Chapter 1
Kahlan My heart raced as I approached the boundary of the Luigi pack's territory, the place I had once called home. I had last been here some 5 months ago, and the memories of rejection and humiliation still haunted me. But now I had no choice; I was pregnant, alone, and vulnerable. Two imposing wolves, guards I didn't recognize, emerged from the shadows. They blocked my path, their eyes filled with suspicion and hostility. "Halt! Who goes there?" The first guard hollered. "What's your business here?" The second one chimed in. I took a deep breath, trying to steady my trembling voice. "I... I'm Kahlan. I used to be a member of this pack." "Kahlan?" The first guard sneered. "The Alpha's supposed "mate" who couldn't shift properly?" "What's she doing back here?" The second guard cut in, scoffing. Their words cut deep, but I cannot afford to show weakness. "I've come back to seek refuge and protection. I have nowhere else to go." I watched the guards exchange glances, clearly torn between their duty and the unexpected return of an outcast. After a brief, silent conversation, they reluctantly turned and led me deeper into space, where the scent of the pack and the looming presence of Sheldon, the Alpha, grew stronger. As we approached Sheldon's den, my heart pounded with dread. I knew that facing him would be a painful ordeal. Sheldon had once rejected me, scorned me, chose another as his mate. His cruelty still haunts my dreams. The guards pushed me forward, and I entered Sheldon's den, the place where I had been humiliated and cast aside. Sheldon was there, his gaze cold and disdainful as he regarded me. "Well, well, well," Sheldon started. "Look who's back. Kahlan the useless." I lowered my head, unable to meet his piercing gaze. "Sheldon, I... I have no choice. I'm in a desperate situation." "Desperate, you say? What could possibly be more desperate than being mated to someone like you?" His words were like a dagger to my heart, and I fought back tears. "I'm pregnant, Sheldon. I have nowhere else to go. Please, I beg you, let me back into the pack." Sheldon let out a mocking laugh, his eyes filled with cruel amusement. "Pregnant, you say? For someone who was supposed to be my mate? I've always doubted the abilities of the Moon Goddess, and I feel you're a prime example. I always knew you'd end up this way," he said, rising. "You know how much I'd love to watch you humiliated, frustrated, and broken," he bellowed into my face. I cowered in fear. "But of course not. You are my "Fated mate", so I can't cast you out. Very well, Kahlan, you can stay. But remember…," he stressed, "You're nothing but the same worthless wolf you were before." I didn't know how to feel. The world had always been cruel to me, and Sheldon was just a mere part of it. I can't blame it on him. Relief washed over me because, at least for now, I had a chance to protect myself and my unborn child. Fate had always been playing cruel tricks on me. I still feel pain remembering how I got to this point. Five months earlier Kahlan The center of the pack's space is bathed in ethereal moonlight this evening. It's a serene clearing surrounded by towering trees. The atmosphere is thick with anticipation as every member of the Luigi pack who is able has gathered. It is a rare and sacred event — the time when the Alpha chooses his mate, guided by the will of the Moon Goddess. I stood there among the crowd. My emotions were a mix of stress, exhaustion, and anxiety. I have always been an outcast in the pack. My parents are dead, and I'm unable to shift into a complete wolf like the others. If only I could just… If only the moon goddess could just… Jeez. What the hell am I thinking? "Stop it, Kahlan. Stop it," I told myself. Triss, the trusted servant of the Moon Goddess, took her place at the center of the clearing. She was arguably to most feared woman of all the pack. Her eyes were closed in deep meditation. She is the link between our pack and the divine, the one who would convey the Moon Goddess's choice. "We gather here tonight to witness the sacred union chosen by the Moon Goddess herself," Triss sang out. "Alpha Sheldon, the time has come for you to select your mate guided by the will of the Moon Goddess. Please step forward." Sheldon is tall and imposing, with piercing blue eyes and a demeanor that exudes power. He gingerly stepped to the forefront of the crowd. He is well known for his arrogance and cruelty, and the thought of anyone being his mate filled me with terror. That's just me overreacting. "I am ready, Triss," Sheldon said solemnly. Triss began the rite. "Dearest Moon Goddess, we your servants and members of this pack humbly beseech you to reveal your chosen one." The air seemed to still, and the moon's light intensified as if in response to Triss's invocation. Then a soft, ethereal voice that echoed through the clearing. It was Triss. She had entered into a trance. "The one I have chosen as the mate of Alpha Sheldon is among you. Kahlan Luigi, step forward." My heart skipped a beat, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still. Me? The Moon Goddess has chosen me? It was beyond my wildest dreams. "Step forward, child," Triss beckoned. I stepped forward, my heart pounding with a mixture of excitement and fear. I couldn't help but steal a glance at Sheldon. I was remotely hoping to see some glimmer of acceptance or even a hint of kindness. But what I saw in his eyes floored me. "Her?" Sheldon laughed derisively. "You must be joking, Triss." When Triss did not flinch, he continued more rapidly. "Come on! Kahlan is a disgrace to our pack. She is unable to shift, she has no family… she is unworthy of being my mate." I could swear those words had scattered my very soul. At that moment, I felt the eyes of the entire pack upon me. Tris's expression was pained and she tried to intervene. "Sheldon, the choice of the Moon Goddess is sacred and not to be questioned." Sheldon's disdain remained unabated. After looking at me for what seemed like forever, he turned away from me, his gaze filled with disgust. The fickle joy I had felt moments ago turned to bitter disappointment. That was where my problems had all begun. The chittering nightlife brought me back to the present. The memory of that painful night will probably haunt me forever. I was feeling cold, and although Sheldon has accepted me back into the pack, I have nowhere to sleep tonight. So the more pressing thought right now was: "Where will I spend the night?" That was the last thought that went through my mind before…
