Chapter Thirty-Seven I’d never heard a silence so complete. There were no shaky breaths or quiet sobs. I don’t know if any of the others cried. I didn’t. Not even for the kids. I was like an animal who’d caught a predator’s scent. Paralyzed by the knowledge that danger surrounded me, and certain that whatever prowled through the darkness wanted me dead. No one mentioned taking turns watching or anyone resting. We all just waited, listening for signs of whoever had slaughtered the kep in the lookout tower.
