Sophia on getting to her room in the basement angrily slammed the door shut.
She knew she was worth nothing in the family and so she’d be used as a scapegoat but it still hurt her.
It hurt her so deeply to be so worthless in the sight of her biological father.
Sophia lamented as tears dropped from her eyes onto her pillow.
“Oh Mom, how I wish you were still alive. My life wouldn’t be like this. It’d be much better.”
Putting her hand around her neck, she pulled out the necklace her mom had given her for her 12th birthday shortly before she died. It was a memento she held on to dearly.
She wrapped the necklace around her hand and instantly felt at peace.
Shortly after, sleep took her to a land faraway from there.
She dreamt of her mother, she was laying in her laps and her mother was comforting her.
“Sophia my daughter, I know things are tough and hard at the moment but trust me they’ll get better. Just be strong. Remember always to stay grounded. I love you so much my daughter and I miss you.
Waking up with tears in her eyes, Sophia remembered her mom’s words from the dream and held on to them. She vowed that she’d find a way out of this situation. She wouldn’t get married to a handicapped man who would only pull her back in life. No matter what tricks her father and step mom may pull, she’d find a way out of the situation.
Feeling better after, she got up and noticed that for the first time in years, she hadn’t woken up early to do her chores and her stepmom hadn’t made a fuss about it.
Feeling like something was off, she walked to her door and turned it only to discover that it was locked. By the look of things it had been locked all night. No wonder no one has come to get her for the chores she missed.
“Seems like my step mom isn’t playing and she wants to go all in. Guess I’ll have to step up my game too.”
After realizing just how low they were going to stoop to force her to agree to the marriage, she decided she wouldn’t back down too.
In an attempt to get ready for the day, she freshened up and changed her clothes. Then sat at her reading table. She took out her scrapbook from her younger years and started glancing through it.
Looking at a picture of her 10th birthday where her mom and dad posed with her, she couldn’t help the tears that dropped from her eyes. “
If only we could all go back to this period, I would do everything in my power to preserve this moments.
As she continued going through the scrapbook, she saw a picture of her mom with her death date written beside it.
Shocked by the fact that her mom’s death anniversary was tomorrow and that it had completely escaped her mind. She couldn’t help but feel guilty.
Over the years, she had always tried to visit her mom’s grave during her death anniversary. But the past few weeks have been really stressful and so it had skipped her mind.
Tomorrow was her mom’s death anniversary and also the day of her engagement to the third son of the Mu family. There must be a way out of this situation and she’ll make sure she finds it.
For the rest of the day, she laid low without making a fuss. Around 3pm in the afternoon, a knock sounded at the door; thinking she was finally been freed, Sophia rushed to open the door.
Her stepmother stood at the door with a tray of food in her hands, pushing the tray into Sophia’s hands she said “Eat up and don’t even think of leaving this room the whole of today and tomorrow. You will not ruin my plans with whatever you might have in mind.”
With those words, she slammed the door and Sophia heard the keys turn, locking her in and then the sound of her stepmother’s retreating footsteps.
Feeling defeated once again, Sophia looked at the tray in her hands. She noticed that the food was looking more appealing than usual meaning that she was served from the food of the house owners and not servants.
Looking at the time, she noticed that it was already past noon and she still hadn’t eaten breakfast. She had forfeited dinner in her angry state the night before and now she was feeling really weak. She ate the food and continued waiting.
She was sure there would be an opportunity to escape soon and so she packed a small bag of her belongings. There weren’t many things that were really hers and so it was easy enough to pack her few stuff and leave the remaining behind.
She took the scrapbook full of her mother’s memories, the only picture of her mother that she has, a few clothes and the little money that she had saved up over the years.
Around evening, she had a car drive out and shortly after that one of the servants who was also her friend came into the room to hand her a plate of food.
“Hi, here is your dinner. I will be back to get the plate.”
Before she could leave, Sophia grabbed her arm and pleaded with her.
“Wait Sonia, I need your help. I need to get out of this house and leave, please help me.”
Avoiding her eyes, Sonia removed her arm from Sophia’s and told her “I’m sorry I can’t help you, I was warned not to help you by your stepmother before they left for their function. I might lose my job.”
Feeling defeated, Sophia tried once more
“I know my stepmother would have threatened you but you’re one of the few friends I have in this house and I helped you when your parents needed a place to stay. I linked them up with my friend Steve, who helped them find cheap apartment. This is the only time you can repay me, please.”
“I know and I appreciate your help but I’m sorry I can’t do anything that will jeopardize my job. I’m really sorry.” Sonia said, turned away from Sophia and ran away from the room.
Sophia knew she couldn’t blame her as she was in a tight spot but she couldn’t help but feel defeated. Summoning up strength she said to herself “No, my stepmother and father can’t win like this. I need to do something.”
Going to the door, Sophia turned the knob and noticed that it gave way. Sonia had forgotten to lock the door in her haste to get away from her.
