Caught Between Empires

The forest road fell silent. Amanda could hear nothing except the low hum of engines and the pounding of her own heart. The black vehicles blocked the entire road. Their headlights cut through the darkness like blades. And standing in front of them… Victor Chain. Amanda’s fingers tightened around Ben’s sleeve. “Ben…” Her voice barely came out. Victor smiled slowly as he walked forward. “Good evening.” Marcus immediately raised his weapon. “Stop right there.” Victor didn’t even glance at the gun. Instead, his eyes remained fixed on Ben. “You made it farther than I expected.” Ben’s jaw tightened. “Move your men.” Victor chuckled softly. “You’re giving me orders now?” The Chain soldiers shifted slightly, surrounding the road. Marcus whispered to Amanda. “Stay behind me.” Amanda nodded, though fear twisted in her stomach. Victor’s gaze finally moved to her. “So this is Amanda Stone.” His voice carried an unsettling calm. “The girl who made two empires start bleeding.” Amanda swallowed. “We didn’t start anything.” Victor tilted his head. “Didn’t you?” Before Amanda could answer, Marcus stepped forward. “We’re leaving. Now.” Victor sighed. “You Stone men are so impatient.” Then he raised his hand slightly. Instantly, the Chain soldiers lifted their weapons. Marcus and the Stone guards did the same. In seconds, the quiet road turned into a standoff. One wrong move… And the entire place would explode into gunfire. Amanda’s chest tightened. “Please stop,” she whispered. No one listened. Victor took another step closer. His attention returned to Ben. “You’ve caused quite a scene tonight.” Ben’s eyes were cold. “Let us pass.” Victor studied him carefully. “Tell me something, Benjamin.” The way he said Ben’s full name made Amanda’s stomach twist. “When exactly were you planning to tell her?” Amanda frowned. “Tell me what?” Ben didn’t answer. Victor smiled wider. “Oh… so you haven’t yet.” Amanda turned toward Ben. “What is he talking about?” Ben looked at her. For a moment, something strange flashed across his face. Guilt? No… Something else. Victor clasped his hands behind his back. “I suppose I shouldn’t ruin the surprise.” Amanda’s pulse raced. “Ben?” He still didn’t answer. Victor finally sighed. “Very well.” He looked toward his men. “Stand down.” The soldiers hesitated. Marcus frowned. “What game are you playing?” Victor ignored him. Instead, he looked directly at Ben again. “You may leave.” The words stunned everyone. Marcus blinked. “You’re letting us go?” Victor smiled faintly. “I said him.” Amanda felt the ground drop beneath her feet. “What?” Victor’s gaze shifted to her. “You, Miss Stone…” His voice hardened slightly. “Are coming with me.” Marcus raised his weapon instantly. “Not happening.” The Chain soldiers raised theirs again. Ben suddenly stepped forward. “Stop.” Both sides froze. Amanda looked at him in confusion. “Ben, what are you doing?” He didn’t look at her. Instead, he faced Victor. “You said you’d stay out of it.” Victor laughed. “I said I’d give you time.” Amanda’s heart pounded faster. “Time for what?” Still no answer. Marcus whispered urgently. “We need to move now.” But before anyone could react— A gunshot exploded. Marcus staggered backward. Amanda screamed. “Marcus!” He collapsed to the ground. The shot had come from the Chain side. Instant chaos erupted. Stone guards fired. Chain soldiers returned fire. Bullets tore through the night. Amanda dropped to her knees beside Marcus. “Stay with me!” But Marcus wasn’t moving. Ben grabbed Amanda’s arm. “We have to go!” Before they could run— Another group of vehicles roared onto the road from behind. Stone reinforcements. Armed men poured out. Now both armies surrounded the forest road. The war had officially begun. Victor shook his head slowly. “Well… that escalated.” Then something shocking happened. Victor looked straight at Ben. And spoke calmly. “Your move.” Amanda froze. Her heart skipped. “Your… move?” She slowly turned toward Ben. For the first time since they met… Ben looked completely different. Not scared. Not desperate. Not even surprised. He looked… calm. Amanda’s voice trembled. “Ben… what is he talking about?” Ben finally looked at her. His expression was unreadable. Then Victor spoke again. And the words that left his mouth shattered the world Amanda thought she knew. “Go on, Benjamin.” Victor’s smile widened. “Tell her who you really are.”
