Chapter 3

"Three years ago, we were separated by a misunderstanding. I never thought this rescue would bring us back together, Sophia. I don't want to leave any regrets in my life. This time, I won't let go of your hand!"  Sophia excitedly covered her mouth. Although she didn't say anything, her expectant expression said it all. The taut string in my mind completely snapped, and my heart was in turmoil. I wished I could smash the TV. The loving image of the two was frozen on the screen, and the nurse beside me sighed. "What a touching love."  I felt sick and closed my eyes in pain. We had been together for three years, and in this relationship, I was always the one who gave the most. She was a picky eater, so I learned to cook for her, personally cooking every meal. When she said she couldn't sleep, I immediately gave up my interview and drove five hours from another city just to bring her a cup of hot milk. I knew she had been in touch with James, but I never stopped her. Just because she said, I was her present and future, James, this first love, no matter how beautiful, was already a thing of the past. She also promised that we would get married by the end of this year. I was so naive to think that she only loved me. The pain spread throughout my body as if I had been subjected to a thousand cuts. I even felt a fishy sweetness in my throat. The nurse left after changing my dressing. I curled up in bed, full of pain and unwillingness. The pain in my right hand was far less than the pain in my heart. Why should I suffer all this? At this time, I heard the sound of the door opening behind me. "Benjamin," Henry hurried in, his expression worried as he looked me over. "I heard you were injured. How are you now?"  I was taken aback and then seemed to see a glimmer of hope. My teacher was a world-renowned medical expert, and my right hand might still be saved. But before I could speak, he said sternly, "I'm here today to inform you that you've been fired from the hospital."  These words hit me like a bolt from the blue. I didn't recover for a long time. "Why?"  "How dare you ask that? First of all, not to mention that this morning's surgery was related to your promotion, as a doctor, you completely ignored the safety of the patient and ran away without a word. Count for yourself, how many times have you done this for Sophia? Now don't you even care about your career now? Now the hospital is full of rumors, and even the patient's family is making a fuss. Sometimes I question if you are a qualified doctor!"  It was only then that I remembered that I had received a call from Sophia yesterday just after my surgery. She cried to me for help, unable to speak clearly. I thought she was in danger, so I ignored everything and rushed over in a hurry. But before I left, I clearly greeted the nurse on duty and asked her to change the surgeon. Looking at Henry's disappointed expression, I wanted to explain, but I couldn't say anything. What was the use of pursuing it now? Endless regret enveloped me. Benjamin, you really deserved it! Henry's eyes were full of disappointment, he sighed and instructed, "Take a good rest and recover from your injury these days."  Mentioning the injury, I cheered up a little and put all my hope on Henry. "The doctor said that my hand might be useless in the future. You are well informed. Is there any way?"  He flipped through the medical records with a complicated expression. "How did you get such a serious injury? I'm afraid that the current medical standards in America... Well, I'll go back and think of a solution."  After Henry left, I slumped on the hospital bed like a deflated rubber ball. I want to cry but have no tears. For Sophia, I gave up my future and even my hand. But what did I get in return? The scene in front of the TV was deeply engraved in my mind and lingered. I was imprisoned, but she was sweetly making up for her regrets with James. I really regretted it. I regretted the wholehearted devotion I had given for the past three years and regretted rushing to her regardless of the consequences. At this time, Sophia walked in from outside.
