Episode 1
Lila stretched as the final bell rang, signaling the end of a long school day. As soon as she and her friends were free, they rushed to Alex’s house, eager to dive into the new virtual reality game they’d been obsessing over for weeks. Once inside, the group barely had time for small talk before Alex pulled out the sleek, high-tech devices. They all strapped in, laughing as they uploaded their consciousness into the game through their neural links. Lila’s heart raced with excitement—this was going to be the ultimate adventure. The moment they logged into the game room, their avatars flickered to life, surrounded by the fantastical ambiance of the Cinderella storyline. A soft chime sounded, followed by the game’s voice: “Welcome, players, to the Cinderella World. Random roles and quests assigned. Complete tasks to earn bonus points. Good luck.” Lila glanced at her friends, each receiving their own notifications. She eagerly swiped to open hers, holding her breath. Role Assigned: Evil Stepsister Primary Quest: Sabotage Cinderella. Bonus Points for Completion: +80 Random Task: Kick over the water bucket. Bonus: +10 points. “Seriously?” Lila groaned, frustrated that she wasn’t the lead character. The evil stepsister? Of all roles! Still, the game’s immersive environment pulled her in. She glanced around, marveling at the level of detail. She stood in a quaint yet weathered kitchen, the hearth crackling in the background. The rough wooden floor creaked under her feet, and the faint scent of freshly baked bread wafted through the air. As she turned, she spotted two familiar faces—her best friend, Sasha, playing the role of Cinderella, and Sam, another of their friends, who had been assigned the role of the other evil stepsister. The three of them locked eyes, each sizing up their new roles. “So, what did you guys get?” Sasha asked, her excitement barely contained. “I’m Cinderella,” she added with a smug grin. “Yeah, well, I’m your stepsister,” Lila replied, rolling her eyes. She hadn’t expected anything else after seeing Sasha’s role. “And I’ve got a bunch of tasks that make me look like the bad guy.” “Me too,” Sam chimed in, reading his task list. “I’ve got to do something ridiculous like steal a loaf of bread. And, apparently, I need to ruin your day.” Lila smiled, slightly relieved that Sam was on her team, even if their characters were supposed to be antagonists. The game seemed determined to make things complicated. But before they could get too comfortable, the system chimed again. New Task: Kick the water bucket near Cinderella’s feet. She glanced down, noticing a small bucket of water at Sasha’s feet. It looked innocuous enough, but Lila could already see the wheels turning in her friend’s head as Sasha squinted at it suspiciously. “You wouldn’t,” Sasha warned, eyes narrowing. Lila grinned mischievously, ready to embrace her role. Without hesitation, she kicked the bucket over, water splashing all over the floor. The game responded instantly. Task Complete. Points Earned: +10. Skill Unlocked: Leg Kick. Lila smirked, satisfied. “Looks like I just learned a new move.” Lila stood in the dusty room, watching Sasha tackle the task of cleaning. She felt bad for her best friend, who looked lost in her Cinderella role. “Maybe I should help her,” Lila said softly. Just as she moved to grab a broom, Sam, the other stepsister, shook his head. “You’re the evil stepsister, Lila. Helping isn’t exactly in character, is it?” His voice had a playful edge, and Lila paused, realizing he was right. Lila paused, her hand hovering over the broom. “Right,” she said with a sigh. “The evil stepsister wouldn’t be so helpful.” Sasha, still fumbling with her task, looked utterly defeated. “I don’t even know where to start,” she mumbled, glancing around the cluttered room. Sam leaned in, lowering his voice as if revealing a secret. “You’re Cinderella, remember? Use your skills. You’ve got animal affinity—let the creatures do the dirty work.” Sasha’s eyes widened, a spark of realization hitting her. “Right! I forgot!” she exclaimed. Lila and Sam quickly ducked into the next room, peeking through the cracked door. Sam pulled Lila closer, covering her slightly as they crouched, his arm resting around her. She tried to ignore the warmth of his body, but the proximity made her feel like she was being held by him, and she found it oddly comforting. Sasha, standing in the middle of the room, glanced around nervously. “Okay… how do I even start this?” She cleared her throat and tried softly, “My dear animal friends, I need your help. I can’t do this on my own.” Nothing happened. Sam snickered under his breath, and Lila had to press her lips together to hold back a laugh. Sasha spun in a circle, throwing her arms up dramatically. “Come forth, my loyal servants!” she cried out. Still, no response. Frustrated, Sasha began to hum. It was shaky at first, but she soon tried to sing. Unfortunately, Sasha was notoriously tone-deaf, and her attempt at a song was… less than magical. Lila and Sam cringed at the sound, but Sam, with a mischievous grin, reached over to gently cover Lila’s ears. “Sasha really needs to take some singing lessons from you,” he whispered, his breath warm against her cheek. Before Lila could respond, something miraculous—or rather, bizarre—happened. A faint glow surrounded Sasha, and the system chimed in: “Skill acquired: Song of Summoning.” Suddenly, the soft scratching of tiny paws echoed through the room. A few mice scurried out from under the furniture, dancing around Sasha’s feet. Soon after, squirrels peeked through the open window, and pigeons fluttered in, landing gracefully on the windowsill. Just as Lila thought it couldn’t get any stranger, the unmistakable rustling of cockroach legs reached her ears. A whole army of cockroaches emerged, swarming toward Sasha in synchronized movements. Their antennae twitched in rhythm with her song, creating a surreal, almost grotesque performance. Lila and Sam stood frozen in the next room, speechless as they watched the chaotic scene unfold. Sasha was at the center of it all, her tuneless singing somehow charming all these creatures into action. The mice, squirrels, pigeons, and even the cockroaches worked together, sweeping and cleaning as if under a spell. Lila swallowed, her throat dry. “This… feels like a cult meeting.” Sam’s expression was unreadable for a moment, but then he burst into laughter, shaking his head in disbelief. “I’ve seen some weird stuff in games, but this is next-level.” He looked down at Lila, still smiling, and his hand slid from her ear, brushing her hair back lightly. “We might need to run before the roaches get any ideas.” Lila giggled, still huddled under Sam’s arm. The two of them, caught between amusement and horror, watched as the house was cleaned in the most bizarre, unsettling way imaginable. Just as she moved to grab a broom, Sam, the other stepsister, shook his head. “You’re the evil stepsister, Lila. Helping isn’t exactly in character, is it?” His voice had a playful edge, and Lila paused, realizing he was right. It
