Dwight was present in all of my games. He would always wait for me in the bleachers while I was taking a shower. Despite that, no one thought that we were dating. He casually hang out with my team and he's being nice to everyone. They must be thinking he's doing his job as the president of student council.
"Excuse me? Where are you going?" We were in a call when he asked again when I told him one Thursday night that I'm heading out to have dinner with Lee. He's been nagging about that since Tuesday.
"Quick dinner with Lee. I'll text you later when I'm back in the hotel. Are you going out with your friends again?" I tried to divert the topic.
"Just the two of you?" He's using disgruntled tone which made my bite my lip.
"Yes. I've known him for a long time, and he's a good guy, Dwight. We'll just have a dinner and I'm going back straight to the hotel" He gave me a sarcastic laugh on the other line.
"Does Emerald know him too? Why didn't he invite her? And why did you never ask for my permission before agreeing to see him out? Did you even tell him that you already have a boyfriend?" He's firing those questions when I received an incoming call from Lee.
"I already made a promisea to him, Dwight. We're still dating; I haven't agreed to be your girlfriend. Let's talk when..."
"You're not leaving." There was finality in his voice. I had to take a deep sigh before answering him in a disgusted tone.
"You can't restrict me from the things I want, and the same thing goes for me. I won't stop you from going out with your friends because I trust you. Don't call me, I'll text you later, Dwight. Bye." I ended the call. I want him to trust me because I'll never betray him.
I chose a decent clothes in my closet and let my hair down. I didn't even bother putting on make up. I texted Lee to wait for me in the lobby of the hotel. I bumped into my roommate who's just coming back from dinner with her boyfriend.
As soon as the lift opened, a tall guy standing by the help desk caught my attention. He's wearing designer white shirt, black shorts and a pair of expensive slippers. The man himself looks expensive. I walked closer to him as he's staring coldly at me.
"Hi."
"I don't want to fight because tomorrow is your championship game, but you're pushing me my button, babe. You even hang up on me." His jaw moved in deceitful way. He's considering my game tomorrow that's why he didn't call back when I ended our conversation.
"You shouldn't really argue with me, Dwight. Who are you waiting for?" I asked. He put both of his hands in the pockets of his shorts when I walked closer. He avoided my gaze, and I love how the muscles in his jaw and neck moved in frustration.
"Elliot." He answered.
"Okay. You have your laptop with you, so I guess you're not partying tonight. Who else will go with you?"
"Dude!" I hear his voice behind me.
"There you go. I rescheduled the meeting in one hour. See you later, babe." The warn in his voice as he looked at me was evident. He didn't even answer my question before he and Elliot walked away. I'm wondering if his friends knew about us.
Lee was waiting for me in the couch and he saw me approaching Dwight. I don't want to talk about Dwight with him or with any other guy. Whatever that is going on between us, I want it to stay with us.
He took me to a high-toned french restaurant not far from the hotel. He said it was his first time there too and he only found out about the place by searching in the internet. As Lee pulled the chair for me, my eyes met another man's.
My face turned pale when I confirmed that it's Dwight who's sitting in the table near the window. With him is Elliot who's busy talking with someone over the laptop.
"What is the problem, Yasmin?" Lee asked. I immediately shook my head. The waiter asked for our order, and Lee courteously asked what I want. After seeing Dwight, I suddenly lost my appetite. Is it just coincidence that they're here too?
I felt his stare from time to time which made me unable to enjoy the time with Lee. We just talked about our life as athletes and students. Things were obviously harder when we stepped into college.
"I heard you're dating Dwight Bentley." I quaked when he mentioned his name. I reached for the glass of water to compose myself.
"Yes. We're dating happily now." He nodded. I think that sets the mood for the rest of our time together. I only went to this dinner to kill his hope on me. He was a good friend back in highschool, but it's been a long time and I couldn't even remember his name when we met again. At the very least, I want to turn him down in a decent way.
Until the time we're done eating and was about to check out, Dwight and Elliot still seemed busy. There's only a few people in the restaurant, so I am not sure of Lee saw them before. I texted Dwight that I'll be leaving ahead with Lee, but he didn't respond.
He didn't answer my calls and questions in messages to him, but he texted me at around 11:30 to inform me that he's back to the hotel. I think he's really mad, but can't say anything because he didn't want to annoy me before my game tomorrow. It made me more paranoid. Damn him.
The next day, my roommate carried a big basket of red flowers to put in my bed.
"Just how popular are you, Yasmin? Wow!" She exclaimed while she's watching on the card attached to the basket.
"Cheering you on the last game.
No need to be pressured
because you're already a champion
in my heart.
Love,
Bentley"
It had me giggling in my bed for couple of minutes. I was extremely motivated on that day.
We arrived at the sports center, and I saw Dwight looking like a don in smart casual. He was smiling to everyone, but everytime our eyes would meet, he would give me that evil grin. He might give me an earful later for what happened last night.
Whatever, I'll just do my best now to win the gold for my parents, Dwight and my school.
At exactly 10:30 AM, I am lining with other swimmers who will compete for the championship. I'll do my best and have no regrets. I took a deep sigh while waiting for the gun shot that represents the start. I emptied my mind, but I can't help thinking of the note Dwight left me this morning. I have to win; he made me want to win.
When I dived into the water, I have given all my energy. I leveraged my strength and just stroke as fast as I could. I muted the world, and focused on my speed. When I came out of water, I felt the rush of my heartbeat. The cheering of crowd was immensely overwhelming. Did I win?
My coach handed me towel before he hugged me real tight. My tears rolled down, and hugged him back.
"Thank you, coach, for staying with me on my last playing year. This is for you!" I whispered.
"Congrats, Yas. Thank you for doing your best until the end. I am so proud!" My team members know how close coach and I with each other. We were almost like families to each other. He's the first I will miss when I think about swimming. How he pushed me through my limits and motivated me when I couldn't trust myself were my secrets to being a champion.
People start taking pictures, and some represents of media wanted to make an interview, but someone wrapped the towel around my back first. I turned around only to see Dwight who's wearing a big fake smile.
"Congrats, Yasmin. You were wonderful." My cheeks flushed. He was powerful enough to implied that to me.
"Thanks." After that, I didn't see him again. I went to have a shower and fixed my things. The celebration will be held in the restaurant across Stallion University tonight. We'll be attending the closing ceremony in the afternoon, and we'll fly back to Manila. Our things are already in the bus, so our team decided to take a nap and rest there after lunch.
I chose the backseat, so no one will talk to me while I sleep, but in the middle of my silent lonesome time, someone sat beside me and accidentally hauled my arm. I removed the hood of my jacket that was covering my face to see the person.
His scent made me calm for a while, but then he showed his serious face again. What is he doing here?! I thought Dwight is busy with checking out other athletes. There are few who are still competing for championship at this lastm oment before the closing.
"Why are you here?"
"To see you. Are you getting back at me for ignoring your calls and messages yesterday?" My jaw dropped. Was he texting me? Where did I put my phone? I searched for it all around only to see it on his hand.
"You're so careless, babe. How can you leave your phone in the seat beside you while you sleep soundly?" He might think I'm careless. I was just tired and full from the lunch that's why.
"Go do your thing, Dwight. We have more time with each other when we come back to Manila. I won't demand your attention now coz I know you have responsibilities as president of SC." He chuckled sexily as he shook his head like what I said was a joke. He put his head on my shoulder.
"Are you chasing me away because you're concerned that I won't comply with my duties or because you want to rest?" He said silently. There are other athletes resting in the bus.
"I think both." I joked.
"Okay. I'll leave later. I just missed you. He looked up to me and placed his face in my neck. I bite my lip again when I felt his little kisses there. I caressed his hair.
"I'm addicted to your smell." He murmured as he took something out from the pocket of his shorts. He gave a little distance when he opened the black box with the embroid logo of expensive jewelry collection.
"This is me congratulating you for a job well done, Yasmin." I held my breath when a white gold necklace with brilliant-cut diamond center stone came in sight.
"I-i don't need expensive gifts from you, D-dwight. If you think..." He pulled out the necklace when he cut off what I was saying.
"You think I'll give you less than what you deserve, Yasmin?" When our eyes met, I felt every word he said. I looked down when I can't contain the affection he's inflicting. I find it too sexy.
He carefully put the strands of my hair behind my ear, so he can put that thing on my neck. Everytime his hand would touch my skin, I felt my knees shaking. His gift was shouting elegance and class. I'll be sure to wear that on special events, definitely not now.
"It looks perfect on you."
"Thank you, Dwight. Ah.. I don't know what to say."
"It's okay, Yasmin. You can take your time in getting used to the things I'll spoil you with. I don't plan to stop anyway."
"Wait, Dwight. This is not what I want. I'm not like other girls who get swayed by material things. You're enough. You are the one I want, your attention and time. I don't need expensive gifts in the future." He grinned and wrapped his arms around my waist.
He gave a peck to my lips, and then to my nose and to my forehead.
"No worries. You'll get both my time and all my money. I just don't want you hanging out with other guys next time. You were lucky last night because you have important event coming up the next day, but that won't be the same next time. I'll be one stupid i***t if I ever let you alone with a guy again."
I laughed.
"Were you jealous? It was awkward for me too to be in the same restaurant."
"Let's not talk about it."
"I didn't know you were the jealous type."
He gave me a frantic look that made me stop.
"I love you, Yasmin. You were the trap I couldn't avoid. Now, I want to grow with you. I don't want just a game with you. I want a relationship that will last."
"That's exactly what I want too, Dwight."
