Aging in a timeless world. chapter one
Tina adjusted her collar in the mirror for the third time that morning. The line was still there, faint but unmistakable—a soft crease just beneath her jawline. A wrinkle. She leaned closer, willing it to be a trick of the light, a shadow cast by her bedroom's narrow window. But no amount of squinting or adjusting the angle changed the reality staring back at her. She was aging. The realization settled over her like an iron cloak. In a society where everyone stopped aging at twenty-five, where birthdays were celebrated once and then never again, a wrinkle was more than a blemish. It was a revelation, a betrayal of the body that could ruin lives. And it was happening to her. "Tina! You're going to be late again!" The voice of her roommate, Mina, cut through the haze of her thoughts. Mina, with her perpetually flawless complexion and the carefree attitude of someone who never worried about mirrors. Tina hurriedly wrapped a scarf around her neck, the fabric soft but suffocating. "Coming!" She grabbed her bag and slipped out of her room, careful to avoid Mina's scrutinizing gaze. The apartment was small, minimalist, like most dwellings in the city. There was no need for extravagance when time itself was frozen. People didn’t accumulate belongings; they didn’t age, so why should their surroundings? "You okay?" Mina asked, glancing up from her tablet as Tina darted toward the door. "Yeah, fine,"Tina replied, her voice too quick, too sharp. "Just running late." The streets outside were unnaturally clean, lined with glowing advertisements featuring ageless faces and perfect smiles. A hologram of the latest skin serum played on a loop above the transit hub: "Maintain your perfection. Because perfection is forever." Tina tightened her scarf and kept her head down as she boarded the tram. The other passengers were beautiful, eerily so, their skin glowing with the ethereal quality of immortality. No one looked at her—not yet. She wondered how long that would last. Her stop came too soon. The doors slid open with a soft chime, and Tina stepped onto the polished platform of the research facility. The building loomed ahead, a monolith of glass and steel, reflecting the unchanging blue sky. Inside, her job awaited: analyzing the very technology that kept everyone—until now—frozen in time. As she walked toward the entrance, she felt the weight of the wrinkle hidden beneath her scarf. Was it the beginning of something greater? A sign that her body was rejecting the process? Or was it a mistake—a fluke that would fade by tomorrow? She didn't know, but one thing was certain. If anyone found out, her life as she knew it would be over.
