Chapter 4

673 Words
"Benjamin, are you alright?" She asked casually as if making small talk. The turmoil I had just managed to quell surged back up within me. I squeezed my eyes shut and turned away, afraid that if I looked at her, I wouldn't be able to control the urge to strangle her. She stepped forward and shoved me, starting to complain, "What's wrong with you? Do you know how many times I called you? You didn't answer a single one! If I didn’t ask around everywhere to find your ward, do you know what would have happened to you?"  Faced with her barrage of complaints, I couldn't hold back any longer. I shot her an icy look. "Don't you know why didn't I answer the phone?"  Twenty-some calls, all unanswered. I had nearly choked to death waiting for rescue. And now, she had the gall to ask me why I didn't answer the phone. Was she for real? Sophia's expression shifted, and she pursed her lips, looking a little guilty. "I was too busy to get someone to rescue you at that time. But you're fine, aren't you?" I scoffed. "Busy? Busy being on TV, you mean."  As soon as the words left my mouth, I froze, my entire body struck dumb as if by lightning. What? Did she forget to get someone to rescue me? So the rescue workers... weren't sent by her at all? I gasped for breath and clutched the edge of the bed, feeling a wave of dizziness wash over me. The person beside me was completely oblivious to my distress. Her eyes shone with adoration as she continued to gush about James's heroic deeds. "You don’t know that James was the hero of the rescue this time. If he didn’t understand the building's structure, it would take so much longer. There are so many families outside who want to give him banners to thank him."  The more she talked, the more excited she became, a sweet smile gracing her lips. I trembled with rage, veins bulging in my arms. I practically roared, "You like James that much, don't you? Fine! Let's break up! I'll let the two of you be together!"  Sophia froze, her face a mask of astonishment, and then she frowned deeply. "Benjamin, are you crazy?"  I was furious. With all my strength, I raised my right hand in front of her. "James is so great, so I deserve to have my career buried, is that it? To save your loverboy, I won't be able to pick up a scalpel for the rest of my life. Are you satisfied?" The more I spoke, the more my eyes burned. I had told her that I wanted to become the most renowned cardiac surgeon in the country. I wanted to inherit my late grandfather's mantle, to contribute to the nation's medical field. I had always been working towards that goal, just one step away from achieving my dream. But now, everything was ruined. I had even ridiculously thought that she was my savior, foolishly thinking I would protect her for the rest of my life. Sophia carefully took my hand, her eyes filled with heartache. "Then just don't be a doctor anymore. It's fine; my family is rich. After we get married, I'll take care of you for the rest of your life." Her attempt at sounding carefree disgusted me. She didn't understand my beliefs at all, nor did she show any remorse. With a flippant "it's fine," she dismissed years of my hard work and dedication. Watching her excitedly plan out my life as a kept man, I slapped her hard across the face and roared, "Get out! Get out of my sight!"  She stumbled back, clutching her face in disbelief, seemingly not expecting me to hit her. That was right. Before, I couldn't bear to even speak harshly to her, treating her like a delicate flower. But now, she was the executioner who had single-handedly destroyed the rest of my life. What mercy did I owe her?
