Chapter Five
I laid in bed with Kimmy fast asleep in my arms. I couldn't sleep, even after going three rounds. My brain couldn't switch off. I just kept thinking over and over about dad.
What was wrong with him?
How long had he been sick?
...How long did he have left?
The thoughts terrified me. I carefully moved Kimmy off me and got out of bed, Pulling on my Pj bottoms and made my way in to the kitchen. I poured myself a drink before going to the front room and grabbing my laptop.
I made myself comfortable in the chair and started searching for the next flight to Canada. That's where every one thought I was from, let's be honest, what normal person lives in the North Pole. I'll email back home and get some one to pick me up when I get there.
I managed to find one that was leaving late tonight, which gave me enough time to head in to work, sort out the staff rotas and head to the air port with more than enough time to catch the flight.
I normally bring the work diary home, so I can start rota's but be aware of what days people need off. Since I couldn't pack with out probably waking Kimmy, I decided to start the shift rota's so that it's less work to do when I got to work later.
After a couple of hours, I managed to get most of it done. Luckily, even taking two weeks off, there was still enough staff to cover and manage. It was just one less thing to worry about when I was home with the family.
It was nearly 6 am before the sleepless night started to hit me, but, It was nearly time for me to ''get up'' for work any way. I headed back in to the bed room and as quickily, as I could, I started packing a couple of bags.
Even with my best attempts, I was half way through the second bag when I heard Kimmy's snoring stop. I looked over my shoulder and saw that she was slowly waking up.
'H-Hey'. She was sleeping and groggy. When she noticed me packing my bags she sat up and looked at me, confused. 'What's going on?'
'I have to go away for a little while'. I told her, trying to focus on my task at hand, I didn't want to stop moving, because if i did, I'd probably fall asleep.
'Does this have some thing to do with that letter?' When I didn't answer, I heard her climb out of bed and her feet across the wooden floor made it obvious that she was coming over to me. I didn't stop, until Her arms reached up and grabbed mine, physically stopping me. 'Nicky.. Talk to me'.
I looked at her, for a split second, letting my emotions shine through. I could tell by the look on her face, seeing me so vulnerable was a big shock to her.
'The letter... Was from my parents, my fathers very sick... Dying in fact'. She gasped and pulled me in to a big, tight hug. I smiled sadly and wrapped my arms around her waist, hugging her back.
'Oh, Nicky, I'm so sorry'. She pulled away slightly, but she was still incredibly close.
'I'm packing to go home for a while, I have some important family stuff to sort out'. She nodded, understandably.
'Do you need any help?' I looked around and sighed, I'd packed more than enough already.
'No, I'm pretty done'. She smiled and stroked my face with her hand softly. I closed my eyes and leaned in to it.
'Come on..' pulling on my hand, we headed back to the bed and laid down. We still had ''a little'' while before we had to leave, but i intended to enjoy every chilled out second until then..
