STORY ONE: MISS DOTTIE.
Donnatella George had just turned 38. She was everything society told women not to be, and yet, she lived unapologetically. She was unmarried, a little curvier than the magazines liked to show, and, as she often joked, “broke as a doornail.” Her three children were grown and out of the house — all from different fathers, none of whom were around anymore. One had remarried and joined the military. Another had passed from illness. The third — the one she once believed was her soulmate — had vanished without a goodbye. Since then, Donnatella had built her life around routine and resilience. Her closest companions were her three best friends and her older sister, all of whom were either divorced or widowed. Love, she thought, had long since left the building. And that was fine. She was a working woman now — no time for fairytales. Each morning was the same: she’d brush out her thick dark hair, slide on her signature red glasses, curl her lashes, and step into one of her favorite dresses. Today, however, wasn’t just any day. Today was her birthday. “Thirty-eight,” she murmured at the mirror, then let out a low sigh. “Two more years ‘til forty. Jeez." Still, she managed a smile. Her friends had planned a night out at L.T. Margaritas — her favorite local spot — and if there was one thing Donnatella could count on, it was a strong margarita and stronger laughter. But first — work. She tugged on her favorite blue dress, spritzed her wrist with vanilla perfume, and headed out to her job at Pattinson’s Corp — Florida’s top-tier wedding dress franchise. She worked at the headquarters, no less. Ironically, the very thing she used to dream about — love, marriage, and the perfect gown — had now become little more than a paycheck. Designing wedding dresses had once made her heart flutter. Now, it reminded her of everything she’d never had. Still, she showed up. She always did. Clocking in was the same as every day. The office buzzed with brides-to-be and deadlines. Nothing was out of the ordinary. Except… him. Her boss. He wasn’t new — she’d seen him around, of course. But today, something felt different. Maybe it was the way he looked at her. Or the way his voice, calm and steady, somehow softened when he spoke her name. Maybe — just maybe — life still had a few surprises left. Reggie Willis had been the head of Pattinson’s for almost nine years — and he carried that title with the kind of grace few men could manage. Tall, sharply dressed, with smooth dark skin, a clean buzz cut, a single earring, and square glasses that gave him a quiet intensity — he was the picture of control and confidence. Married, with two teenagers still in high school, he was also known as a family man. Everyone respected him. And Donnatella… well, she admired him. Maybe more than she wanted to admit. He always remembered her birthday. He always remembered her name. “Miss Dottie,” he greeted her that morning with his usual warm smile. “Happy Birthday! Don’t think I forgot. How are you feeling today?” She smiled, grateful. “Same old. Just trying to survive another year.” Reggie chuckled. “Well, don’t work too hard. But speaking of that — I need these files from this hard drive extracted by noon. You remember how to do that?” “I do,” she replied confidently. “Good,” he said, handing it over. She got right to it. Most of the files were routine — design drafts, invoices, sketches, client feedback. By 11 a.m., she was almost done when she noticed a stray file labeled simply: “Unknown_File_07.” Curious, she opened it. A photo appeared. She gasped and slammed the laptop shut almost instantly. Her heart pounded. She couldn’t believe what she’d seen. Her breath caught in her throat, her mind racing. Why was that on a company drive? Why was he in it? Reggie. She took the laptop and hurried out to her car during her lunch break. She had to clear her head. Had to think. The image — it had been him. Vulnerable. Private. She couldn’t understand how it ended up on this drive. It must’ve been a mistake. An accident. A personal photo that somehow slipped through the cracks. She sat in her parked car, stunned. Torn between disbelief and something else she couldn’t name. A part of her wanted to delete it immediately — protect him. The other part… wondered what it meant. Wondered if it meant anything at all. She stared at the laptop, then shut it completely and exhaled, heart still fluttering. “Get it together, Don,” she whispered. She deleted the file and returned to the office, flustered but composed. She washed her hands, reapplied her lipstick, and slipped back into her chair just as everyone else returned from lunch. Everyone… except Reggie. --- He saw her rush back into the office and immediately noticed something was off. “Hey, are you alright?” Reggie asked gently. “Of course,” Donna said, forcing a smile. “I just had to rush to the car real quick.” “Alrighty. Did you at least finish with the files?” He raised an eyebrow. Donna’s heart skipped a beat — she’d completely forgotten. Usually, she never missed a beat. The look on her face said it all. Reggie chuckled softly. “It’s okay, Miss Dottie. You can finish them tomorrow. After all, it is your birthday. I’ll let it slide.” --- From that moment, the rest of the day went by as usual — but for Donna, that moment lingered in her mind. She tried to push it aside. She had to. Tonight, she was meeting her girlfriends at L.T. Margaritas. As soon as she got home, Donna slipped into her party dress. Another blue one, of course. She added her best earrings, the birthday sash, hat, and brooch her sister Gloria had gifted her the day before. A quick spritz of perfume, a careful cleaning of her red glasses, and she was ready. Driving to L.T., her thoughts drifted back to that file. She wanted to hate herself for not deleting the photo right away. But she couldn’t deny how striking the image had been — Reggie, relaxed and smiling, so unexpectedly vulnerable. She wondered why it was even there in the first place. But maybe… some questions weren’t meant to be answered just yet. When she arrived, Cheyenne, Tracy, and LaShia were already waiting, along with her sister Gloria. They hugged and showered her with gifts before making their way into the crowded bar. “Four LT specials, please!” Tracy shouted, and the group laughed and caught up, letting the night wash over them. Suddenly, a familiar voice interrupted her thoughts. “Reggie?!” Donna turned to see him standing behind her. “Oh, girls, this is my boss from Pattinson’s,” she said, a little breathless. Her friends greeted him with excitement. “What are you doing here?” Donna asked. “Well, me and the boys usually come here on Fridays to play pool and catch the game. I guess you’re here for your special day?” he said with a knowing smile. “Yeah, me and my girlfriends have been coming here since community college. It’s our favorite spot.” “Same here,” he said with a grin. Donna felt her cheeks warm but then remembered to ask, “Hey, where’s Melissa?” Melissa was his wife, after all. “Yeah, about that…” Reggie looked down for a moment. “Melissa and I split a couple of months ago. Turns out she had an old thing with a friend from high school I didn’t know about.” Donna was shocked. She never would’ve guessed they’d split. Her friends gasped collectively. “Nono, it’s okay,” Reggie quickly added. “The divorce is being finalized this week. That’s why me and the boys are here — celebrating.” He looked at Donna thoughtfully. “How about you come join us?” “Oh no, I don’t know…” Donna hesitated. “I understand. I don’t want to ruin your special day.” Just then, Gloria jumped in. “Yeah, we’ll join you guys!” Donna blinked in surprise. “WHAT?!” “I’m her sister — I can vouch for her,” Gloria said, grinning. “Nice to meet you, by the way.” Before Donna could protest, Gloria tugged her toward the pool table. Her friends followed close behind. As Donna approached, Gloria leaned in with a smirk. “Glo—” “Oh, shut up. We all knew you liked him from the jump. Even I could tell. Plus, he’s hot as hell. So, I kinda did you a favor. Happy birthday, sis.” Little did Donna know, Gloria was absolutely right. ----------- The night flowed on — pool games, laughter, and the clinking of glasses. Donna couldn’t believe she was spending her 38th birthday with Reggie, surrounded by friends, warmth, and music. For a moment, it felt like a dream. As the clock edged past 2 a.m., the group’s energy started to wane. Donna’s friends were tipsy, giggling and swaying, and Reggie’s crew wasn’t far behind. But Donna and Reggie themselves stayed just lightly buzzed, enjoying the moment without losing their clarity. Cheyenne leaned in, slurring a little, “I know it’s Christmas, but I think it’s time to call it a night.” Donna laughed softly. “It’s my birthday, Chey.” “Ohhhh, right…” Cheyenne trailed off, nodding sleepily. “I think that’s my cue to go,” Donna said. “Same here,” Reggie agreed, standing up. Gloria tugged Donna aside. “I got your friends. You just go.” Donna glanced back at Reggie, who smiled knowingly and folded his arms. Gloria rounded up the girls and helped them into cars, while Donna and Reggie did the same with his friends. After the goodbyes and the final wave, they found themselves alone, the hum of the city wrapping around them. “I know you saw the file, Donna,” Reggie said quietly. Donna’s breath caught. She looked at him, cheeks flushed. “It’s okay,” he added quickly. “That was just something I sent to an old fling a while back. Embarrassing, really. I forgot to delete it. But… in a way, I’m glad you were the one who saw it.” Her heart fluttered as he stepped closer. Gently, he lifted her birthday hat and brushed a stray curl from her face. Then, without warning, he leaned down and kissed her. At first, Donna hesitated, caught off guard — but then she met his lips again, the kiss deepening, warm and electric. He whispered against her mouth, “There’s a hotel just up the road…” Donna’s eyes sparkled. “Then why are we just standing here?” They shared a smile before hailing a cab and heading inside. ---------------- Once inside the room, their lips met in a slow, hungry kiss, tongues intertwining in a sensual dance. Reggie’s hands slid over Donna’s curves, lingering as he gently cupped her breasts. A soft sigh escaped her lips as she melted into his touch. With deliberate care, Donna peeled away her birthday dress, letting it slip to the floor, then slowly eased down her panties. Reggie lifted her effortlessly, carrying her to the bed with a steady strength, then laid her down gently. His voice was low, edged with desire. “You’ve dreamed about this, haven’t you, Dottie?” Without a word, Donna reached for the buttons of his pants, undoing them slowly as her eyes never left his. When his boxers dropped away, the sight of him took her breath away—strong, dark, and proud. She pressed a soft kiss to him, looking up through thick lashes, her heart pounding. Reggie grinned, peeling off his shirt to bare his chest, his hands now bold and confident. “Show me what you want, baby,” he murmured. Donna didn’t hesitate. She took him into her mouth, warm and slow at first, savoring every inch. She felt every pulse, every vein beneath her lips, moving with care and growing passion. Reggie’s soft groans urged her on, his breath catching with every motion. She deepened her rhythm, taking him further, holding him just at the edge and then releasing him, over and over. Her hands joined the dance—stroking, caressing, worshipping him as if he were the only thing that mattered. Reggie’s fingers tangled in her hair, pulling her closer. “That’s it, Dottie,” he whispered, voice thick with longing. “Just like that. Stroke it” Her movements grew faster, more eager, driven by desire. She loved the feel of him—warm, alive, needing her. Her hands explored boldly, cupping and teasing, every touch met with soft gasps from him. She gave herself fully to the moment, lost in the sensation. As she looked up at him, she thought, After all these years, this is really happening. She had finally gotten what she wanted—the closeness, the connection, the heat between them. Then, with a shudder, Reggie’s breath hitched, and the tension broke in a wave of release. Donna leaned back, letting it wash over her, feeling utterly alive. “Happy birthday, Miss Dottie,” Reggie said softly, his voice full of affection and awe. Knowing that was only the beginning.
