Chapter 1
It was a warm summer afternoon, the kind where the heat softened under the slow crawl of dark clouds gathering in the sky. The neighborhood sat quiet and quaint, but alive with the sound of children playing, their laughter carried by the cool breeze before the impending rain. Erica, a ten-year-old girl, sat at the kitchen island, absentmindedly rolling an apple slice from one hand to the other. She looked up at her father, her wide brown eyes reflecting the calm before the storm. “Daddy, can we go meet Mommy soon?” Her father, Philander, a towering man of 6'5 with soft eyes that belied his strength, chuckled. “As soon as you're done with your snack, Lil E.” He ruffled her hair and leaned down to press a quick kiss on her forehead. Erica smiled brightly and popped the last piece of apple into her mouth. This was her favorite part of the day: the short walk to the lab near the pack house, where her mother worked. She jumped off the barstool, her small feet pattering across the floor as she scrambled for her sneakers. Philander stood by the door, watching her with amusement, the same way he did every day. It was his favorite time too, the moment he saw his fated mate after hours of separation. Her warm, amber eyes and radiant smile always brought him peace, a sense of completeness. “Hurry up, kiddo,” he teased, as she hurried over with a grin. “All set!” Erica exclaimed, then paused. “Oh! Daddy, we need to bring Mommy an umbrella! It’s going to rain soon.” She grabbed her small lilac umbrella and handed him a larger dark purple one. Just as Philander took it, his body tensed. Without warning, he fell to his knees, a guttural, heart-wrenching cry escaping his lips. His face twisted in agony, as though something deep within him had shattered. Erica's heart skipped, the room suddenly feeling too small, too dark. Before she could reach him, his body shifted, fur sprouting as his form rippled and changed. The enormous black wolf that took his place let out a mournful howl before tearing through the front door, leaving splinters in his wake as he disappeared into the storm. Erica gasped, stumbling back, falling onto the cold tile floor. Pain shot through her chest, sharp and unrelenting, like a thread pulled too tight. Tears filled her eyes, her small hands clenching her shirt as if that could stop the ache. "Daddy…" she whispered, her voice trembling. "Something’s wrong." Her thoughts spiraled, grasping for answers, but none came. The house around her felt suffocating. She was alone, drowning in fear. The air had grown thick, the shadows darker. She needed to find her father—to understand what had just happened. "Erica! Erica, sweetheart, where are you?" A deep voice boomed from outside, followed by a softer one. “It’s Mr. Moore! Amanda's dad! We’re coming in!” His familiar voice cut through the haze of her panic. Within moments, her neighbors burst through the shattered doorway—Mr. Moore, a large, burly man, and Mrs. Moore, her best friend Amanda’s mom, both faces etched with concern. Erica ran toward them, her small body shaking. She flung herself into Mrs. Moore’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably. “Something happened to Daddy! Is Mommy okay? We were supposed to pick her up—what’s happening?” Mrs. Moore, her face pale, hugged the girl tightly, her own heart heavy with the weight of the unspoken truth. “Oh, sweet girl… your dad felt something happen to your mom.” Erica pulled back, her eyes wide with confusion and fear. “What do you mean? Where is she? She always walks home with us!” But before Mrs. Moore could answer, an enormous white wolf appeared in the doorway, his silver ears twitching, sapphire-blue eyes scanning the scene. Alpha Wayne. His low growl filled the room, a warning, a call to action. "Alpha," Mr. Moore said, bowing his head. “Let my wife take care of Erica. I’ll go after Philander and help him search for Elowen.” The Alpha nodded, turning to lead the way. In one fluid motion, Mr. Moore shifted into his silver wolf form, casting a glance back at his wife and Erica before following his leader into the darkening woods. “Mommy…” Erica whispered, her heart pounding in her chest. Mrs. Moore’s face tightened, her soft brown eyes betraying the fear she tried so hard to mask. She had felt it too—the break in the bond that connected their pack to Elowen, Erica’s mother. The sudden loss of scent, the absence of presence. Elowen was gone. As the storm began to break, thunder rumbled ominously above them, and rain fell in heavy sheets. “Erica, honey…” Mrs. Moore’s voice cracked slightly. “I don’t know what’s happening, but I promise, your father and the others are doing everything they can to find her. You’ll stay with us until it’s safe.” Erica’s legs buckled beneath her, her small frame collapsing onto the floor. “I want my mommy,” she cried, her sobs filling the house as the storm outside raged on. Mrs. Moore tried to lift her, but the child’s body convulsed violently in her arms. A sharp gasp escaped Erica’s lips as her eyes began to flicker between warm brown and bright gold, her little body writhing with a pain that wasn’t her own. “ERICA!” Mrs. Moore cried out, gripping her tighter as panic seized her. She had never seen this before, not in one so young. “I just want to sleep…” Erica whispered, her consciousness slipping, the world blurring into darkness. The last thing she saw was a boy, slightly older than her, watching her with intense eyes before everything faded away.
