Chapter 1.
Hannah had always believed she understood the harshness of the world. Raised in a home where love was a rare commodity, she learned early on to shield herself from the pain of disappointment. The love her parents had once promised her had turned into a twisted dance of neglect, resentment, and the occasional outburst of anger. By the time she was a teenager, she had long stopped believing in the fairy tales she read as a child. Her heart, once open and innocent, was now a fortress, one that she’d built brick by brick, carefully constructed with each betrayal and each wound. The walls she’d put up were high and thick, impervious to the world outside. She found solace in small things. Work became her escape, her sanctuary. At thirty-two, she was a respected kindergarten teacher, nurturing the next generation with the patience and care she had never received. She was good at her job. In fact, she was excellent. The children adored her, and their laughter, their innocent joy, filled the emptiness inside her. There was something beautiful about the simplicity of their love, pure, untainted, and, most importantly, not demanding. Her colleagues would sometimes comment on her lack of a personal life. She would shrug, dismissing the topic with a half-smile. But deep down, she wasn’t interested in relationships. At least not the kind she had witnessed growing up. Love, she had come to realize, was nothing more than a mirage, a fleeting moment that inevitably vanished, leaving only the bitter taste of regret behind. Still, there was a part of her that longed for something more. She had glimpsed that longing a few years ago, when she had met Daniel. He was her husband, the man who had promised her everything. He had swept her off her feet with his charm and devotion. But like all the promises of love in her life, he had been fragile. At first, it was easy to ignore the cracks in their relationship. She was too busy with her career, and he, too consumed by his work. They made it work, or so she thought. The little things, the small moments of intimacy, were enough to keep her from questioning the stability of their bond. But deep down, she knew the truth. Something was wrong. One afternoon, after a long day at work, she decided to surprise Daniel. She had taken a few hours off, hoping to plan a quiet evening at home. The thought of reconnecting with him after a long, stressful week was something she was looking forward to. But nothing could have prepared her for what she found when she stepped into their home. The sight was enough to make her blood run cold. There, on their matrimonial bed, was Daniel, naked and tangled in the bed sheets with none other than her only sister, Melissa. Her heart stopped. Time seemed to slow as her mind tried to make sense of what her eyes were seeing. It was a nightmare, something that couldn’t possibly be real. But it was. The betrayal was as sharp as it was devastating. Hannah stood frozen in the doorway, unable to process the horror unfolding before her. Daniel and Melissa looked up, their faces flushed with guilt. But there was something else in their eyes, something cold, something that told her they knew she had caught them in the act. Melissa’s expression was one of surprise, but there was no remorse, no apology. Daniel, on the other hand, looked like a deer caught in headlights. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. The silence was deafening. Hannah couldn’t breathe. Her body went numb, and her mind scrambled for a way to cope with the agony surging through her. The world felt like it was spinning out of control, and all she wanted was to wake up from this nightmare. But it wasn’t a dream. It was her reality. “I…” Her voice cracked as she tried to speak, but the words wouldn’t come. Instead, she turned on her heel and fled, slamming the door behind her. She had to leave. She had to get out. The suffocating weight of betrayal crushed her chest as she stumbled into the hallway, her legs unsteady beneath her. Outside, the cool night air hit her like a slap in the face, but it did nothing to clear the fog in her mind. She walked aimlessly, her steps uncoordinated, her body shaking with the force of the emotions she could no longer suppress. She didn’t know where she was going. She didn’t care. All she could think about was the ache in her chest, the way her heart had shattered into a thousand pieces, each one more painful than the last. Somehow, she found herself at the park, sitting on a cold bench, her hands folded tightly in her lap. The tears came then, silent and steady, like a river that could no longer be contained. She wasn’t sure how long she sat there, lost in the storm of her emotions. But eventually, the tears stopped. She felt numb now, like a hollow shell of the person she had been just hours before. The pain was still there, deep inside her, but it had transformed into something else. Anger. Fury. She could never go back to the life she had known. The life that had promised safety and security. The life that had been ripped away in an instant. She didn’t know what the future held, but she knew one thing for sure: love was no longer an option. It had betrayed her, and she would never let herself fall victim to it again. The walls she had built around her heart now seemed more like a necessity than a choice. They would protect her, keep her safe from the world outside. She would focus on her career, on the children she cared for at the kindergarten, and on proving to herself that she was enough. But love? That was for other people. People who could afford to be vulnerable. Hannah wiped her eyes, stood up, and walked away from the park, her heart heavy but her resolve stronger than ever. She was no longer the woman she had been. She had to be something else now. Stronger. Smarter. Unbreakable. And so, with a heart of stone, she walked into the unknown future.
