The gallery hummed with quiet excitement as visitors roamed from painting to painting, murmuring their thoughts to one another. I stood near the back, watching their reactions as my heart swelled with a strange mixture of pride and vulnerability. My latest piece—a swirling composition of golds and reds titled Foundations—was hung in the centerpiece position.
The art had become a sanctuary, a safe place where emotions could spill freely without fear of judgment. But even with the crowd’s admiration, a small voice in the back of my mind whispered: What would Adrian think?
That thought alone irritated me. I didn’t want my work—or my worth—to revolve around him. Yet, as much as I tried to dismiss it, his opinion mattered.
