Chapter Twelve The scent was the first thing I noticed as I stepped toward the door. It stung my nose, but not with the same rancid stench as a rotting corpse. It was almost stronger. Like liquor and antiseptic mixed together. A long hall waited for me beyond the guard. Light crept through the doorway at the other end, bright enough I could see how polished the white tiles on the floor, walls, and ceiling of the corridor were. I’d never seen anything so clean in my life. I cringed as I stepped into the hall, worried someone would jump out and yell at me for leaving footprints. The guard closed the door behind me with a click, and the last hint of the club’s music disappeared. Forcing myself to walk calmly, I headed toward the open doorway at the end of the hall.
