally slapped myself for those thoughts. He looked like the typical FBI agent dressed in a black suit, a black tie around his neck and a pair of Aviators finishing the outfit.
“Good morning, Chief Rigsby! Good morning, miss…”, He shook the Chief’s hand and stretched out his right hand for me to shake waiting for me to finish his sentence.
“Gilbert, Adrianne Gilbert. And you are?”, I didn’t take his hand shake but I noticed a tattoo filling the back of his hand.
“Sanders, Matthew Sanders.”, he replied politely and shoved his stretched out hand in his pocket.
“Nice tattoo you have there, Sanders! Is it okay for you to have a tattoo somewhere as noticeable as your hand? I’d thought your superiors wouldn’t approve that.”, I tried to make a polite conversation, but my voice was filled with resentment.
“What do you have for me, Chief?”, he ignored me.
“You should be asking that to agent Gilbert. She’s been leading the investigation since her father’s disappearance. Now that you two know each other you can discuss things together, she’ll give you all you need to proceed, every piece of information she has gathered will be yours. You two can leave now… I have some other businesses to take care of.”, he dismissed us.
I led the way out of the Chief’s office with Sanders following me close by. I took my seat behind my desk and waited for him to do the same but he stood in front of me waiting for me to give him my work.
“Can we please talk first?”, I asked politely.
“Sure, Gilbert! What do you want to talk about? The weather?”, he asked with a smirk, taking a seat in front of me.
“I want to be a part of the investigation! This is personal for me now…”, I said.
“I couldn’t care less about what you want. There’s a reason why this investigation changed hands… This matter belongs to the FBI now and as far as I know you’re not an FBI agent. You’re out, just deal with it. Maybe your feelings were what got this whole operation messed up…”, he replied coldly.
“I don’t mix things… If something, my feelings were what got me this far, pushing me to go until the edge to catch this motherfucker. You have no right to make insinuations, you do not know me. If you stayed where you belong I’d catch Klaus within a year. I’m good at what I do, I don’t need your acquiescence.”, I spat bitterly.
“Why haven’t you caught him yet? You don’t have the clearance or the skills to do what’s necessary to get him good. Maybe you’re good… but not good enough! Now… May I have his file?”, he stretched his hand out to me.
“Fine!”, I bite my tongue so I wouldn’t say something the Chief would certainly disapprove. I gathered Klaus’ file and handed it to him, the file had some blanks I had left on purpose because I didn’t fully trust in my colleagues, some of them could be corrupt. Klaus could bribe or coerce anyone he pleased, so I kept all the juicy details out of the officcial file
“Is everything in here?”, he asked.
“Yeah, everything is there.”, I lied.
“Good! I’ll see you when I turn Klaus in.”, he said cockily and left.
I’m not letting this go… I’ll keep with the investigation on my own! Klaus has a shipment coming tonight… and it seems like it is important cargo, maybe he’ll show up to supervise. I’ll be down at the dock at sunset, I don’t wanna miss it for being late… I wonder at what time the shipment will arrive.
Chief Rigsby kept me busy all day, I was on street patrol. It was a pretty quiet day… A domestic violence incident, where the victim refused to press charges, a drug dealer caught in action but nothing major. I had been working on Klaus for so long that everything else seemed minor to me. What’s a drug dealer or an assaulter compared to the Mob Lord that orders homicides, torture sessions, traffics and exploits women, runs the drug supply network?
“See you tomorrow, Chief!”, I said poking my head inside his office.
“Hey, Gilbert!”, he called out for me when I turned my back to leave.
“Yeah?”, I replied.
“Did you give agent Sanders all the information? You’re not doing anything stupid, are you?”, he asked.
“Yeah, I gave him all I had on Klaus… Wasn’t I supposed to? What could I possibly do, Chief? Like you said, this is probably for the best… I was probably over my head in this case.”, I tried to sell my lies.
“I don’t know… Don’t get me wrong but it just seems to me that you’re taking this too well. I wasn’t expecting you to fold your arms so easily…”, he said suspiciously.
“You told me yourself that there was nothing you could do. If you can’t, how can I? I think that agent will do well, at least he is confident enough… I guess we’ll see how that goes.”, I lied again.
“Okay… See you tomorrow, kid!”
I went home for a quick shower and change clothes. I prepared a sandwich to eat on my way to the dock, I had decided to go on foot not to draw any attention on me.
The sun was already gone when I reached the dock, I found myself the perfect spot from where I could watch the entire dock. I had my camera with me to gather the evidences if necessary.
“What are you doing here?”, the familiar voice startled me.
“f**k! You scared the hell out of me… I was just out for a walk.”, Sanders was standing beside me with a sleeveless MEGADEATH t-shirt showing his colorful strong arms.
“Out for a walk? Like I buy that s**t… I’m not stupid, Gilbert. What the f**k are you doing here, woman? You’re gonna ruin everything if you don’t stop nosing around.”, he hissed furiously as he grabbed my arm and started to drag me out of the dock.
“Hey, Shadz! What do you have there? New friend?”, I recognized that man, he was one of Klaus’ men. Who the f**k is Shadz? Is he talking to Sanders?
“She’s hardly my friend, Donovan. She’s a cop. She was snooping around…”, Sanders replied coldly.
What the f**k is he doing?
