All the next day and the day after she sat among the trees, unable to go further than crawl to the stream for some water. She sat gazing at the house, hoping against hope that Arthur would appear. Perhaps he had heard what had happened to her and was out searching for her. But why would he look in the middle of a wood? She dared not call out in case James or one of his friends should be nearby. Once she had finished the celery she had nothing to eat, only water to drink.
