Chapter 5: The Unraveling

1182 Words
Lila didn’t sleep that night. The events of the past few days replayed in her mind like a broken record—the spilled coffee, Damien’s sudden and bizarre job offer, the overwhelming move to his penthouse, and now this gala where strangers whispered her name like a secret everyone knew but her. Damien had kept her close since the moment he entered her life, but for reasons that had nothing to do with her skills or their so-called professional arrangement. She’d tried to ignore the tension between them, but now, after Veronica and Alexander’s cryptic warnings, she couldn’t. Lila sat in the dark, staring at the glittering city skyline outside her bedroom window. Her stomach churned with unanswered questions. Who was she to Damien? And why did he care so much about keeping her under his control? No more half-truths, she thought. I’m going to get answers. The Morning After Lila had barely stepped into the kitchen the next morning when she saw Damien seated at the breakfast table, a steaming cup of coffee in hand. He didn’t look up as she entered, but the tension in his posture told her he knew she was there. “Good morning,” Damien said finally, his voice clipped. “Is it?” Lila snapped, crossing her arms. Damien sighed, setting his coffee cup down with deliberate precision. “You’re still upset.” “You think?” she said, her tone biting. “You dragged me into this gala, paraded me around like some kind of trophy, and then refused to explain anything. Veronica, Alexander, your father—everyone seems to know more about my life than I do!” Damien’s eyes darkened, his calm façade slipping. “Lila, you don’t understand—” “Then make me understand!” she interrupted, slamming her hands on the table. “I’m tired of being kept in the dark, Damien. What are you hiding from me?” For a moment, he said nothing. Then, slowly, he stood, his towering frame casting a shadow over her. “Fine,” he said, his voice low. “You want the truth? Follow me.” A Glimpse of the Past Damien led her into his private study, a room she’d never entered before. It was surprisingly personal compared to the rest of the penthouse—dark wood shelves lined with books, framed photographs on the desk, and a faint scent of leather and cedar. He gestured to a chair, but Lila refused to sit. “Talk,” she demanded. Damien sighed, rubbing a hand over his face. For the first time since she’d met him, he looked… vulnerable. “Years ago,” he began, “my father married your mother.” The words hung in the air, heavy and unspoken until now. “I know that much,” Lila said coldly. “What does that have to do with me?” “My father… wasn’t a good man,” Damien admitted, his voice tight. “He used people. Manipulated them. Your mother was no exception.” Lila’s chest tightened. She’d always known her mother’s relationship with Charles Cross had been brief and complicated, but hearing it from Damien made it feel raw. “After their divorce, your mother left without asking for a penny,” Damien continued. “She didn’t want to be part of his world anymore. But that didn’t stop him from keeping tabs on you.” Lila frowned. “Why would he care about me?” “Because you’re his only loose end,” Damien said bluntly. “His reputation, his legacy—it’s all tied to you. If the wrong people found out about your connection to the Cross family, it could ruin everything he built. And by extension, everything I’ve built.” The admission sent a chill down her spine. “So… what? You’re here to keep me quiet? Is that why you hired me?” “At first, yes,” Damien admitted, his voice low. Lila recoiled as if he’d slapped her. “Unbelievable.” “But things changed,” he said quickly, stepping closer. “You’re not what I expected, Lila. You’re…” He trailed off, his gray eyes softening in a way that made her heart ache. “I’m what?” she pressed, her voice trembling. Damien hesitated, his jaw clenching as he wrestled with the words. “You’re more than just a threat to me. You’re…” “Damien,” she interrupted, her tone sharp. “Don’t. Don’t do this. Don’t make this personal when all I’ve been to you is a problem to fix.” “That’s not true,” Damien said, his voice rising. “You’re not a problem, Lila. You’re—” “Enough!” she shouted, tears stinging her eyes. “You’ve lied to me since the moment we met. How am I supposed to trust anything you say now?” Damien looked stricken, but before he could respond, the door to the study burst open. “Am I interrupting something?” Lila spun around to see Alexander standing in the doorway, his usual smirk firmly in place. “How did you get in here?” Damien growled, his expression hardening. “Security’s not as tight as you think,” Alexander replied, sauntering into the room. “But we can discuss that later. Right now, I’m here for her.” “What are you talking about?” Lila asked, backing away from him. “You deserve to know the whole story,” Alexander said, ignoring Damien’s furious glare. “And Damien here isn’t going to give it to you.” “Get out,” Damien snapped, stepping between them. “No,” Alexander said firmly. “You’ve had your chance to control her, Damien. Now it’s my turn.” Lila’s head spun as the two men squared off, their tension palpable. “Both of you, stop!” she shouted, her voice cracking. “I’m not some pawn for you to fight over!” Neither of them moved, their gazes locked in a silent battle. “Lila,” Alexander said finally, his voice softer. “If you want answers—real answers—you’ll come with me. Damien’s not going to tell you the whole truth. He can’t.” “That’s enough,” Damien growled, his fists clenched. Lila’s heart raced as she looked between them. Alexander’s words were tempting, but there was something in Damien’s eyes—desperation, fear—that made her hesitate. “Why should I trust either of you?” she asked, her voice shaking. Neither man had an answer. Lila took a deep breath, steadying herself. “I need time to think. And I need space. From both of you.” “Lila—” Damien began, but she cut him off. “No,” she said firmly. “I’m done being caught in the middle of whatever this is. If either of you actually care about me, you’ll respect that.” Without waiting for a response, she turned and walked out of the study, her heart pounding as she left both men behind.
