Anna
I was playing catch with Caleb while Melina was helping Isla try to walk. I saw her chubby little legs pumping against the grass and then she was down.
“I want a baby, have a baby with me bestie!” Jer came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. Caleb looked at us and then started laughing.
“That is not going to work, Auntie Jer, you were better off asking Auntie Melina. I don’t think Uncle Sully would want to share.” I gawped at Caleb, he shrugged and ran off.
“Did that kid just c**k block me?” I was chuckling and sat down with Jer.
He was looking at baby Isla with longing and sadness. I didn’t know he was at this stage in his life. It is to be expected, but honestly, Jer never struck me as the maternal type.
“What about adoption?” If he wanted me to be a surrogate mother I would, it would be awkward, and ever since I lost the other child I have wondered if I am able to have children. I know losing that child was a fluke, but what if there was something seriously wrong with my body?
“I wanted to talk to Daniel about it but, I may end up being a single mom.” I rolled my eyes.
“Why did you two fight?” I glanced over at him and he looked deep in thought.
“I don’t even remember now.” I sighed and shook my head.
“Then maybe you should call him and apologize.”
“Maybe you should get back in the saddle again.”
“Touche. To be honest, I think Baba is getting enough saddle time for all of us.” I saw Jer shudder and giggled to myself.
“Seriously though, call your husband and apologize.” He sighed, sitting up. He walked off and I hoped he was going to call Daniel and apologize.
It was probably because Mack was there on their honeymoon and I didn’t blame him for being sore.
I needed to go check on Sully though. He had been depressed and withdrawn since we came back from his parent’s house. I didn’t blame him because that woman was insufferable.
The last time I saw him he was in the stables, Baba had bought a new horse for Caleb. I told her the horse was too big for him, so she bought him a pony. The horse was a rescue and she was really skittish. Baba assured me that by the time Caleb could ride the horse she would be “nicer”.
I pushed open the doors to the stable and saw Sully sitting on a haybale staring into space. I sat down next to him and put my hand on his leg.
“Hey, I wanted to see how you were doing?” I felt horrible. I should have punched the woman in the face. I really should have punched Dahlia in the face too.
“I wish I knew why she doesn’t love me as much as Gregor. Even my sisters are treated somewhat better. Is it because I’m disgusting?” He was really worried about this. I hated seeing him so broken, and why the hell would he think he is disgusting?
“Umm first, I don’t think that woman is capable of love. She is probably like a reptile and hatches eggs.” He chuckled and I leaned in and pulled him closer and he lay his head in my lap like Caleb does.
“Do you think I’m disgusting?” He was looking up at me with those Mackenzie eyes and my heart broke some more.
“Unless you farted on my pillows or did something nasty like that, I don’t find you disgusting. Why do you keep asking that?” He closed his eyes and let out a deep breath. Whatever has been plaguing him, seems to be taking its toll on him.
“That is disgusting, but nothing like that. I am bisexual.” I continued to stroke his hair as the silence weighed between us. I looked down at him and he gave me a pained smile.
“Oh, that is the big secret. I mean I had my suspicions about the way you carry on with Jer, but then again, Jer has that effect on people and just sucks them into his vortex of drama.” I laughed and tried to lighten the mood, but this was still bugging him.
“Look, I don’t care if you are bisexual, I don’t care what you are as long as you are kind, don’t harm people, animals, and children. Your mother is a b***h, I apologize for that.” He sat up and brushed his hair out of his face.
“You really don’t think I am gross? You don’t think I’m an abomination?” I sucked in a sharp breath, is that what this woman has been telling him all these years?
I didn’t get a chance to say anything, the dogs started barking and we heard the sound of brakes squeaking. Whoever was out there was not someone that was welcome, the dogs wouldn’t keep barking like that.
Giving Sully’s hand a squeeze, I stood up and wandered out of the stable to see a Mercedes parked by the front steps of the house and Sully’s mother. What did this b***h want now?
“This heifer is on my turf now, Sully. I don’t want to make things worse for you and, hopefully, one day you can mend your relationship. I will toss her out on her ass though if she starts anything.” My ghetto queen was coming out and Sully’s eyes went wide as I stalked over to the car.
I stood by the driver’s side with my arms crossed glaring at the woman in the vehicle.
“Could ye call yer bests off? I would like to have a chat with ye.” I narrowed my eyes at her but whistled for Angus and Magnus to back off.
She stepped out of the car and wrinkled her nose in disgust. OK, if she was going to be like this she could hop right back on her broomstick and fly on out of here.
“This is unexpected, it is nice.” The way Caroline Mackenzie said nice made it seem as if I were living in a city dump.
“Please don’t expect me to be polite, Mrs. Mackenzie, after that horrible display at lunch.” I left the words hanging there. She lifted her chin and sniffed with indignation.
“I will not apologize for how I talk to my husband’s bastard children.” I blinked, what was her problem?
“Now can we go inside and talk?” I chewed on my lip and continued to stare at her.
Part of me wanted to tell her no, but Baba opened the front door and there was hellfire in her eyes.
“Ah, Anna dear, who is this?” Judging by that nasty look in her eyes, she knew who it was.
“I am Caroline Mackenzie and I was hoping to chat with Anna here.” Caroline smiled and walked towards Baba; I flinched as the old woman made her way down the steps a syrupy sweet smile plastered on her face.
“Oh, of course, so pleased to meet you and come in. I am sure we all have lots to chat about.” Caroline shot a triumphant smirk over her shoulder and followed Baba into the house.
Someone let out a whistle next to me and I jumped as Cassius seemed to appear out of nowhere, he was watching the show with narrowed eyes.
“I think we should both go in there and make sure Baba doesn’t feed the hag to your pigs. It has happened before.” I stared at him, and he looked dead serious.
“You’re joking, right?” He grabbed my hand and we hurried into the house.
He WAS joking? Right?
