"You're my big sister..." "Why don't you tell me about mom?" The little girl with glasses and huge round eyes held her hand almost in tears as the other girl stayed silent. The night was covered with deep fog that seemed to blind the moon to its shine and the silence only made the tension thick. They hung in choking caresses, leaving a sense of goose bumps on their skin.
The other girl, Serena. That's her name. She had her head bent, her fist clenched as she bit on her lips, barely holding back, she wanted to let the tears go for so long now... Only the two of them in the dim darkness. The small light coming from an old lantern which did little to illuminate or chase away the fear and shadows hidden in the dark.
"Ivy... It's no time to think of mom now. I heard Miss Grumpy talking about throwing us on the streets. They want to close down the orphanage but no one wants to adopt us... They don't want to adopt you and me...
"You..." "You want to leave me alone?" Ivy stuttered, her voice low, mirroring the hurt she felt, her tiny tears rolling down her cheeks as she stared at the girl who'd been nothing but a mom, her shield, a big sis, her only world... She wanted to leave her alone?
That's what raced through Ivy's mind.
"I don't want to Ivy. I can't and that's what makes it worse..." Serena voice came off as she whispered, her own tears trailing down her cheeks. They were hurtful tears... Didn't they say they would definitely come back? For them and for her, twelve years had gone by and all she could do was still hang on by the broken thread of their promises. The world had only been cruel to them for most of it. She'd try shielding her kid's sister away from all of it, leaving her innocent soul as pure as it was.
She didn't mind going to hell for her and this was probably their own form of hell, and maybe it got worse. There was probably no God for them and only the devil had their fate- as toys in his fragile hands...
Did Ivy understand anything by that? No. All she felt was relief as Serena whispered she wouldn't.
"Sera, would you let me have a cold?" "Your tears are probably an ocean on my pj's now", Ivy muttered, bearing a smile along her sister's neck. Chuckling, Serena aimed to pull back but intentionally pulled off her sister's hairpin, losing her hair in wavy curls as they fell all around her.
Soft as silk and long, they almost got to her legs despite she was still so small. A unique trait of Ivy is her hair- a dark gold with a faint touch of red. A total contrast to Serena's raven black hair and hazel eyes. Ivy's were a total mix of ocean blue and violet, but they were mostly hidden behind her huge glass frame.
A small gasp followed and a childish chuckle from Ivy. She stood smiling as Serena helped her with removing her glasses, but a piercing bright light suddenly flashed into the room, followed by the sound of thunder.
Not surprisingly, Ivy was in Serena's arms, coiling around in fear as they shared a cheery laughter filling the dark room with a sense of warmth. "Sometimes, you make me doubt if I am your sister," Serena whispered into her ear, earning another laughter followed by the sound of heavy rain.
Maybe they hadn't noticed how oddly quiet the orphanage had suddenly become. With a wistful smile, Serena began stroking Ivy's hair, slow and gentle... "And maybe you'll miss Theodore." "Funny how your small heart is already beating for someone and for him?!" She asked, a small laugh escaping her lips as she glanced down at Ivy who was already fast asleep. A small sad smile and a deep sigh.
"Don't worry, I'll finally get to tell you everything... At least till tomorrow..."
"... We would run far away from here and never look back. At least the God of heavens would have a little mercy on you, this cute little five-year-old... If not her, right?..." But...
What was mercy in the hands of the devil...
