Chapter 8

The day started rather normally. They were busy in one of the large dining rooms; painting the walls. Veda turned to Kane, “I need the ladder.” Kane rolled her eyes, “So go get it.” Veda stormed towards the ladder, purposefully kicking over a tin of white paint, and sending a large blob onto Macy’s dark jeans. Kane narrowed her eyes, “Watch it, Veda.” Aside from Cliff and Collin, the room was just the girls; the guys had gone with Zack to take care of the plumbing in one of the bathrooms. Veda glared at Kane, “Or what?” Kane had been crouching at the wall, she stood, “Don’t push me, Veda.” Gina cleared her throat, “K, let it go.” Kane ignored her and continued her stare down with Veda. Veda smiled, suddenly ripping Cliff’s glasses from his face, she threw them to the floor and stood on them. Cliff glared at her, “You’re such a bitch.” Veda rolled her eyes, “Shut up, four eyes.” “Veda,” Kane started towards her, “You just never learn, do you?” she picked up a half-full tin of paint by the handle as she reached Veda. Kane smiled, and swung the tin, making a satisfying sound as it connected with the side of Veda’s face; sending her spinning before she hit the ground. Gina glared at Kane and crouched next to Veda, checking to see if she was okay. “Girls?” Kane turned to Zack, “She deserved it, I swear.” Zack sighed, “What happened?” Veda sat up, her face already a dark purple with a bit of blood seeping through. Gina stood, “Kane, you can’t-” Kane spun, “You stay the hell out of this. That little b***h and her airhead friends have been giving Cliff and Macy a hard time their whole lives; as their friend, I refuse to allow it! That’s what friends do, Gina, not that you would know anything about that, because not only did you jump to get my leftovers the moment I left, you’re also just like Veda.” Zack held up his hands, “Girls, please.” Kane spun to him, “Take this as a lesson; don’t leave us in the same room together again.” She dropped the tin and walked out. She was surprised to see that Zack followed her. “Kane, I’d like to speak to you for a second. This whole thing is for you and Veda to learn to at least be civil to each other, and for you to stop being so violent.” “She broke Cliff’s glasses, so you might want to have this chat with her. Keep her in check.” She turned and walked away from him. Taking a few turns, she came to the rooms. Most of the doors were broken, so she went into one of the rooms, frowning when her eyes landed on the restraints on the walls and bed. She knew from personal experience about the restraints on the bed; she thought back to the first few days in the mental institution, she had been tied to the bed herself, they had said she was too much of a risk to have her loose, she had spent so much time tied to the bed, in and out of consciousness. She shook her head, ridding herself of the terrible memories. She turned to walk out, but the door slammed shut, she slowly walked up to the door and tried the handle, even as she did, she knew it wouldn’t work. Sighing, she turned and slid down to the floor, her back against the door. Suddenly she heard a dripping sound, and she snapped her head up; there was a thin line of rusty water running down the wall from the ceiling. Getting to her feet, she went over to take a closer look at the deep red water. She rolled her eyes, “Bloodied water, how original.” As she turned to go back to the door, her hand grazed along the bed. The moment her hand touched the bed the restraints curled around her wrist, tightening like a second skin. She hysterically tried to get her hand free, the memories that feeling brought back making the panic even worse. Suddenly she stopped her thrashing as the old, dusty sheet rose up above her. “No, no, no.” The sheet came down, covering her; wrapping tightly around her. She gasped as she was thrown face-first onto the bed, something pushing her face into the mattress, suffocating her. She could feel herself getting light-headed; her one wrist still tied to the bed. She threw herself to the side, tipping the bed over onto her. The heavy steel frame felt as if it was crushing her chest. She was battling to get air in and her face started to tingle as she struggled against the bed. Her vision started going as she heard the door open, the bed was pulled off her and she saw Moth. “London, are you okay?” He dropped to her side, worry filling his face. Kane nodded, happy that she could breathe again. “What happened?” Kane sat up slowly, “The door closed and locked me in, the restraints on the bed closed around my wrist, and something tried to suffocate me.” Moth frowned, “What? That’s it; you’re not to go anywhere alone.” Suddenly Zack was in the doorway, “What the hell happened?” Moth all but shouted the events at Zack, “We have to get out of here; she could have been killed.” Zack scanned the room before turning to Kane, “Are you okay?” Kane was almost one hundred percent sure he looked disappointed as if he had expected something more to have happened. She nodded, “I’m fine.”
