Chapter 3

Gain’s POV It has been two weeks since I arose and all I can smell is that sickeningly sweet aroma that calls to me. I didn’t know how to stop and I couldn’t even fight it because it came from my fated one. And to make matters worse, she is human! “Explain to me how you managed to attain her blood if she is human. The closest piece of land to the vampire parts belongs to that half a man, Duke Hamilton. Tell me, where?” I asked my second hand, Shawn, who had been running things since my disappearance. Apparently, he was just that good. I had told them to locate the boy and as soon as they did, they would put him in a position befitting his mind. For him to be this high in rank means that he is smart enough not to cross me. Good! He visibly shivered as if hiding a big secret from me and this made me feel suspicious. “She is my friend and she is visiting the area. She is from the Hamilton house hold.” He answers with a bowed head and I felt my fangs elongate. My demon, something that only high ranking vampires or pure bloods have, started reacting to his statement. It was akin to what the werewolves call their wolf only its more vicious and ferocious. Like those wet mutts, vampires are very protective and possessive of what’s theirs. Even more than those mutts. I approached the little boy who seemed no older than sixteen to me who had lived for thousands of years. He was that young but he is a brilliant boy. And it was a promise to someone that I had to care for him. “Little fledgling, I am way older than you. I hope that you don’t have any hopes on what’s mine.” I released my aura unknowingly making all the lesser vampires to shiver and recoil. Sigh, I better get used to my powers faster. With a wave of my hand, they all left my quarters and I looked at my reflection. Pitch black hair that was grey at the roots and was shoulder length, a slim and skinny body that had bones poking out and a pair of odd sunken eyes. I sighed heavily, missing my old body. “Sigh, I had better recover faster. After all, all brides love to have their husbands to be dashing and handsome.” I thought as I started making plans for my future bride. Whether she was a snobby noble or a humble commoner, she was mine and that was all that mattered. “A new bed is needed and the castle needs more color. Don’t want to scare her away, now do we?” I said to no one in particular as I felt my demon stir. Unlike werewolves, we couldn’t to speak to our demons freely unless one was very strong and at the peak of their strength. Since I had been in a deep sleep for so long, I was still weak and couldn’t talk to Damien, my demon. ‘At least I can feel him.’ I think as feel him stir again. This time though, he was uneasy. I wonder why. *** A few hours had passed and Damien was still restless. Not knowing what to do, I decided to walk around the castle and I was somehow led to the marsh. A marsh that I didn’t even know had existed up until now. ‘Why would Damien lead me here?’ I ask myself as I kept on moving forward. A sweet scent hits me and before I know it, I am bolting in its direction. “What’s wrong, Damien?” I say out loud as if trying to look for answers knowing no one would give them to me. As I dash to the source, the smell gets stronger and stronger but not because the owner was close but because they were hurt. This realization made Damien rear his head and it took quite a while to have him settle. ‘Calm down, Damien. I got this.’ I tell him which calms him a bit and I increase to full speed. “No, no, no… please! Don’t do this!” I hear a female voice plead making me skid to a stop. I sniff the air and catch the scent of two lesser vampires and one middle class one. But why are they harassing a girl, a human at that? I approach the center of commotion and I am appalled at the sight. Fabric was strewn all over the place and it took only my sheer will to not pummel the idiots there and then. “What are you doing?” I ask, my voice a few notes deeper. The vampires look rather shocked at my presence while the girl whose voice I had heard earlier is nowhere in sight. ‘They couldn’t have dealt away with her, right?’ I thought as I approach the vampires who seem to be in a state of confusion as they look around and I find that something is very wrong. “I asked what you were doing here. An answer is in order; don’t you think?” I added at the brink of my patience. “And what’s it to ya? You had better scurry along oldie, before we beat the crap out of you.” Answered one of the lesser vampires as he released his aura and I couldn’t be any more shocked than when I first woke up. A lesser vampire is trying to overpower me with his measly aura? What a bluff! “Shawn, Chris, can you come to the marshes pronto?” I send a message telepathically to my left and right hand men before releasing my aura. Almost immediately, the three vampires drop to their knees while groaning in pain. “Now, now. It’s a little too soon for you to be crying out. You have a lot of answering to do. Don’t you know it’s against the truce agreement?” I said with anger welling up in me. What’s with these lesser idiots and not following the laws? I wonder where the human girl is. As I wait for Shawn and Chris, I look at the three shivering vampires and I can’t help but feel that they are pathetic. “Thousands of years of evolution and now this, pathetic!” I said to them and just then, Shawn and Chris arrive. “Chris, what has been going on of recent that even low level vampires like these ones dare to break the law?” I ask Chris as I settle on a rock. The two visibly shiver and just like I guessed, vampires have been running amok since no one could keep them in check. “These three almost harassed a human girl but I arrived when the girl was nowhere to be seen and these three looked petrified. Find out what happened here and give me a report. I am going back to the castle.” I order as I get up to return. “Hey Skeleton, we work for Lord Nephron, the strongest vampire in the lands. That’s right. If anything happens to us, you are going to be in big trouble.” Said the midlevel vampire and now I was angry. “Nephron, you said. Shawn, who is that?” I ask, looking for validation and praying that it’s not who I think it is. “Lord Nephron is a high ranking vampire who is a pure blood and also likes to buy humans as slaves.” Shawn said and the night descends into a deeper silence with only the night creatures making sound. This guy was the biggest pain in my butt before I went into a deep sleep and even now he is still a problem. Nephron was one of the contenders for the positon of grand duke but I beat him to it hence he holds a grudge against me. To make it all worse, I went into a deep sleep before I could teach him a lesson! “Oh, you work for that Nephron? Interesting!” I said as I lunged for the two. Seems like I need to get stronger faster.
