Chapter Four

He then decided that he would turn himself in to the authorities and take whatever penalty they thought was appropriate. Although he knew it wouldn't be simple, it was the only way to begin atoning for his wrongdoing. Prosper departed from the security of his cabin and set out towards the closest town with a sorrowful heart. He was determined to complete the difficult and lengthy voyage. He went straight to the police station after finally arriving in town to report himself in. Although the fur-covered man startled the officers, they paid attention as he explained what had happened and why he had come. At first, the authorities weren't sure they believed Prosper's claim, but he persisted. He spoke to them about his experiences as a werewolf and the injustice he had seen. They gradually gained an understanding of his viewpoint. When the police officers suggested a means for Prosper to avoid serving his term, he was shocked. He knew what he had done was terrible and that he would have to pay for it. He wasn't looking for any favors. He attempted to gently deny their offer at first, but they persisted, calling him a "good man" who had merely made a mistake. Prosper's rage started to grow. How could they try to deny him the opportunity to make amends for his actions? Prosper suddenly lost control of his emotions and shoved one of the officers away from him before yelling at them to let him stay in the cell to complete his sentence. But his outburst did not amuse the officers. They confined him and applied tremendous pressure to control him. Prosper was battered and injured, yet he was unyielding. No matter the price, he was going to be held accountable for his actions. So he was sent back to his cell with a heavy heart, left to think about the repercussions of his actions. Prosper was weak after the pounding, but it only strengthened his resolve to make things right. Prosper ultimately received a prison term of a few years for killing Anita's partner. Although it was a severe penalty, he understood that he deserved it. During his incarceration, he thought back on his deeds and tried to reconcile himself with them. He understood he had to start afresh when he was eventually freed. He was unable to return to his previous life, yet he was still able to change the world by drawing on his experiences. He began working as a volunteer at a wildlife refuge, using his werewolf skills to assist take care of and save the creatures. Prosper eventually started to feel fulfilled and have a feeling of purpose in his new life. Even though he had made mistakes in the past, he was committed to making things right this time. And who knows, maybe he'd find love once more in the future. But for now, he THE MEETING After being beaten by the officers, Prosper's body was still throbbing when he was placed into his cell. He heard approaching footsteps as he lay on his bed, attempting to block out the discomfort. When he raised his head, he noticed a tall, hulking man with a shaved head standing in front of his cell. The man's voice was rough; he said, "I heard you're an alpha." Unsure of what to say, Prosper remained silent. I'm in charge of the convicts here, the man said. And I'm open to working something out with you. If you can help me, I'll see to it that you're well-cared for while you're in here. Prosper arched an ear. What sort of agreement is it? The man grinned. "Let's just say there are certain things that need to be done around here, and I need someone with your skills." The guy smiled. "Let's just say there are some things around here that need doing, and I need someone with your skills," she said. Prosper considered his options for a while. He wasn't sure what he was capable of anymore because he was still in shock from the recent happenings. However, he was aware that in order to survive, he would do whatever it took to assist this man. "Fine," Prosper replied. What is it that you want me to do? Chapter 10: The Setup For the following few weeks, Prosper assisted Jack, the inmate group's leader, in keeping the prison in order. Jack was vicious and would use any means necessary to achieve his goals, including violence. However, Prosper discovered that he was adept at this line of work and that Jack would be better off having him on staff because of his strength and quick thinking. One day, Jack approached Prosper privately. He said, "A new prisoner is coming in today. "Like you, he's an alpha, and he's giving me trouble. Please look after him for me. Heart racing, Prosper nodded. He had a gut instinct that something was wrong. And sure enough, when the new prisoner showed in, he was unyielding. He was an intimidating, wiry man with piercing blue eyes who appeared to enjoy teasing Jack and his men. Prosper made an effort to convince him, but the man seemed uninterested in hearing him out. It all came down to a fight in the end, and Prosper won. But he was aware that this was just the start. Now that the other convicts would perceive him as a threat, he would need to be constantly on guard. Prosper's involvement in the jail population grew throughout the course of the following few weeks. As he became more aware of the abuses being committed by the guards and the other prisoners, he became more enraged and frustrated. But he also understood that he had to maintain his composure. He needed to maintain his attention and be constantly prepared for the next challenge. And then the challenge materialized one day. By distributing false information about Prosper to undermine his authority, Jack had been working behind the scenes to turn the other prisoners against him. Prosper was aware that he needed to act. To prove once and for all who was in charge, he brought Jack out and challenged him to a fight. Both guys were skilled fighters, and neither was ready to concede during the tough match. However, Prosper ultimately prevailed, winning the respect and admiration of the other prisoners. The Redemption Prosper gradually came to the conclusion that his existence now served a different purpose. He had been given a second chance, an opportunity to right the wrongs not just for himself but for everyone who had been wronged by the system. Prosper gained a reputation for being a friend and mentor to many of the prisoners as the days passed. He assisted them with their issues and pushed them to make life-enhancing adjustments. He even organized a small reading club for himself and a few other prisoners to read and talk about famous works of literature. The prison's administrator visited Prosper's cell one day and requested to meet with him. Although Prosper was initially wary, he soon understood that the prison warden was impressed with his leadership and wanted to hire him as a mentor to other prisoners. Prosper accepted the invitation and started regularly collaborating with other prisoners. He assisted them in honing their abilities and talents, and he motivated them to strive for a better future. Even better, he developed a gardening program so that the prisoners could grow their own food and learn about sustainable living. Prosper was successful, yet he never lost sight of his prior errors. He kept striving to improve himself because he was aware that he needed to atone for the suffering he had caused. Prosper came into the alpha who had set him up one day while he was strolling through the jail yard. Prosper briefly felt enraged and hostile as the alpha neared him. But then he reflected on his recent change in perspective. He inhaled deeply before speaking to the alpha in a cool manner. To his amazement, the alpha expressed regret for his previous actions and begged for pardon. Prosper acknowledged the apology, and they parted ways. Prosper was granted his freedom after serving his entire sentence. He was resolved to start again and use his past to benefit others. In order to fulfill his dream of working as a probation officer, he enrolled in college and studied criminal justice. Prosper would later consider how much he had developed and evolved as he thought back on his time in jail. Although he was aware of his past mistakes, he was proud of the person he had become.
