A warm breath blew on his forehead his blonde hair moving lightly against his skin as his eyes were closed.
“She needs to learn to sleep better, breathing on my face like that” thought Samuel as he turned his head and still some light breathing blew on his face, immediately terror struck his heart as he opened his eyes and before him his wife had her eyes closed asleep.
“if she is here then who just now was…” His mind spun inside as he knew the door is closed and Charlie could not have entered and Mariah is too small to come here let alone crawl here and open the door to arrive next to him, feeling a dark ominous presence behind him his stomach churned as if he got food poising, he remembered this feeling it was when he was at the city investigating a serial killer that threatened to kill him and Linda.
Reaching out for Linda and rolling her by the corner of the bed Samuel turned his head to look back his heart pounding at what he will see behind him then
Ring! Ring! Ring!
“And good morning good people of neotown on this fine spring morning this is your host max field as we celebrate our 20th anniversary since opening in 1989, this truly brings tears to my eyes as I worked here for 10 years so please have a great day because I sure will, let's hear it from you, our townspeople what they plan to do today to appreciate the radio shack” Samuel woke up as the only thing behind him was the radio with the alarm system active.
“Hmm! what a weird nightmare. Am I going crazy, I swear something breathing on my forehead is a new level of terrifying” he thought looking at the radio closely?
“Darn it, hate this place already, Linda wake up its 7 am you don’t want to be late for work at the school on your first day,” he said
Watching Linda still not waking up he thought “oh yeah I forgot Mariah must have kept her up all night she probably didn’t get much sleep singing her self-composed lullabies all night but too bad work can’t wait” shaking her by the hip as she huddled herself inside the blankets groaning in annoyance
“mmmh two more minutes dad” raising an eyebrow at what she said Samuel pushed her down the bed
Thud!
“ouch! Hey why did you do that for?” said Linda her head springing up from the floor
“I'm sorry my dear Linda but we have to go or you’ll be late for the daycare after I'm done at the police station will come to pick you up,” said Samuel walking to the bathroom
“ahh okay, honey let me go fix up Mariah” as she walked out of the room and arriving inside Mariah’s room a small 4 meter wide and 5 meters long in a rectangular shape and a crib with a spinning mobile above it right next to a table with a baby monitor.
Charlie was sleeping by Mariah’s legs and when she noticed someone was coming, she became alert “ohh my Charlie’s motherly instinct is active no wonder Mariah has been quiet, she must have felt safe with you” not considering her compliments Charlie jumped out of the crib and walked out the room.
“We do have a Weird cat don’t we Mariah,” said Linda lifting Mariah out the crib to bathe and get her ready.
Walking out of the house and seeing the neighbors still not out gave a lonely atmosphere “even Darrel is nowhere to be found” said Samuel looking at the empty street.
“honey move out the door we need to hurry,” said Linda
“Sorry dear a beautiful morning like this and the neighbors are indoors this is weird or maybe I’m too outdoorsy” chuckled Samuel at how ridiculous that sounds since back at the city his colleagues complained how he never left the office unless it was to investigate a case.
Driving through Neotown felt like a ghost town as not much traffic was present for a working week, the amazing scenery overwhelmed the emptiness though, with a black almost shinning well-painted road with no potholes, the shops on the sidewalks added a lively air with its vibrant advertisement boards and statues, even the flower shops had some flower pots placed in front of the door and beautiful manikins wearing beautiful fashion designer brands where placed behind the window, thinking back at the city young teens would drool at the sight of such wonderful clothing.
“wow honey for a small town the shops do go all out when they want to attract customers,” said Linda with her eyes wide open from shock.
Eyeing a pawn shop an old man with a bold wrinkly nerve filled head walked out the door wearing a fishier man jacket, brown boots, grey pants and holding a fishing rod and a bucket walking toward a yellow vintage pickup truck with mud an grease on its body, watching the old man place his stuff on the back and lift his head to look directly into his eyes to give out the creepiest smiles Samuel has ever seen revealing yellow-brown unbrushed teeth, Samuel ignored the old man by looking away and kept driving.
“well Dear I think they are hiding something with all these ornaments I mean it’s not like it’s an important holiday or anything were nearing the end of March for crying out loud,” said Samuel holding his steering wheel tight feeling a little uneasy ever since his scary awakening this morning.
“I swear if it wasn’t for my brother's death, I would have thought twice coming to a small town like this with my family,” thought Samuel turning his car to the right and immediately saw a large building more than 100 meters wide from the front with a signboard NEOTOWN MISSION school and behind the board three towers and one in the middle had a cross on top with a long narrow path cutting through the green lawn from the sidewalk to the red-bricked building, “huh? Linda dear are you sure this isn’t a church I can’t believe this is a kindergarten you'll be teaching at,” said Samuel
Parking the car by the other side of the road Linda by the passenger seat looked out the window “well I'm not shocked though they did say I’ll be teaching at a mission school and the nuns have an excellent place to take care of little missy here.” Said Linda unbuckling Mariah from the back seat her butt almost brushing Samuels face.
“couldn't you have done that by getting outside the car,” asked Samuel
“whatever your thinking stops it! Now pass me the bag” said Linda with a smile as she placed Mariah on her chest and opened the door to walk out and grabbed the bag from her husband's hand.
“will come to pick you guys up later after work, hope to find a car for you to use soon dear.” Said Samuel waving goodbye
Watching them walk away to he took a glance at the top window noticing a shadow of a human standing by the window, “swear the folks in this town are weird won't even come outside to welcome newcomers at their working place, I hope they won't give my dear Linda and Mariah a hard time” he said driving off.
Time passed
“I guess this is the place, “said Samuel as he parked his car on a parking space on the other side of the road and walked across the street toward a white building with black tiles a sign reading Neotown police station above the brown door, and walked in.
A black acrylic tiled floor matched Samuels black shoes and pants and made his white shirt and grey tie standout as he entered, causing all eyes to turn to him and even getting some ladies eyebrows raised as he walked to the receptionist counter closest to the door where a lady wearing a blue police uniform with the badge pinned on her left breast, her red hair wrapped into a ponytail, a height of 1.3 meters and her appearance was fair with slim brows and black almond eyes, watching her as he approached she had skinny build looked timid and young as she looked around 19 years old.
“Good day fellow citizen how can I help you today,” said the young girl with a smile
“Looks like she mistakes me for a civilian asking to help she must be new to this too,” thought Samuel
“Hello miss I’m detective Asphalt came here on transfer from Quill city, I have an appointment with Captain Hughes please tell him I'm here,” said Samuel with a poker face
Seeing the eyes of the young lady widen up and apologizing for jumping to conclusions she picked up the phone and called “Dad…err I mean Captain we have a Detective Asphalt here looking for you, ah yes sir will bring him over immediately” said the girl hurriedly
“he says he will meet you so please follow me please,” said the young lady as she walked to a passage
Following her through the corridor that had four doors on each side, she walked to the end and opened the door walking inside a dark room the marble floor glinting from the filament light bulb a man under the bulb as if a showman receiving the spotlight seated on a brown wooden short stool wearing brown pants a blue shirt pulled up to his elbows and holding a lighted up cigar between his fingers on his left hand as he massaged his temples his eyes closed facing the 5-meter long cell bar door that had nothing but darkness inside.
Samuel tried to look closely into the cell but still saw nothing but heard humming “hmm hm hm hhm hm” the tone sounded more like a young child.
The man opened his eyes revealing Brown colored bloodshot eyes with bags under his eyes” Tell me once again you bastard why did you kill your parents?”
The humming stopped and Samuel heard a young voice of that of a child resound from the darkness “What is the use of parents who can't even tell a decent bedtime story to their child, they should just die I say” replied the voice of a boy with a cackle that sent shivers down Samuel’s spine.
