Chapter 1: The Contract
Lila Henderson believed her life couldn’t get worse—until it did. Her alarm didn’t go off, the subway was late, and by the time she stumbled into the small café where she worked, her manager was already glaring at her from behind the counter. “You’re late. Again,” he snapped, tapping the register impatiently. “I know, I know,” Lila mumbled, tossing her bag under the counter and tying on her apron. “It won’t happen again.” “It better not,” he grumbled. “We’ve got a packed morning, and I’m not covering for you.” The café was buzzing, filled with customers in sharp suits and tired faces clutching their phones. Lila hustled to catch up, weaving between tables with a tray of drinks balanced in one hand. Everything was going fine—until it wasn’t. A man stepped into her path just as she turned toward a corner table. The tray wobbled, and before she could stop it, a large cup of steaming coffee tilted over the edge. It hit him square in the chest. “Oh my God!” Lila gasped, her heart plummeting. She dropped the tray and grabbed a handful of napkins, trying to blot the spreading stain. “I am so, so sorry! I didn’t see you—” “Clearly,” the man said, his voice cutting through her apologies like a knife. He was tall and broad-shouldered, his sharp features marred only by the rage simmering in his cold, gray eyes. His suit—charcoal gray and obviously expensive—was ruined, coffee dripping down the fabric in dark streaks. “I—I can pay for the dry cleaning,” Lila stammered, feeling like a rabbit cornered by a wolf. The man didn’t even flinch. “Do you have any idea what you’ve just done?” “It was an accident!” she said, panic rising. “I’ll fix it, I swear.” “You think this is about coffee?” His voice was low, almost amused, but there was no humor in his expression. “Do you even know who I am?” Lila blinked, thrown off by the sudden question. “No?” He leaned in slightly, his presence so overwhelming that she instinctively stepped back. “Damien Cross.” Her stomach dropped. Everyone knew Damien Cross. Billionaire CEO of Cross Global Enterprises. A man with a reputation for being ruthless, untouchable, and cold as ice. Lila stared, struggling to find words. “I… I didn’t realize…” “Of course you didn’t,” he said sharply. “People like you never do.” She didn’t even have time to be offended before her manager appeared, practically falling over himself to grovel. “Mr. Cross, I am so sorry about this,” he said, shooting Lila a glare. “This is completely unacceptable—” “It’s not her fault,” Lila tried to interject, but her manager ignored her. “She’s clumsy,” he continued, “and careless. I’ll handle it right away.” Damien waved a hand dismissively, his gaze never leaving Lila. “See that you do.” Her chest tightened as the manager turned to her, his expression hard. “You’re fired,” he said flatly. Lila froze. “What?” “You heard me. Get your things and go.” “I—this is insane!” she protested, but one look at Damien’s icy expression told her there was no point. She left the café in a daze, her hands trembling as she stuffed her apron into her bag. Outside, the rain had started, a cold drizzle soaking her hair and clothes as she walked back to her tiny apartment. By the time she reached home, anger had replaced the shock. She paced the floor, replaying the encounter in her mind. “That arrogant bastard,” she muttered. “Who does he think he is?” But the universe wasn’t done with her yet. The next morning, a sharp knock at her door jolted her awake. Still groggy, she shuffled to the door and opened it to find two men in black suits standing on her porch. “Miss Henderson?” one of them asked, his tone brisk and professional. “Uh… yes?” she said, suddenly wide awake. “Mr. Cross requests your presence.” Her heart sank. “What? Why?” The man ignored her question, holding out a sleek black envelope. She took it reluctantly, her fingers shaking as she tore it open. Inside was a single piece of paper with Damien Cross’s name at the top and a short, chilling message: “You owe me. 10:00 AM. My office.” “What the hell is this?” she demanded, but the men were already turning to leave. “The car is waiting,” one of them said over his shoulder. The sleek black car wound through the city streets as Lila sat stiffly in the back, gripping the envelope like a lifeline. This couldn’t be happening. She had nothing to do with Damien Cross. Nothing! The coffee incident was an accident—surely he couldn’t still be mad about that. The car pulled up to a gleaming skyscraper, and Lila’s stomach twisted. She was ushered through security and into a private elevator, which shot to the top floor in seconds. When the doors opened, she found herself in an office that looked more like a throne room. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the city, and the minimalist black-and-white décor screamed power and wealth. Damien was standing by the windows, his back to her. He didn’t turn when she stepped inside. “Miss Henderson,” he said, his voice as cold and precise as she remembered. “Mr. Cross,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady. He finally turned, his gray eyes locking onto hers. “You owe me.” “For what?” she asked, her anger bubbling to the surface. “It was just coffee!” His lips curved into a faint, humorless smile. “You think this is about coffee?” “Isn’t it?” “No.” He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. “It’s about consequences. And control. Two things you clearly don’t understand.” Lila’s heart pounded as she struggled to hold his gaze. “I don’t owe you anything.” “On the contrary,” Damien said smoothly. “You owe me more than you realize. And I always collect.” Before she could respond, he walked to his desk and picked up a folder, tossing it onto the glass surface in front of her. “What’s this?” she asked warily. “Your new contract,” he said simply. She blinked, confused. “What?” “You’re going to work for me,” Damien said, his tone leaving no room for argument. “As my personal assistant.” Lila stared at him, dumbfounded. “You’re joking.” “Do I look like I’m joking?” Her pulse quickened. “Why would I even agree to this?” “Because refusing would be… unwise,” he said, his voice dropping to a near-whisper. Lila’s mind raced. This was insane. Completely insane. But the look in Damien’s eyes told her he wasn’t asking. “Fine,” she said finally, her voice trembling. “I’ll do it.” “Smart choice,” Damien said, his smirk returning. “Welcome to my world, Miss Henderson.”
