Camille Blackwell

“You’re home late.”
I blinked, my mouth falling open at his audacity. I just caught him making out with his ex on the couch and all he had to say to that was that I was home late? Coming from him who barely came home during the night? “I… I…” I stuttered. I had a lot to say to him, but I wasn’t used to fighting with him. I didn’t know how to bring the words out. Instead, I let my gaze travel to the woman beside him. “Who is she?”
His eyes flicked to her with disinterest. “This is Victoria.”
Victoria took that as her sign to place her hand on his shoulder. She smiled at me haughtily. “Nice to meet you, Camille.”
I returned my gaze to Dominic. “What is she doing here?”
He raised an eyebrow. “Do I need permission before I bring a visitor into my house?”
“Your visitor?” I echoed with a bitter laugh. “You’re making out on the couch!” The words slipped out before I could stop them.
Dominic stood then, crossing his arms against his chest. “And what does that have to do with you, Camille?” His words came out as a challenge, as if he was daring me to say something back. Did he do it on purpose knowing I’d catch him when I came back?
“You’re kissing another woman in our matrimonial home!”
“It’s still my house.” He pointed out. “Besides, we did agree to see other people when we got married. Why are you trying to make a big deal out of it?”
“I…” I felt sick to my stomach. He wasn’t wrong but we said that four years ago! I hadn’t slept with anyone else and I didn’t think he had slept with anyone apart from me either. Why was he doing this now? “B-but—“
“But nothing.” He interrupted. “I’m not yours to hoard. Know your place.”
It felt like I had been physically slapped. I took a shaky step back, willing myself not to cry.
Victoria stood then, keeping her eyes on me as she wrapped her hands around his shoulders from behind. She placed a kiss on his neck that he didn’t even react to but it caused a wound on my heart nonetheless.
I wondered if the staff had seen the two of them kissing. I wondered if they thought I was as pathetic as I felt at the moment.
“Speaking of being yours,” he continued when I didn’t say anything else. “It’s high time this came to an end. There’s a file in the drawer. Sign your name on it and I’ll have it sent to the court.”
My mouth felt dry. I took another step back. “No.”
Dominic’s eyes flashed. “Yes. Victoria is currently carrying my child and I’d like to make space for my family. Sign the divorce papers and start packing your things.”
It felt like someone reached into my heart, took hold of it, and squeezed it tightly. My eyes were blurry and I had to blink repeatedly to keep the tears at bay. Wasn’t he supposed to consult me first before serving divorce papers?
“Please, Dominic,” I begged, not caring that Victoria was there to watch. “Don’t do this. Not like this.”
“Don’t make this harder than it needs to be, Camille. I never loved you anyway.”
Did he rehearse his words? Did he know every word he spoke to me would beat me down? I placed a hand on my chest because of how badly it was hurting. I couldn’t control my tears anymore and they burst like a dam. It was supposed to be the best day of my life. How did I end up losing my husband?
I thought about my family. My mother would be so disappointed. My father would shake his head if he saw me. He’d worked so hard to secure my marriage to the Blackwells. If I ruined it, I might as well lose his support. My sister would laugh at me for not being able to keep my marriage.
Aside from the fact that I was in love with him, I couldn’t afford to lose him. Especially not to his ex. She didn’t care about him. Not as much as I did anyway.
“Whatever I did, Dom, I’m sorry.” I apologized. I didn’t know what went wrong but surely, we could fix things if I apologized, right? “Let’s sleep on it and talk tomorrow. It’s too late to make such big decisions.”
Victoria laughed. “Girl, this is pathetic. If the man doesn’t want you, just pack your bags and get out. All this crying isn’t going to change anything.” She spat at me, then she looked at Dominic. “You were right, Dom. She likes to play the sympathy card.”
Dominic placed his hands in his pockets, looking at me as if he were bored with my performance. “I’m not in the mood for this. I don’t want to take you to court. I’m sure both families would love to avoid that, so if you want your family’s reputation to remain stainless, quietly sign the divorce papers. We’re done.”
“No!” I yelled. “We can’t be! I’m carrying your child.”
“What?”
“I’m pregnant, Dominic. I found out this morning.”
Dominic rolled his eyes. “Don’t be silly, Camille. You’re twenty-six. Too old to be making s**t up.”
“I’m not,” I choked out. “I’m not making it up. The tests are upstairs in our bedroom. If you don’t believe me, you can check.”
“Upstairs? You mean the test strips Victoria used?”
