RESILIENT HEARTS

I just left the MD’S office, I still can’t believe my career is officially over. I was walking dejectedly down the road from the company, while the scorching sun was roasting my back. A company I’ve worked over three years for believed that lying old hag over me. Sir Clinton Wilson has been on my neck since he became o the company’s biggest share holder and investor a year ago. He’s been trying to get me in his bed from the very day I was sent to deliver some documents to him. This man is grown enough to be my dad if not older, but I wouldn’t do that, and he threatened to deal with me. Last week he specifically directed our MD to give the contract to me and that he’d only sign it If I was the one who sent it. This man made a hotel room our meeting place. The moment I found out, I knew something was off and decided to be myself and tell him off if he made his advances again. I had no idea the man had it all planned out. When I got there this shameless grandpa said to me “You know the reason you’re here” and I said to him “Yea, I’ve come to deliver the hardcopy of the contract to you” he laughed so hard and said “This might really be the end of the road for you if you don’t give in this time. See girl, I can make your boss promote you instantly to any level you want if you promise to lay with me” . I was so disgusted immediately he said that again “Mr. Wilson, I already made it clear to you that I’d never fall for this, I might need the promotion you talked about but I’d rather remain in my position than sleep with you, I can never do that” I said to him angrily. “Look here child, your company is at the edge of losing almost a three million dollar contract all because of your strong headedness, think twice, you’ll definitely loose your job and you’ll be back on the streets” he threatened. I left angrily with the documents and returned to the company only to get the shock of my life. That man lied to my boss saying I was there to seduce him because he was rich and it wasn’t even the first or second time. I was in tears and tried to explain to my boss but he didn’t listen, I fell at his feet and begged but my boss’ mind was already made up, he believed the man or rather didn’t want to loose a big client and chose to believe him over me and sent me on a suspension. I went back today just to see he had a change of mind and was told that I’ve been relieved of my duties and I already had a replacement. Now I’m really back on the streets with no job. My phone beeped and it was my soul sister Celine who sent me a text asking how it went. I quickly typed “Omo no show, I’ve really lost the job”. She called back almost immediately after receiving the text but I couldn’t take it cause I was walking. I texted her that I’ll call her when I get home. I flagged down a cab and drove home. “Jas, you’re back, oh my child you don’t look good at all, same news?” my mum Florence said coming over to sit with me. “ I wouldn’t be like this if it was the same story, I’ve been replaced, I have no job at Wegmans anymore” I told her sadly. “ oh dear, it’s well, come here” she said motioning me for a hug and that was all I needed at the moment I quickly hugged her, burying my face in her shoulder and inhaling her sweet fragrance. “ God will not fail you my child because you didn’t do anything bad or ungodly, you’ll find another job with a higher pay, okay?” my mum consoled. I couldn’t say anything, I just disengaged from the embrace picked my handbag and shoes and went in to my room. “ Have your bath and come out for lunch, Jas” came mum as I was ascending the stairs “ I don’t have the appetite” I said curtly not even giving her a glance. “But it’s your favorite my dear” she tried to persuade me. “ Mum please just let me be I need a lone time and don’t come knocking on my door “ I stated and she kept mute. Entering my room, I bolted it and even locked it and placed the keys on the table, placed my bag and shoe on the rack and flung myself on my bed. Tears ran down my face uncontrollably, I felt so bad and that was all I could do at the moment. I had plans for myself and loosing my job and boyfriend in the space of five days wasn’t part if it. My first love Desmond just wedded his wife three days ago, apparently he was seeing someone else whom he loved more than myself while he was still dating me hence his reason for getting married to her and not me, I called him later that day to hear from the horse's mouth but all this heartless guy could say to me was 'It is what it is Jasmine, I made my choice, you have to move on' I was in deep pain that day, I cried my eyes and heart out, couldn't eat anything or leave the room, I felt like my whole life would come to an end that day, Celine later came by that day and cheered me up that was how I was able to get over the whole trauma quickly. My phone started ringing, I didn’t check it because I thought it was mum, yea, she could be like that sometimes just to gain my attention. After the second ring I decided to take the call and yell at mummy but to my surprise it was Celine I quickly picked up “How far babes, where you drop your phone, I done call you twice now” Celine said the moment I picked up the call “ I’m sorry I thought it was mummy calling” I apologized. “ What happened darling, have you been crying, your voice seems so down?” Typical caring Celine asked in a worried tone. “ I couldn’t help myself, I’ve lost my job what will you have me do?” I said almost crying. “ it’s fine dear, don’t cry again I’m coming over now, we’ll talk about it” she said. I checked the time and it was just few minutes past 1 pm. “ But it’s not closing time and it’s past lunch time” I told her “ Is that what you’re worried about I’ll sort myself out, I'll be there soon” she said and ended the call. Celine is the last out of five, she’s a Civil Engineer and she works at a big oil company. She’s a year older than myself and her family is loaded. We’ve been good friends from high school from the time she lost her mum. She was just lonely and depressed and that was when we became friends. Back then she'd always keep to her, isolate herself from the rest of the class, avoided social activities in school, I tried my best to losen her up and that was when I knew she had lost her mum, we became very close after that. She’s really the one to always count on, she’s always been there for me emotionally, physically, financially She’s more than just a friend to me to me.
