Camille Blackwell

Victoria giggled like Dominic had said something funny. “Maybe the staff tipped her about the test strips so she hurriedly claimed them to trap you.”
My mouth fell open. How could one lie so blatantly? They were clearly my test strips. Had she seen them upstairs which was why she told him she was carrying his baby? How long had she been around? What was happening? “They’re mine!” I argued but even I knew I sounded crazy.
Dominic had already believed Victoria so nothing I’d say was going to make sense to him.
“We can go to a hospital now and check, Dom.”
Dominic rolled his eyes. “I’m not taking you out of this house to create a scene, Camille.” He looked back at Victoria and his tone softened when he spoke. “Go wait upstairs for me, baby. Let me talk to Camille.”
I felt my chest tighten. Dominic had never called me baby and we’d been married for four whole years.
Victoria kissed him on the cheek before she strutted upstairs. When she was gone, Dominic turned back to me. The anger in his eyes made me stumble back and I leaned against the wall for support.
“I’ve had enough of you, Camille.” He spat out. “You know this won’t end well for your family if I drag you to court.”
“I—“
“You know I’ve always loved Victoria but the moment my family needed help, you convinced your parents to let you marry me. You took advantage of my situation and you know it.”
“I just—“ I didn’t know what to say that would get through to him. Dominic and I had gotten married because his family needed urgent cash and mine had a lot to give. My family also needed the prestige Dominic’s family had so they didn’t hesitate to marry me off to him. I was excited because I’d always had a crush on Dominic. I never would have thought he would resent me for that. “You agreed to it too!”
“Because I had no choice!” He hissed. He was looking at me like I was the cause of all his problems, like I was the one who convinced his parents to make him marry me. He shook his head as if he couldn’t be bothered about the conversation anymore. “You got what you wanted. You married me, but I can’t stand you anymore so we should part ways peacefully.”
“Part ways peacefully?” I gritted out, walking closer to him. What could be peaceful about this separation? He already had a new woman in our room. A woman who was claiming my test strips as hers. Was that his definition of peaceful? “I already told you I’m pregnant!”
Dominic’s face twisted in something that resembled disgust. “Pregnant?” He echoed in disbelief. “You’re still on that. You managed to trap me once with your family’s money. Now you want to make up a fake baby?”
My face fell. Why would he think I was lying about something that serious? “I’m not making it up! Please, Dominic, just hear me out.”
“No!” He hissed. “I don’t want to hear whatever you have to say anymore. You’re too manipulative. Just pack your bags and get out of my house.”
“Dom—“ I tried to reach out to him but he evaded my hold.
“If you don’t leave, I will, but you better be gone by the time I’m back tomorrow.”
Without waiting to hear anything else from me, he walked upstairs and came back down in a few seconds with Victoria in tow. She smiled at me as they walked out of the house.
I stayed rooted in place until I heard the engine of his car starting. As they drove out of the driveway, I crumpled to the floor and let myself fall apart.
I didn’t know how long I stayed there but by the time I wiped my tears and stood up, my legs were numb. I looked around the living room. Our living room. The pillow Victoria had been leaning against was crooked. I found myself straightening it, then paused.
What the hell was I doing?
The man just said he didn’t want me in his house and I was arranging it for him?
I left the crooked pillow and walked upstairs. I went straight to the bathroom and truly, the test strips had been cleaned out.
My lips quivered at the sight.
Dominic had made his stance pretty clear. He wanted Victoria and he wanted me out. No matter how badly I wanted our marriage to work, I still had to preserve the little bit of dignity I had left.
I brought out a suitcase and started packing. I packed only the stuff I needed. I didn’t carry the dresses he bought for me whenever I was needed on his arm. I left the jewelry he bought me because “a Blackwell wife deserved the best”. I took everything I owned before I became his wife, which wasn’t much because I donated most of my clothes at the end of every year.
When I was done, I sat on the edge of the bed for a moment. Was this the end?
The sheets smelled like his cologne and another foreign scent that was likely Victoria’s. I stood up immediately. Did they have s*x on the bed?
I looked through the drawers, found the papers, and stared at them, but I couldn’t bring myself to sign them just yet.
So I dropped them on the bed and dragged my suitcase downstairs. I called a cab instead of asking for the driver because I didn’t need any favors from a Blackwell staff member. They were usually hard to miss, even during the night. It was obvious they made themselves invisible the moment Dominic and Victoria walked in.
I didn’t know where they were but I bet they would discuss it the next day. Poor Mrs. Blackwell who couldn’t keep her husband.
I gave the cab driver the address to my parents’ house and got in the backseat. I pressed my hand flat against my stomach. I still had to go to the hospital to confirm, but with the divorce and my pregnancy, I was sure my life had changed forever.
