‘I’ll go.’ ‘What? You?’ ‘I lived in Tokyo fer a long time, and know it well. I’ll go.’ ‘But who’ll cook if yer not here?’ ‘I’ll get me sister ter stand in fer me. She comes ter help out sometimes anyways.’ For the first time in ages, I forced myself to think hard. Yes, I’d get my little sister to stand in for me so that I could take the sixth graders to Tokyo. We would probably go by night train, arriving in Tokyo in the morning. If I took the night train back again, I would have some time to myself during the day. I would take all the rice and wild vegetables I could conceal on my person. That way, I would at least be able to leave some food for the Mistress, even if I wasn’t able to meet her.
