If being in high school wasn't bad enough, keeping your head down just to get the day done and over with can be trying on its own. Home life for Rebecca Wilson wasn’t any better with a mother who is constantly out of the house, made existance lonely. If it wasn’t for her best friend Ryan, she would have lost her marbles long ago, and learning knew things about yourself can almost become mind numbing.

I
I . ALWAYS LIE ABOUT MY DAYS to my mum, she asks as soon as I walk through the door. 'How was your day at school?' Most teenagers would just say fine, but I take it to the extreme of saying it was good, even though I'm lying through my teeth. She never sees that, which is good because school is horrendous. I would be considered the book-worm who is a loner or a nerd or whatever you choose to call them, I'm that. Hair tied up in a bun, glasses always sat on my nose, but minus the spots, however, I do have braces which is just the slightest bit depressing. I don't wear makeup to school because I don't know who I'm trying to impress, my hair is always in a bun so no one can pull on it if they decide to be immature and start something.     And there they are, the trio this school worships coming around the corner towards the lockers, Chrissie, Tiffany and Amanda. The jocks fall over their feet for these three, I don't understand why they are barely that attractive and probably much worse under the surface of that five-inch mask they choose to wear on their faces. But I'm not sure if they have a new follower trying to become a wannabe or if the girl is just new and following the...     Before I could even finish my coherent thought in my head, my books went up into the air only to land onto to the white freckled vinyl flooring. I felt myself purse my lips at the scattered pile of papers that fell out, before looking at the laughing Chrissie, I just let out a sigh and got to picking them up when I hit heads with someone. I mentally said ouch as I rubbed the top of my head before looking at the girl in front of me, who was picking papers up for me.     "Sorry, I'm new..." I didn't catch the rest of what she said. I looked into her grey-blue eyes, her hair a deep brown compared to mine as it cascaded down her shoulders. I couldn't stop myself  from looking at her, the only thing pulling me away from my gaze was when she placed my books and papers into my hands.     I smiled my thank you as I got on my way to the class, praying it ends quickly so I can go home. I walked into the classroom taking my designated seat in the middle of the class, always leaving it interesting to see what people do to me, considering I am a bullseye target sat in the middle of the room. I watched the other people draw into the room, talking amongst one another as I puffed up my cheeks wanting to get this over and done with. Ten minutes into the lesson I received a ball of paper to the back of my head, making me roll my eyes at whoever did it. Still, I kept my head forward trying to pay attention to the lesson.     When class ended, in total I had two paper balls thrown at me, and from what I assume, I was poked and       prodded by someone's pen or pencil. I let the class empty before I got up from my chair making my way towards the door to leave. My feet dragged me down the hallway leading to the student car park. As soon as I made it outside, I felt free from the confined walls of the concrete building we know as, school. I watched the fleeting students get into the prized possessions while I made my way to mine.     I unlocked the door, taking my hair out the bun as it fell in ringlets along my shoulders. A small smile pulling up on my face when I let myself go to how I'm most comfortable after school. In a way I hold two disguises; nerd or book-worm for school, any normal teenager for home life or socialising. And that's how it will always remain. I'd rather the people at school see me as one person, so they won't recognise me when I'm with my friends outside of school.     I left the premises giving it my farewell until tomorrow while I drove home, I turned up the music as I hit the by-pass towards my house. My fingers tapping on the steering wheel to the rhythm of the bass drum in the music, my eyes looked at the scenery as I neared my exit towards the countryside leading me into the middle of nowhere. I followed the winding roads into a cul-de-sac, pulling up at the second house on the left.     I turned the engine off as my door opened revealing my friend Ryan standing there with a smile, making me anxious of what he's planned for the two of us today. I climbed out my car, grabbing my bag on the way out as he shut the door for me when I turned and faced him with a sigh.     "Okay, there is a party tonight. Please say you will come with me, I don't care if it's a school night." He said in a hopeful voice of desperation.     I shook my head 'no' as I walked the path to my front door while I unlocked it, his footsteps matching mine as I let him and myself in leaving him to shut the door while I dropped my bag onto the floor before I turned to face him again.     "Who's is it?" I asked, walking to the kitchen as he followed.     "Now this is the part you will hate, it's Amanda's." I closed my eyes before opening them with a heavy sigh as I shook my head no. "Please, it will be good. She will hardly recognise you." He pointed out as I faced him.     Ryan always got an invite to parties. He's one of them people you don't know personally but everyone knows him to some extent. I guess people would consider him attractive, with his well-groomed hair and the classic Colgate smile you'd expect to see on someone like him.     "No," I said as I grabbed a bottle of water out of the fridge. "And besides, I have a test tomorrow."     "Come on Bec, you're hardly recognisable with your hair down. Put on some makeup and wear your contacts, no one at the party will know it's you." He argued as he heaved himself up onto the kitchen counter, crossing his legs at the ankles. "As for the test, don't get so drunk. But I still stand by what I said, you should dress how you do here for school. It might stop the harassment to some degree," he commented.     "I don't care about the harassment, it doesn't bother me. It's quite amusing actually. And I don't want to doll myself up for them, it's not all about the pretty face." I said taking a drink from the bottle as I leant on the counter.     "You look so different outside of school, though."     "That's my point of doing it. So they won't recognise me outside of school, plus do they deserve this side of me? I don't think so." I said with a small laugh, watching him jump off the counter to stand before me.     "Please, will you go to this party with me, Rebecca Wilson." He begged, using my full name as I rolled my eyes at him.     "Fine, whatever. But you're driving not me." I said making a smile pull up on his face.     "You are the best, I'll pick you up at half-eight." He said, pressing his lips roughly against mine before walking out the kitchen towards the front door.     "Did you really have to kiss me?" I called as he opened the front door.     "Yes, so don't act like you hate it." He called before pulling the door to, leaving me standing there clicking my tongue against the roof of my mouth.     I looked up at the clock seeing it was just after four, giving me some time to do my homework before getting ready. I trudged my way towards the stairs grabbing hold of my bag as I fell onto my hands and knees to crawl up the steps and into my room. I settled on my knees as I pulled my biology book out of the bag, grabbing a pen along the way when I got up from off the floor and onto my bed. - After doing my hair and makeup, I attempted to put my contacts in causing my eyes to water knowing that would happen, glad that I left my mascara until last, otherwise it would be halfway down by face by the time these went in. I received a text from Ryan letting me know that he was outside my house waiting. I quickly applied the mascara and eyeliner, giving myself one more look over before grabbing my phone and walking down the stairs. I opened the door feeling the chill on my exposed skin as I pulled it shut while I walked down the path towards his car, seeing him looking at the house opposite mine. His head snapping my way when I climbed into his car when his eyes looked me over with approval.     "You look hot, I honestly do wonder what they would think of you if you dressed like that at school." His eyes wide as he referred to me in a skirt that showed my legs from my usual skin tight jeans.     "Just drive," I said while I adjusted my skirt after I buckled myself in. His eyes not leaving me until I looked at him with an unamused glare, making him chuckle.     "You know, when you wear contacts you can tell you have heterochromia iridum." He stated, looking at me quickly then back at the road.     "Why didn't you just say two different eye colours?" I asked looking at his face seeing a smile playing on his lips.     "Because I wanted to sound smart. You're not the only smart one in this car you know."     "I'm the one who told you what it's called, i***t," I said back as I looked out the passenger window.     In total, it took us twenty minutes to reach the party, Ryan having to park halfway down the road due to the line of cars parked. I got out the car carefully holding onto one side of my skirt, closing the door so he could lock it up before he came next to me holding his arm out for me to hold and link with. I smiled up at him as he kissed the side of my head, our feet walking towards the house when the music was already loud and clear from halfway down the street. It did make me wonder if the police would come and bust this party and to be honest who even throws a party on a Thursday when Friday is only a day away.     I slid my phone into Ryan's front pocket of his jeans when we neared the house, the nerves making my stomach flip if she found out who I am. Maybe, just maybe a potential fight would break out and I will probably win...well at least I can hope. I slipped my arm out of Ryan's when his hand moved to the small of my back as we entered the house. My eyes looked over my surroundings for the fearsome trio, landing on Chrissie's face as I felt a smirk pull up on my lips.     After about an hour, I felt the alcohol take its full effect on me. I slightly fell into someone as they caught me when I looked up to see Chrissie's boyfriend before me. A smile on his thin pink lips while his blonde hair was in a messy style, I smiled back at him as I pushed away from him gently when I felt someone's hands resting on my hips from behind me, my back leaning against their front not caring who it was or why they were dancing with me. I looked to my right, seeing the new girl at my school standing in the corner awkwardly with a drink in her hand as she looked at the people around her. I moved away from the guy behind me to approach her, a new form of confidence flowing throughout me as I stood in front of her.     "Hi, I'm Rebecca," I smiled her way as I held my hand out for her to shake, the music was starting to make my ears tingle from the loud bass. I watched as she looked down at my hand then at my face.     "Catherine." She smiled back as she took my hand to shake, "aren't you the girl I bumped heads with this morning?" She asked as she looked at me, already blowing my cover.     "You got me, I guess you could tell from behind the glasses and braces," I grinned, not really caring if people recognised me on the off chance. As long as it wasn't the trio, but they would never pay enough attention to notice the difference or resemblance I should say.     "Yeah, the disguise didn't fool me. Why do you dress so different outside of school? Or was that a one-time thing?" She pressed.     "Nope, it wasn't a one-time thing. I always dress like that for school, so people don't recognise me outside of school." I explained making her nod her head thoughtfully, "I guess I'll let you be the exception of that." I added as I grabbed her arm pulling her into the crowd to dance, a smile still on her face.     After a while of dancing and socialising with people I never would talk to in school, I made my way outside seeing Ryan talking to a girl as she flirted with him in an over exaggerated way. I approached him and hugged his waist making him look down at me with a slight frown that i ruined his chances of getting laid, his arm wrapping around my shoulders as the girl walked with a scowl when I waved her goodbye making me laugh.     "Are you drunk?" He asked leading me to his car to take me home after the party was near enough finished.     "Me...No." I slightly slurred making him chuckle lightly.     "I hope you have a terrible hangover tomorrow at school. Next party you're driving and I'm going to be having all the fun." He commented as he helped me into the car seat. - The next morning when I woke my throat was dry with my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth, my brain buzzing from the hangover I was left with while my eyes felt sore as I mentally cursed myself for sleeping with my contacts in. I turned to look behind me at the clock seeing is was just after six in the morning, giving me enough time to take a shower and some aspirin before my normal façade of who I was for school.     After showering and getting dressed it had just gone seven when I walked down the stairs throwing my wet hair up into a bun as I took my glasses from between my teeth, placing them onto the bridge of my nose so I could see clearly. I walked down the hallway and into the kitchen seeing my mother sat at the table with the early morning newspaper and a cup of coffee. She was dressed in her normal attire for work consisting of slacks and a blazer for her very important business role, while I was confused as to the fact that she was actually home and not on some trip like normal if I'm being honest, I forgot that she even lived here.     "Where were you last night?" she asked not looking up from the stock shares in the paper, while I knocked back two aspirins with a sip of my water.     "I was with Ryan, last night." Not completely a lie, but not completely the truth, either way, she nodded her head in contentment which by all means is fine by me.     "I'm off to school then, I want a coffee before I start. I won't be home until seven tonight I have work." I called behind me while I grabbed my bag and car keys leaving the house, letting the door fall closed as I made my way to the car.     I threw my bag into the passenger seat as I climbed into the car, my keys in hand turning the engine on. I rolled down the windows to get some air inside the stuffy car from the sun making me wish it was winter or spring so the inside of the car wouldn't feel like an oven, dreading when summer does come around.     I pulled away from the house as I made my way to the coffee house where I work at, in desperate need of some caffeine in my system, the hangover making me feel sluggish hoping that the coffee will wake me up. If I was to be breathalysed by the police right now, I'm sure I would be over the limit still and technically drunk. So much for safe driving on a Friday morning. I kept the music volume to the minimal of background music to not distract me while I kept to the speed limit, the muscles in my head literally thumping against my skull, clearly, the aspirins still hadn't kicked in. Hopefully coffee could be the cure.     I pulled up outside my work, leaving the cars engine running as I got out walking around the front to go into the building.     "Morning, Bec. You look like hell." Jen commented on my appearance while I walked past a couple standing near the entrance, "do you want the usual?" she asked, getting a takeout cup ready.                                                                                           "Yes, please." I smiled towards her as I slide the exact change across the counter while she fixed up my drink, "are you working all day today?"     "Yeah, you're working tonight aren't you?" she replied, placing the lid on top of the cup when she passed it to me as she processed my order into the cash register.     "Yep, glad you're on tonight instead of Brett," I retorted, leaning on the counter with her doing the same opposite me.     "He does get annoying sometimes, but you know how all adolescent teenage boys get. They are all angsty at that age." She explained, "so, why do you look ruffled today?"     "I went to a party last night and drank a little too much," I told her, regretting listening to Ryan.     "Was it good? I bet you didn't look like that." She laughed slightly.     "Yeah it was good, just wish it wasn't on a school day. Anyway, I best get going I have a test." I said standing up straight taking my coffee off the counter.     "Okay, see you later. And my money is going on that you ace the test." She smiled as I waved goodbye to her.     I climbed back into the car, placing the cup into the holder while I started to drive towards school. I took slow sips on my coffee trying not to burn my mouth.      I arrived at school by half seven, the car lot nearly half full with people walking in through the double doors. I parked up the car when I climbed out  with a stretch before reaching back in for my bag and coffee, kicking the door shut and slinging my bag over my shoulder.     My feet slowly made their way towards the building still trying to get my brain to function properly for the test, when one of the three stooges slapped the coffee out of my hand and onto the floor. I gritted my teeth together while I stared down at the brown liquid as I looked over to see Catherine looking my way with pity written across her face.     "Well, that was a waste of two-seventy," I spoke sarcastically, leaving the litter on the floor while I made my way to class in the worst mood possible.     Let's just get today over with.
