22 Mandy slammed her foot on the brake pedal, spun the steering wheel at the same time, and the rear of the vehicle skidded broadside, stopping just centimeters from where the man kneeled with his head bowed. A cloud of dust and fine pebbles, thrown up by the tyres, peppered the man’s kneeling form and settled slowly around him. Mandy threw open the door, climbed out, and hurried to the back of the car. She opened the rear door and stepped back. “Get in!” she ordered. The man did not move. He mumbled incoherently, giving no indication he even realised Mandy had returned. A thin, elastic-like, string of drool hung from his lips until it finally broke, and plopped into the dirt in front of his knees. “Get in!” Mandy ordered again.
