Chapter 1
Gery's face began to show impatience. "You finally behaved for a few days, and now you're starting up again?"
He reined in his tone, forcing himself to be patient. "Your grandmother was transferred to a regular ward, and the special medication was put on hold—that was my decision. Daicy had nothing to do with it. She was just carrying out my orders. She's highly capable. She'll be a great asset to me."
My heart felt like it had been filled with icy wind. Three sentences, and two of them were about Daicy. When I still didn't react, he added, "If you hadn't gone to the headquarters front desk and caused a scene, I wouldn't have cut off your grandmother's medication. I've already signed the approval to resume it today. What more do you want?"
I listened to his so-called explanations. I knew this was the last of Gery's patience. In the past, even a half-hearted excuse from him would have made me grateful.
But I was truly exhausted. "Gery, let's end this. You'll find a better, more suitable Luna."
Gery stared at me, then suddenly laughed. "Lupa, do you even know what you're saying? Without me, with your background, what can you possibly do?"
He was right. Over the years, I'd given up my studies and my career just to become his Luna. Four years, and I was still just his fiancée, never officially his Luna. Everyone called me "The waiting Lupa" behind my back.
"My time is valuable. I don't have time to indulge your little tantrums." With that, he turned and walked out.
Through the door, I saw Daicy's figure outside. It was always like this.
Whenever I showed any emotion, he'd slam the door and leave. Leaving me to deal with it on my own.
He was certain I'd find a way to rationalize it all and smooth things over myself. Soon enough, I'd come crawling back to him, shamelessly trying to please him. Because I needed the special medication developed by the Thorn Pack.
But now, whether I had that medication or not no longer mattered. If this had been a week ago, even if Gery had wanted to exile me, I'd have accepted it willingly and groveled for his favor.
But he wouldn't even see me. As his fiancée, I couldn't even set foot in the Thorn Pack headquarters.
For years, my grandmother had suffered from a rare strain of wolf toxin, kept alive only by that special medication.
Four days ago, her medication didn't arrive on time. She was barely hanging on by a thread. The pack doctors were helpless. Without approval, they had no authority to obtain the drug.
I had no choice but to rush to the Thorn Pack headquarters, desperate to beg Gery to sign off. But the front desk stopped me. The reason for Daicy had set a rule—no entry without a prior appointment.
No one knew how many times I'd called Gery that morning. Finally, the call went through. But the voice on the other end was Daicy's. Before I could even say a word, Daicy spoke, her tone full of grievance. "Please don't yell at me, Lupa. I know I was wrong. I was just following procedure."
The next second, Gery snatched the phone away. "How many times have I told you—learn to wait? Can't you even do that? Daicy did nothing wrong. You have no right to yell at her."
Daicy's sobs came through from the other end. "Don't blame her, Gery. I didn't mean anything by it. I just don't want her to carry those bad habits from the lower packs. I'm only doing this to ensure our future Luna meets the highest standards. That way she'll learn her lesson and develop better habits."
Hearing that, Gery's tone turned even colder. His voice was full of impatience. "Are you done yet? Do you know how busy I am?"
"When will you ever learn to share my burdens, like Daicy does? Don't come bothering me for every little thing from now on. If you need something, go through Daicy. If Daicy says wait, you wait. If she says follow the process, you follow the process."
I never even got a word in. The line went dead with a click.
