5. Coffee and the First Conversation

1422 Words
The next morning The sun had only climbed halfway above the eastern horizon bathing the dusty streets on the city edge in soft golden light This was nothing like the day before when Geraldo had arrived by chance and circumstance This morning he walked here on purpose A strong quiet pull led him back down that narrow lane to the place that had shifted something deep and hidden inside his heart His gleaming black luxury car was parked some distance away at the end of the wider main road He had deliberately left it there rather than pull up right in front of the tiny stall There was a strange gentle hesitation within him as if all the wealth attached to his name might disturb the simple calm that radiated from this place Geraldo stepped out and walked the hundred meters or so on foot He let the cool morning breeze brush his face and filled his ears with the familiar sounds of ordinary life Vegetable sellers calling out their wares children laughing as they ran past and the low rumble of passing motorcycles All of it felt so vivid so real something he rarely experienced in his cold formal elite circles As the humble outline of the stall came into view Geraldo’s heart beat a little faster The wooden doors stood wide open revealing the morning bustle within The rich scent of cooking blended with the warm aroma of freshly brewed coffee drifting out to meet him making his steps feel lighter than ever Kirana was there She stood behind the long serving table covered in a simple checkered cloth arranging cups and plates with quick graceful movements Her long straight black hair was tied back with a plain fabric ribbon leaving her clear glowing face fully lit by the morning sun In that very moment that familiar gentle smile curved her lips as she greeted a man who had just sat down on one of the long wooden benches It was the same smile that had broken through the walls around his heart the day before the very reason he had returned today Geraldo paused at the threshold watching the scene with a strange peaceful joy He did not step inside at once He simply stood there captivated by the way Kirana met every person who came No distinction no hesitation no sense of being lesser She served everyone with the same clear gaze the same warm tone and the same boundless kindness Good morning Sir What would you like to order That soft voice pulled Geraldo from his thoughts Kirana now stood right before him across the table her eyes bright and her smile sincere She showed not the slightest surprise at seeing him again She had no idea who he truly was To her he was simply the customer who had eaten here yesterday and come back today There was no sign she recognised the man behind the disguise or the life he lived beyond these walls Geraldo offered a faint smile one that had come to him more often lately It was no formal mask but a smile born of genuine ease He stepped inside and sat on the wooden bench near the window a spot where he could see every corner of the stall and keep Kirana clearly in his sight Good morning he replied softly his voice gentler than usual May I ask what is your most popular drink here I only got to try your food yesterday and the taste has stayed with me ever since Kirana laughed lightly a sound as clear and sweet as water flowing through a forest Thank you Sir you are too kind Our food is just simple home cooking made by my mother As for drinks our regulars love her brewed coffee or warm sweet tea But I also make my own filtered coffee mixed with pure palm sugar It is not too sweet but has a rich strong aroma Would you like to try that I will have yours then Geraldo answered without hesitation The filtered coffee with palm sugar He did not need expensive or fancy drinks All he truly wanted was to sit here a little longer and perhaps speak more with this girl Very well please wait a moment Sir I will bring it right over Kirana moved to the back behind the counter toward the small stove where thin wisps of smoke curled upward Geraldo watched her every movement He saw how carefully she poured boiling water through the cloth filter holding the coffee grounds He noticed how her hands though slightly rough from constant work moved with such grace and tenderness as she prepared his drink For Kirana this was never just work to earn money She did everything with her whole heart as if every cup she made was a small offering to bring joy to someone else Soon a plain white ceramic cup was set before him Steam rose upward carrying the deep scent of coffee blended with the warm sweetness of palm sugar Here you are Sir Please excuse the simple cup Kirana said as she placed a small plate of warm fried bananas on the table This is just a little something to go with it so the taste is not too bitter Geraldo lifted the cup holding its warm surface in his hands It felt strange to him Normally he drank from imported porcelain sets worth millions of rupiah served by uniformed staff at the most exclusive cafes in the city center Yet here holding this plain locally made ceramic cup he felt a warmth that touched him far more deeply than any luxury ever had He took a slow sip The bold bitter taste of coffee met his tongue first followed by the soft natural sweetness of palm sugar spreading gently down his throat It was simple uncomplicated unpretentious And yet it was perfect delicious and somehow far more memorable than any expensive coffee he had tasted in his entire life This is wonderful Geraldo said honestly his eyes locking straight with hers as she waited for his feedback Truly wonderful It feels so comforting It is strange how coffee at fancy places can sometimes feel confusing but this tastes like coming home Kirana beamed with quiet pride her eyes crinkling happily I am so glad you like it Sir My mother always says making coffee or cooking food is all the same It is never about the most expensive ingredients or the finest tools It is all about intention If you make something with a happy sincere heart that feeling will reach the heart of the person who drinks or eats it too Those simple words struck Geraldo deeply Not the finest ingredients or tools but the intention behind them He set his cup down slowly and looked at her closely The curiosity he had felt yesterday had grown into deep admiration This girl lived with so little worked so hard every day sweated and grew tired with every task Yet the words she spoke carried such depth such wisdom such value things he rarely found among the most educated powerful people in his own world You are still so young Kirana Geraldo said beginning their first real conversation using the name he had heard her mother call her How old are you if I may ask Kirana who had been wiping the nearby table paused for a moment turned back to him and smiled softly I am twenty one Sir I only had my birthday just yesterday Twenty one Geraldo murmured quietly Such a tender age At this very moment many girls her age were enjoying themselves studying at top universities traveling abroad or living comfortably on their parents wealth But Kirana stood here behind this wooden table serving customers helping her mother keep their family afloat Do you never grow tired Geraldo asked suddenly The question slipped out unbidden one he had wanted to ask since the moment he saw her yesterday Working from dawn until dusk managing the stall helping your mother Do you never feel burdened Or envious when you see others who have easier lives softer paths better luck For a moment the space around them fell quiet The question felt deeply personal almost intrusive Yet Kirana did not look offended or disturbed at all Instead she sat briefly on the bench opposite him Her expression remained calm her gaze steady and gentle as she looked straight back at him.
