CHAPTER 1: THE NIGHT HE APPEARED
The rain had been falling for hours as Maya Rose hurried along the dark forest road, clutching her coat tightly around her body while the cold wind swept through the trees. She had promised herself that she would never take this path again, but tonight, she had no choice. The shortcut through Blackwood Forest was the only way home. The forest was strangely quiet. No birds. No insects. Not even the usual sound of leaves moving in the wind. Maya slowed her steps, feeling an uneasy sensation crawl down her spine. Something was wrong. Then she heard it. A low growl. She froze. Her heart began pounding as she slowly turned toward the trees. Nothing. Only darkness. She took another step. Crack. A branch snapped behind her. Maya spun around. A pair of glowing golden eyes stared at her from between the trees. She couldn't breathe. A huge black wolf slowly stepped into the moonlight. Its fur was soaked from the rain, and its golden eyes remained fixed on her. Maya stumbled backward. Maya: Please... don't hurt me. The wolf moved closer, its massive paws pressing against the wet ground. But instead of attacking, it stopped directly in front of her. For a moment, they simply stared at each other. Then something strange happened. The wolf's eyes softened. Maya felt an inexplicable warmth in her chest, as if she had seen those eyes somewhere before. Maya: Do I... know you? The wolf suddenly turned toward the deeper part of the forest. Then it looked back at her. It was almost as if it wanted her to follow. Maya shook her head and took a step backward. Maya: No. I'm not following a wolf into the forest. The wolf growled softly. A distant howl echoed through the trees. The wolf immediately became tense. Maya noticed something she hadn't seen before. There was a deep wound on its side. Blood mixed with the rainwater dripping from its dark fur. Maya's fear slowly disappeared. Maya: Oh my God... you're hurt. Without thinking, she stepped closer. Maya: It's okay. I'm not going to hurt you. She slowly removed the scarf around her neck and reached toward the wounded wolf. But before she could touch it, the wolf suddenly turned and disappeared into the darkness. Maya: Wait! Maya ran after it. She pushed through the wet branches, following the faint sound of footsteps until she reached a small clearing. The wolf was gone. Instead, someone was standing beneath an old oak tree. A man. He was tall and broad-shouldered, with dark hair soaked by the rain. His clothes were torn, and one hand was pressed against his wounded side. Maya stopped. Her breathing became shallow. The stranger slowly lifted his head. Their eyes met. Golden eyes. The exact same golden eyes as the wolf. Maya's face went pale. Maya: Who... are you? The stranger remained silent. His eyes studied her carefully, almost as if he already knew who she was. Finally, he spoke. Mysterious Man: You shouldn't have come here. Maya took a cautious step backward. Maya: Why? The man's expression suddenly changed. Fear appeared in his eyes. He looked past Maya toward the dark forest. Mysterious Man: Because now... He paused. Another howl echoed somewhere in the distance. Mysterious Man: They know you're here. Maya slowly turned around. The forest behind her was completely dark. She turned back. The mysterious man was gone. Only a trail of bloodied footprints remained in the mud. Maya stood frozen in the rain. Then she heard something moving behind the trees. Heavy footsteps. Getting closer. And for the first time, Maya realized that the wolf she had met tonight might not have been the creature she needed to fear.
