The days went by too fast and before she knew it, they stood outside the Misty Hill Asylum. Kelso and Brent stood to the side near Veda and her group of airheads. Mr. Lewis stood in front of the doors, facing them all. “Good morning, everyone; I’m glad to see you’ve all made it. Now, you will be in the asylum for the whole holidays; cleaning, painting and fixing. Food and beverages will be provided.” Veda frowned, “Will we be able to keep our phones?” “Mr. Smith is the supervisor, and he will be the only one with a phone.” Kane’s eyes fell to Mr. Smith; Mr. Lewis had sworn he could be trusted to keep everyone safe. Kane wondered how he would keep them safe; he was a light-haired man in his late thirties, with a very skinny build. They handed their phones to Mr. Lewis and followed Smith into the asylum. Kane and Moth were the last to enter, and as the doors closed behind them, she had the feeling of dread in her stomach. The hairs on the back of her neck rose and her blood ran cold as ice. Let the fun begin Suddenly, she just knew that not everyone would make it out alive. Smith turned to them, pulling her from her thoughts, “First of all, call me Zack.” Kane frowned, she wasn’t taking interest in anyone at this point; she studied the asylum. The walls were chipping and the floors were covered in a thick layer of dust and grime; the furniture still stood in its place, also covered in a thick layer of dust. “How come there haven’t been any break-ins?” Jack frowned, “No one is stupid enough to come in here.” Gina rolled her eyes, “Let me guess, the big bad ghosts?” She was still laughing when a noise echoed through the asylum; it sounded like metal connecting with a wall somewhere deeper in the building. Veda jumped, clutching at Kelso’s arm, “What the hell was that?” Kane would have enjoyed the fear in Veda’s eyes, had she not been feeling the same way. Zack smiled, “Nothing to worry about, Veda, it’s just the old piping.” Kelso shook Veda off and Kane couldn’t help but smile at that. Gina shook her head, “You people are crazy.” Zack started explaining how they could all sleep in the main lounge area, or choose to separate from the group at night, as long as they all stayed on the same floor and got up early the next morning for work to begin. They all decided for night one, staying together would be best, so sleeping bags were spread out on the floor. While everyone talked and joked, Kane’s attention was on the doorway that led out to the long hallway. ‘Come’ Kane frowned; that was a female voice, a voice she didn’t recognize. ‘Come’ Kane stood, “I’ll be right back.” Zack turned, “I’m not sure if all the lights work.” Kane picked up a camping lamp, “I’ll take this with.” Moth stood, “Let me go with you.” ‘Come Alone’ Kane shook her head, “No worries, I’m just going to the toilet, I won't be long.” She walked out quickly, vaguely hearing Veda saying that she was crazy for walking off alone. Kane frowned when she realized that the passageway and all the doorways leading off it were in complete darkness. She sighed, “You were in jail, you can’t be afraid of a little darkness.” She started forward with the lamp held out in front of her. She stopped dead when she realized she had gone so far down the passage that she could no longer see the light from the lounge area. The door to her right caught her attention, she wasn’t sure why, but she felt that she needed to go in. Pushing the door open and going in, she was met with an office. Going in, she set the lamp on the corner of the desk and opened one of the drawers; it held a stack of files. Pulling them out, she set them on the desk and took the first one; opening it she found a picture and details such as names, height, address and illness. She sighed and reached for the lamp, about to leave when a sudden gust of wind blew through, sending a few files from the desk. She picked the files up, and as she was about to place them back on the stack, she froze at the name on the corner of the file which she had just been about to cover. Star. She dropped the files and opened the file with the name Star on it. The picture was of a man with long brown hair and eyes identical to Moths. The name was Jethro Star. She carried on reading the file, realizing that he was Moth’s father and that he had been released around the same time Moth had been born. She went through the file quickly, scanning the pages, and taking note that they said he was an extremely violent man. Kane frowned, trying to figure out why she had been led to this. As if in answer, the second drawer slid open. She picked up the first file and opened it; it was a file on one of the nurses who had worked in the asylum; she had been fired for having a relationship with a patient; Jethro Star. The name listed was Jasmine Hashmi. Kane realized this woman must have been Moth’s mother; her hand going to the pendant around her neck. ‘Keep away from him. Break the Curse’ She returned the files, took the lamp and walked out, closing the door behind her. She turned, planning on returning to the lounge area where the others were, but suddenly she froze; fear gripping her. She had an intense feeling that someone was behind her. Gripping the lamp tightly, she turned; every bit of her body screamed at her to run. Instead, she took a step forward. There was something wet on the floor, and she stepped closer to examine it. Water trickled down from the floor above; Kane was just about to reach for it when she heard the loud clanging sound again and decided it would be best to get out of there. She turned and heading back towards the lounge, her head whipping around to make sure no one was behind her; she walked straight into someone. She let out a gasp, ready to attack; but relaxed when she realized it was Moth. He frowned, “Where were you? Are you okay?” Kane nodded, “I came across an office with all these files in it; was your father Jethro Star?” Moth’s frown deepened, “How do you?” “He was a patient here, released in the same year that you were born.” “What? I had no idea.” “Was your mother Jasmine Hashmi?” Moth’s eyes widened, “Yes.” “She was a nurse here; fired for having a relationship with your father while he was still a patient.” Moth frowned again, “How did you find all of this out?” Kane shrugged, “I followed clues.” “Another spirit?” Kane nodded; grateful that he didn’t think she was crazy. He sighed and held out his hand to her, “Let’s get back before they come looking for us.” Together they walked back into the lounge, as they passed Veda, Kane heard her muttering “Freaks.” Kane stopped and turned, “Do you have something to say, Veda?” Zack looked up, “Girls.” Veda grinned smugly and Kane took another step towards her but Moth squeezed her hand and she turned away, walking with him to the now cleaned couch near Cassie, Cliff, Collin and Macy. Gina and Scott were in the middle of the room, with everyone else scattered around. Kane got onto the couch, feeling as if things were about to start getting a lot stranger in the asylum. She fell asleep with the thought of dread in her mind, and her hand entwined with
