Lyra Valen has spent her entire life being treated like a mistake.

At twenty years old, she still has not shifted into her wolf form, making her the laughingstock of the Silvercrest Pack despite being the Alpha's daughter. Everyone sees her as weak and useless.

But Lyra is hiding a secret even though she does not know it.

On the night she is supposed to bond with her childhood sweetheart, Rowan Ashford, her world shatters. Betrayed by the two people she trusted most, branded a traitor by her own pack, and sentenced to a fate worse than death, Lyra is forced into a political marriage by her father to save her life; with the most feared Alpha alive, Draven Noctis, the ruthless ruler of the Nightfang Pack.

Everyone says Draven destroys anything he touches.

But beneath his terrifying reputation lies secrets darker than Lyra could ever imagine; and a connection neither of them can escape.

As war brews between the packs and buried truths begin to surface, the more her hidden power awakens, the more the people around her are willing to kill to possess it.

In a world built on betrayal, blood, and fated bonds, Lyra must decide who she truly is before the monsters hunting her destroy everything she loves.

Chapter One: The Night They Burned Me
"Tell me honestly," I said. "Do I look like someone they can ignore?" Elara studied my face in the mirror. "No. You look like someone who is about to make them regret every time they tried." I smoothed the front of my dress and told myself she was right. She worked the last few buttons on my back without speaking, and I was grateful for that. I had no more words left in me. I had used them all up since morning, talking myself out of fear and back into hope and then out of fear again, until my own voice felt worn through. Twenty years of whispers and sideways looks and I had learned one thing above everything else. Never let them see you flinch. Tonight was supposed to change everything. I had told myself that three times already and I told myself again. Tonight was the beginning. Tonight I stopped being the Alpha's broken daughter and became something else entirely. I had imagined it a hundred times. The way Rowan would look at me when I reached the altar. The way the pack would finally have to see me as more than the girl who never shifted. I had let myself want this, which was something I did not do easily, and tonight I was finally here. "The earrings." Elara pressed them into my palm. Silver. Hers, not mine, because she said they caught light better. "Take them." "I will give them back tonight." "I know you will." She looked at me in the mirror one last time. "You look like someone worth fighting for, Lyra." I believed her. That was the part that would hurt most later. The bonding fire crackled at the center of the clearing, fed by sacred wood that only burned during ceremonies. The smell of it, cedar and pine resin and something older that had no name, wrapped around me as I walked the stone path toward the altar. Torches lined both sides of the ceremonial ground, hundreds of them, burning so bright they turned the night into something that almost looked like celebration. The whole pack had gathered. Elders in their dark robes. Warriors standing at attention along the tree line. Children perched on their fathers' shoulders just to get a better view. All of them watching me. I kept my chin up. Kept my hands still at my sides. I looked for Rowan before I could stop myself. He stood near the altar with Beta Cade and two senior warriors, his dark hair pulled back, his jaw sharp in the firelight. He was beautiful in a way that still made me feel ridiculous after years of standing next to him. When his eyes found mine across the crowd he smiled, and I felt the last of my nerves settle. He was here. He was waiting. Everything was fine. Elder Crane stepped forward and raised his hands for silence. The crowd obeyed instantly, that eerie quiet that only a wolf pack could produce, hundreds of people going still at once like they shared a single heartbeat. "We gather beneath the moon," Crane began, his voice carrying across the clearing without effort, "to witness the sacred bonding of Lyra Valen and Rowan Ashford, united before the pack and the moon goddess—" He did not finish. "Stop." The word cut through the ceremony like a blade through skin. I turned. Elder Vaskel was standing at the edge of the crowd, one arm raised, one finger pointed directly at me. He was old, the oldest of the council, and his face carried a cruelty that had been around long enough to start calling itself wisdom. "This ceremony cannot proceed," he said. The silence broke into murmuring. I heard my name travel through the crowd in pieces, passed from mouth to mouth until it sounded like an accusation on its own. My heart dropped somewhere below my ribs. But I kept my face still. I had practice with that. "Elder Vaskel." Elder Crane's voice was careful. "This is not the time." "She has been meeting with outsiders." Vaskel moved forward and two warriors followed, carrying something between them. A wooden box. "Letters were found. Sealed with the mark of the Rogue Territories. Correspondence detailing our border patrol schedules, our defense formations, our weakest entry points." He stopped three feet from me and his eyes were flat. "All written in her hand." The murmuring turned into something louder. My legs went cold from the knees down. "That is a lie." My voice came out steadier than I felt. I was grateful for that, at least. "I have never written to anyone outside this pack." "The letters are here." He gestured to the box. "Dated. Signed. Your seal pressed into each one." "Then someone forged them." "Of course you would say that," Vaskel said, and he smiled, and it was the worst thing I had ever seen. The crowd was fully alive now, voices layering over each other. I caught fragments. Traitor. Knew it. Always something wrong with her. The wolf that never shifted. Should have known. I stood in the middle of it and I breathed and I told myself there was an explanation. There was always an explanation. Rowan would speak. My father would speak. Someone would say wait and the truth would climb back to the surface the way truth was supposed to. I looked at my father. Alpha Darius stood at the far edge of the clearing, flanked by his personal guard, his face carved into something I could not read. He was looking at me. He was not moving. He was not speaking. He was not defending me. Something in my chest came apart quietly. I turned back to the crowd and I looked for Elara instead, because Elara would be furious. Elara would be pushing through the crowd already, telling them all exactly where they could take their accusations. That was who she was. That was who she had always been to me. I found her face near the front. She was standing very still, arms crossed, and when her eyes met mine I saw it. Not relief. Not coldness. Something worse than both. Her face was doing the thing people do when they are fighting themselves from the inside, jaw tight, eyes too bright, mouth pressed into a line that was holding something back by sheer force. She looked at me the way you look at someone you have already hurt and cannot stop hurting. She knew. She had always known. "Rowan." His name came out of me differently than it ever had. Scraped. "Tell them." He uncrossed his arms. Took one step forward. The fire threw shadows across the lines of his face. "I tried to protect you," he said. His voice was quiet enough that the crowd leaned in. "I told myself I was wrong about what I saw. That you would never do it." He exhaled slowly. "But I was there, Lyra. I saw you with him. The man from the Rogue border. I saw you hand him something." The sound that came out of me was not a word. "I cannot bond with a woman who has betrayed her own people." He said it simply, the way you state a fact about the weather. "I am sorry." Then he looked past me. He looked at Elara. And Elara moved forward, crossing the ground between them like she had been rehearsing it. Rowan's hand came up and settled at the small of her back and the gesture was so practiced, so unbothered, that it had clearly happened a thousand times before. In private. In rooms I had never been invited into. In the years I spent trusting them both with everything I had. The crowd's noise became a roar. Someone threw something. I heard it hit the ground near my feet. I was not thinking about Vaskel anymore. I was not thinking about the letters or the pack or the crowd. I was thinking about this morning. Elara's hands on the buttons of my dress. The silver earrings she pressed into my palm. "You look like someone worth fighting for, Lyra." She had said that knowing what was going to happen tonight. A hand closed around my arm. Hard. I was turned before I could resist and found myself looking at two of my father's guards. Not the ones who usually walked beside me. The ones who stood outside the cells beneath the Alpha house. "Don't make it worse," one of them said quietly. I stopped fighting. There was nothing left to fight for. My father finally spoke. His voice carried the way it always did, the Alpha command underneath every word, the sound that made the pack go still. "The bonding is dissolved," he said. "The girl will be dealt with." The girl. Not his daughter. Not Lyra. The girl. They locked me in a room I had never been in before. One chair. One window. No handle on the inside of the door. I sat down. I stared at the wall. I did not cry because crying felt like agreeing with all of them, and I was not ready to do that yet.
