The Night Everything Changed
Rain hammered against the windows of the small café where I worked, turning the city lights outside into blurry streaks of color. I wiped down the counter for what felt like the hundredth time that evening and glanced at the clock. 11:47 PM. Almost closing time. My feet ached from standing all day, and my stomach growled. I hadn't eaten since lunch, but that wasn't unusual. When rent, bills, and tuition were constantly chasing you, food became a luxury. "Emma, lock up after you're done," my manager called. I nodded. "Goodnight." The bell above the door jingled. I looked up. A tall man stepped inside. My breath caught. He was impossibly handsome. Dark hair. Sharp jawline. Broad shoulders wrapped in a black tailored coat. The kind of man who looked like he belonged on magazine covers. Not in a struggling café. Water dripped from his coat as his piercing gray eyes scanned the room. Then they landed on me. For some reason, my heart skipped. "Sorry," I said nervously. "We're about to close." His gaze lingered for a second longer than necessary. "Coffee. Black." His voice was deep and commanding. Not a request. A demand. I frowned. "I just said we're closing." One corner of his lips lifted. "Please." The smile was brief. But devastating. I sighed. "Fine." As I prepared his coffee, I could feel his eyes following my every movement. It made me strangely nervous. I handed him the cup. "That'll be four dollars." Instead of paying immediately, he studied me. Like he was trying to figure something out. "What's your name?" I blinked. "Why?" "Curious." I crossed my arms. "Customers don't usually need my name." A faint chuckle escaped him. "Fair enough." He finally handed me a crisp hundred-dollar bill. I stared. "I don't have change for this." "Keep it." "What?" "For the inconvenience." I looked at him like he'd lost his mind. "Nobody tips ninety-six dollars for coffee." His eyes darkened. "Maybe I do." Before I could argue, he turned and walked out into the storm. Leaving me completely speechless. Who was that man? And why did I feel like I'd just met someone who would change my life? Three months later. My life was falling apart. I stared at the pregnancy test in my shaking hand. Two pink lines. Positive. Again. The second test showed the same result. My knees nearly gave out. "No..." Tears burned my eyes. This couldn't be happening. Not now. Not when everything was already a mess. Not when I had nobody. My hands trembled as memories flooded back. That night. The charity gala. The accidental mix-up. The hotel room. And him. The stranger from the café. The man whose name I didn't even know until later. Alexander Kingston. The billionaire CEO everyone in the city talked about. The most powerful man in the country. One night. One terrible mistake. One unforgettable night. And now... I was pregnant. I sank onto the bathroom floor. How was I supposed to tell him? Would he even believe me? Men like Alexander didn't marry women like me. They didn't fall in love. They certainly didn't have children with waitresses. A knock sounded on my apartment door. I quickly wiped my tears. When I opened it, my best friend Sophie stood there. The moment she saw my face, she froze. "What happened?" I silently handed her the pregnancy test. Her eyes widened. "Oh my God." "I know." "Are you sure?" I handed her the second one. Then the third. Then the fourth. She looked horrified. "Okay. Definitely pregnant." I burst into tears. Sophie immediately hugged me. "We'll figure this out." "No, we won't." "Yes, we will." "I don't even know where to start." She pulled away. "What about the father?" I laughed bitterly. "You mean the billionaire who probably doesn't even remember my name?" "Tell him." I shook my head. "He'll think I'm after his money." "You don't know that." "I do." But deep down, I wasn't sure. Two weeks later. I sat nervously in a private hospital. The doctor smiled while studying the ultrasound. Then her expression changed. She looked surprised. Then shocked. My stomach twisted. "What?" The doctor turned the screen toward me. "Miss Carter..." "Yes?" "You aren't carrying one baby." I blinked. "What?" "You aren't carrying two babies either." The room suddenly felt too small. "What are you saying?" The doctor smiled. "Congratulations." My heart pounded. "You're carrying triplets." Silence. Complete silence. I stared at her. Waiting for her to laugh. Waiting for someone to tell me it was a joke. Nobody did. My vision blurred. "Triplets?" The doctor nodded. "Three healthy babies." I nearly fainted. Three? THREE? One baby was terrifying enough. How was I supposed to raise three? Tears filled my eyes. Not from happiness. From panic. Absolute panic. The next morning. I stood outside Kingston Global Headquarters. The tallest building in the city. My palms were sweating. I had spent the entire night debating whether I should come. But Alexander deserved to know. Even if he hated me. Even if he thought I was lying. The receptionist smiled politely. "Do you have an appointment?" "No." "Then I'm afraid Mr. Kingston isn't available." I expected that. Until a familiar voice spoke behind me. "Let her through." My heart stopped. Alexander. He stood near the elevators. Looking even more powerful than I remembered. The expensive suit. The cold expression. The commanding presence. His gray eyes locked onto mine. Recognition flashed instantly. "Emma." I swallowed hard. He remembered. The receptionist looked confused. Alexander approached slowly. "What are you doing here?" His voice was calm. Too calm. I took a shaky breath. "We need to talk." His gaze sharpened. "About what?" I looked around nervously. "Privately." For several seconds, he said nothing. Then he nodded. "Come with me." His office was bigger than my entire apartment. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city. Everything screamed wealth. Power. Success. The complete opposite of my life. Alexander sat behind his desk. "Talk." Straight to the point. I appreciated that. It also terrified me. I clenched my hands together. Then blurted it out. "I'm pregnant." The room went silent. Alexander didn't move. Didn't blink. Didn't react. For a moment, I wondered if he'd heard me. Then his jaw tightened. "What?" "I'm pregnant." His eyes narrowed. "And?" I felt my heart crack. Of course. Why had I expected anything different? I forced myself to continue. "The babies are yours." A dangerous silence filled the room. Alexander slowly stood. The temperature seemed to drop instantly. "Babies?" My stomach sank. Plural. I hadn't meant to reveal that part yet. His gaze sharpened. "How many?" I swallowed. "Three." For the first time since meeting him... Alexander Kingston looked stunned. Completely stunned. He stared at me. Then laughed once. A short, disbelieving laugh. "Triplets?" I nodded. The silence stretched. Seconds. Minutes. I couldn't tell anymore. Finally, Alexander walked toward the window. His back facing me. I prepared myself for rejection. For accusations. For lawyers. For humiliation. Instead, he said something that made my blood run cold. "If what you're saying is true..." I frowned. "What?" He turned. His expression was unreadable. "Then you're in danger." Every muscle in my body froze. "What do you mean?" Before he could answer— His office doors burst open. A panicked assistant rushed inside. "Sir!" Alexander immediately stiffened. "What is it?" The assistant looked terrified. "Your grandfather is here." Alexander cursed under his breath. My confusion deepened. Why was that a problem? Then I saw it. For the first time since meeting him... Fear. Real fear. In Alexander Kingston's eyes. And somehow... I knew my life was about to change forever. To Be Continued... 🔥
