Dahlia
I knew people like Caroline Mackenzie, they always had secrets and I would find out what her secrets were. I was a human being, there was no reason for her to treat me this way. I was a doctor and I helped people like her with narcissistic disorder on a daily basis.
Right now, I have to deal with the person at the other end of the phone. This was not the best time for dealing with a work emergency. I told my secretary that I would be unable to accept any calls this weekend.
“I’m not sure how you managed to get a hold of me but I did tell my receptionist that I was busy this weekend.” There was a girlish giggle on the other end of the phone and the sound of horns blaring in the background.
“Dahlia, don’t be that way, we are family.” I looked around to see if anyone was around and saw Maisie coming out of the house. She gave me an annoyed look and then dug around in her purse.
“Hang on a minute please.” I held the phone to my chest and stared at her. She really thought she was going to marry Gregor Mackenzie? I wanted to laugh in her face, but I was the bigger woman here and decided to take the high ground.
“I would like to apologise on behalf of meself and Caroline Mackenzie. Here is mah card and I would like to have lunch with ye sometime. If ye plan on being in me husband’s life as his mistress, then there is no reason, we shouldna be friends.” She handed a card to me and then walked to her Rolls Royce where a man pulled her door open.
She waved to me as she was driven off the premises. I was seething, how dare she even think I would want to sit down and have lunch with her? She thinks I am Gregor’s mistress!
I took a minute to compose myself before I started talking on the phone again. I hoped that they didn’t hear what happened.
I put the phone up to my ear and there was laughing and I knew they had heard what happened. There was no denying that this was going to be a phone call that I was going to regret later.
“What do you want?”
“Oh, come on Dahlia, I have you to thank for my little excursion and operation. We are now living in the skin we are comfortable with.” I rubbed my temples and sat down.
“Do you need more money? Now is not the best time Sebastian?” There was the sound of more giggling and I was wondering when the hormone treatments were going to help with their voice.
“Why, yes, more money would be great. However, I want to come back to Scotland. I think it is time.” Dread filled me. There was no way they were going to come back to this country.
“You know that is not possible. Your lawyer and I both agreed that it would be best for you to stay in rehab in the States.”
“Ah, but I bet you are having some Gregor problems, aren’t you? I can help you with that problem, dear cousin of mine.” My pulse was pounding and I was going to be sick.
“Again, Sebastian, the terms of your sentence are that you are to remain in the States. There is nothing I can do about that. I need to go if there is no real emergency, then schedule an appointment with my secretary.” I was getting ready to hit the end button when I heard their sinister chuckles again.
“Oh Dahlia, I have been let out on good behavior. I thought I should let you know. Ta ta babycakes.” I jumped as Gregor put his hands on my shoulders. I turned around and he was staring at me with worry.
“About me mother…” I buried my face in his chest and wrapped my arms around him. I just wanted him to comfort me.
“I don’t want to talk about her, Gregor.” He brushed his rough fingers across my face and peered down into my eyes.
“What is wrong? Did Maisie say something to ye?” I coughed and shook my head. Maisie was the least of my problems.
“No, I just had a call from a patient. It was disturbing, to say the least. After the call and the drama of today, I just want to go home.” I buried my face in his chest and he hugged me close again.
“OK, we can go home; I am ready for it as well.” He sounded as tired and worn out as I felt.
He must never know about Sebastian though. That was a secret that I would keep until death.
