Chapter one: Blossoming Alex
The first day back at school felt like a dream.
Alex adjusted the strap of her satchel as she walked through the front gates of Cresthill High. Heads turned, conversations paused, and for once, none of it had anything to do with her tripping over her shoelace or dropping her books. This time, people noticed her - really noticed.
Her summer transformation had been more than just physical. Yes, she'd started jogging in the mornings, doing yoga in the living room while her dad tinkered in the garage. She swapped out soda for smoothies and devoured fashion and makeup tutorials like novels. But more than that, she found herself. Her confidence was still wrapped in a little shyness, but it simmered now, like a hidden gem finally catching the light.
Her curly auburn hair bounced with each step, her hazel eyes catching flecks of green when the sun hit just right. Her favorite glasses still perched on her nose, grounding her - reminding her she was still Alex. But now, she had curves she didn't hide under oversized hoodies, and when she smiled, it wasn't just polite - it was radiant.
"Alex?" a voice practically choked behind her.
She turned.
Aaron.
Gone was the annoying guy who always teased her about her messy ponytail or her "suspiciously fast" typing skills. For a heartbeat, the entire school faded away. His sea-blue eyes widened, his jaw slack. He looked like he'd just taken a punch to the gut - the good kind.
"Hey Aaron," she said casually, lips curling in a half-smile.
His gaze swept over her quickly - not disrespectfully, but like he didn't quite believe she was real. "Holy crap," he muttered under his breath.
Seth appeared out of nowhere, sliding between them with protective big brother energy. "Alright, cool it. That's my sister, remember?"
Aaron blinked and ran a hand through his dark hair. "Right. Of course. Just... wow."
Later that night, Alex booted up her PC, headphones in place. "Warfront Heroes" loaded up, the comforting music filling her ears. A ping lit up her screen.
Potatokiller: You logged on late. School suck that bad?
AuburnArrow: You have no idea. It was... weird.
Potatokiller: Weird how?
She hesitated, then typed quickly.
AuburnArrow: People stared. Like, really stared. I guess I look different after summer?
Potatokiller: You always sounded like you were cute. Now they just finally caught up?
Her heart thudded. He always flirted - just a little - but something about the way he typed that made her stomach twist.
Over the next few days, Aaron was constantly around. At their house. In her kitchen. Laughing with Seth in the living room while she made tea just a few feet away.
And every time, he looked at her. Like he was trying not to.
He was charming. Ridiculously hot. And behind his usual cocky smile, he was nervous around her now - like teasing had turned into something deeper. Something real.
They'd catch each other's eyes in the hallway. A glance. A shared smirk. A brush of hands in the kitchen. Each moment lingered like a secret waiting to burst.
Then came the party.
Her dad was out of town for a racing convention. Sophie, of course, saw her chance.
"You're wearing this," Sophie said, holding up the tiniest black dress Alex had ever seen.
"I... I don't know."
Sophie rolled her eyes, already shoving her into the bathroom. "Alex, you're a snack. It's time the world knows it."
The mirror didn't lie. The dress clung in the right places, her curls framed her face perfectly, and her confidence shimmered just beneath her nervous smile.
By the time the party hit full swing, Alex had downed two drinks and was giggling with Sophie when she caught Aaron's eye across the room. He was frozen mid-laugh with Tatum, his gaze locked on her like she'd walked into his dream.
"You okay?" she asked when he approached her, his hand lightly resting on the small of her back as he guided her away from the crowd.
"Am I okay?" he repeated. "Alex... you look like trouble."
They ended up in her room. The music downstairs was loud, but all she could hear was her heartbeat.
"I think I'm a little drunk," she whispered.
"I think I'm a lot in over my head," he replied.
His hand was warm against her cheeks, and before she knew it, their lips were brushing. A kiss - slow, unsure at first, but it depended, stole her breath. His hands at her waist, her fingers in his hair. It was heat and sweetness and every untold thing between them finally finding a voice.
And then-
"Alex?! Are you up here?" Sophie's voice echoed.
They jumped apart just in time for Sophie and Ben to burst in. Aaron cleared his throat. Alex blushed, but something inside her had shifted - something bold and awake.
Later that night, lying in bed, phone in hand, she opened Warfront Heroes.
AuburnArrow: You'll never believe what happened tonight.
Potatokiller: Try me.
AuburnArrow: I kissed someone. My first real kiss. And I can't stop thinking about it.
She paused.
Potatokiller:... Was it Aaron?
She froze. Her heart skipped a beat.
AuburnArrow: How do you-
Potatokiller: Alex.. it's me. Aaron.
The screen blurred as she stared in disbelief.
AuburnArrow: No. Freaking. Way.
Potatokiller: I've known for a while. I just... didn't want to mess it up. But I think I'm already too far gone.
