SLIPPERS
CHAPTER 1
Greetings to you, and to all who can relate to the story of a storm in a frail woman's life. A storm that seems endless and aimless because it is only permitted by time for her to experience, to endure, but not to dwell in perpetually. Indeed, this woman cannot predict her future due to the darkness of the clouds heavily shrouding her weak persona. How will she face this? How will she accept this now that she is weak, afraid, and lacks intelligence, knowledge, and above all, self-confidence?
Furthermore, many people say she is unattractive. She can hardly be called attractive because of her pimple marks. She was only left and turned away by the people she loved and considered as family and loved ones three or five times. Yet, this frail woman never harbored any resentment. Instead, with every fall, she never tires of asking for forgiveness and strength from the one who owns her life.
Countless are the hardships, sufferings, and bitterness she has experienced since she became aware. Burdens accompany her shoulders as if they are robbing her of her youth. Whenever she sees other children with new clothes, she is very happy because she knows their hand-me-downs will eventually come to her. And she will treat these as new clothes and blessings. What others have outgrown, she sees as new and priceless.
Believe it or not, this frail woman lived through a time of calamity. But in stolen moments, she manages to find joy alone, eating ripe mangoes from a tree laden with fruit. Yet, she was the only one who noticed this in the midst of a remote place. And looking up at the blue sky was all this frail woman could do. As she continues to pick while eating the ripe mangoes. Dividing the found fruit into two, one was a present for her beloved mother and siblings. The second was to be sold to acquaintances so they could buy rice and viands, as well as kerosene for their lamp.
After enjoying her stolen moments in that place, she was ready to face a new tomorrow. Although the surroundings were very dark, each tear that fell helped her strive to see the new morning. For her, every morning brings hope. Although she doesn't fully understand it, in her heart there's a hope that's already formed before others can find it, uniquely she is the key to unlocking it. Yet, every door seems closed when she is seen.
One day, she saw that her neighbor's door was open. Overjoyed, she watched TV there and lost track of time. It was already night, and she hadn't brought any food home. Although weak, all she could do was to take each hit from her beloved mother's cane. But she hardly minded it because of the image that wouldn't leave her mind. The various colors of slippers from the house she had come from.
After wiping her tears, she went back there and happily observed the matching footwear. She realized that her youngest sibling had a broken slipper. So, she needed a nail just to have something to use. Without a second thought, she took it, with the sole intention of letting her youngest sibling try it on and then return it afterward. She greatly pleased her youngest sibling, who wished if possible to wear it. However, she said no because they needed to return it, knowing it was wrong to take what wasn't theirs.
