When someone pushed against my body, I let out a small, dangerous growl and tried to keep sleeping. But someone hit me harder, and I jumped up and barked at the person.
A big gray and silver wolf stood in front of me and looked at me with amused eyes. When I realized it was that wolf, I got hot.
Hi, Roland.
He laughed when I asked him through the link, "What do you want?"
"Your mom was worried, so I came to find you. I smelled your scent here," he said, pointing to a new tank top and jean shorts next to his paw.
He said, "Shift." I really wanted to roll my eyes, but I resisted the urge and instead took the clothes in my mouth, hid behind a big oak tree, and changed into a person while putting on the clothes.
I came out from behind the tree. Roland was standing there in long black pants, letting everyone see his chest.
I tried to look away from the site, but I just couldn't.
Roland called my name and snapped his fingers in my face, waking me up from my trance. "Kimberly? Hello."
When did he get so close?
"Uh...s-sorry....Let's just um...y-yeah," I stuttered. I turned around to go home, but Roland grabbed my hand, sending tingles up my arm.
"Kimberly," Roland whispered as he leaned his head back and showed his long teeth.
I was pinned down against the soft forest floor with Roland on top of me in the blink of an eye.
He whispered, "You smell so good," against my neck and then kissed it, which made me groan with pleasure.
His teeth scraped against my neck, right where my mate's mark would be.
He pushed himself off of me all of a sudden, as if I had burned him. When I looked up, Roland was pinching the bridge of his nose.
"Getting ready for the party, let's go," he said as he began to walk toward my house.
What the heck was that?

I quickly got out of the shower and went to my room.
When I looked at the time, I saw that I only had about 30 minutes left until 12:00, which meant it was my birthday, the party would start, and I would find out who my mate is.
I was eager to find my true love and end my feelings for Roland for good. It was getting too much. It's weird, but I was able to ignore it—no, avoid it for two years. But now I can't. It's too much, and I can see myself giving up and doing something I'll feel bad about.
I put on my bra and pants without thinking about whether they went together or not. Then I looked through my clothes for an outfit.
It's going to take a while.
Twenty minutes later, I looked at my outfit again in the mirror and nodded to say that it was fine.
Dress: A black midi dress that came just above my knees. Accessories: Black studs, 5in black heels, and two gold bracelets for each hand.
Not really into dresses, even though I have a lot of them, I never wear them because they're so difficult and annoying to walk in.
I put on some perfume, grabbed my phone, and put it in my bag. Then I left my room and went downstairs.
The party took place outside because my house didn't have enough space for my pack and two other packs. Think about how messy that would be.
I was afraid to open the front door as I stood in front of it.
The wall clock told me what time it was.
The time is 12 minutes away.
It would be too mild to say I wasn't calm. Seeing my partner for the first time, if I can even find him. I'm pretty sure he's here. My wolf side feels stronger than my human side, which tells me that my mate is here with me tonight.
Does he like me? I really hope so. I don't think I could handle being turned down.

Girl, take a deep breath. You don't need to be scared.

This is what you've been waiting for a long time.

Don't forget...

In the event that something goes wrong tonight. Mate or no mate, or chosen or not chosen.
I'm not going to run away or give up.

As soon as I opened the front door, I saw a huge group of happy people.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY Kimberly!"
With a smile on my face, I ran into the crowd of people and tried to give them a group hug, but my small arms made it impossible.
I heard someone behind me say, "Happy birthday, sweetie." When I turned around, I saw my mom crying.
I said, "Thank you, mommy," and then I walked over to her and gave her a big hug.
When I moved away, I said, "This party looks awesome."
"I'm glad you like it, Dani. It took some work, but you know I'll do anything for you. I was just thinking..." Mom said with a sad smile as tears that she had been holding back fell down her face.
"Your dad would be so proud to see you right now," she said finally, and then she started to cry.
I added with sadness, "I know...I miss him too." Then I quickly blinked my tears away.
I thought about Daddy and what life would be like without him every day.
In that case, Mom would be with her true love, and we'd be a real family instead of Roland being here and me having these terrible f-- Wait, where is Roland?
Mom winked at "mate" and said, "I'll be back in a bit, sweetie. Don't worry about me; I'm going to clean up and be down soon. Go have fun. Find your mate." I blushed.
Since I could no longer strongly feel my mate, I think he moved to the other side of the yard. I'm sure he's still here; I can feel it, even if it's not strong.
I was excited to find my partner and have fun at the party, but I couldn't help but think about Roland. He wasn't in the house when I came out, so I haven't seen him yet.
What do you know? I'm going to have a great time tonight because it's my night.
* * *
It was 3 a.m., and most of the people here were either so drunk I couldn't understand them or asleep in my house.
It's strange that my mom hasn't turned it off yet. Whenever she plans a party, she usually ends it before it gets too messy. My yard looks like a bunch of crack heads live here right now. I'm not even joking when I say that werewolves like to party a lot.
I haven't found my mate yet, but I can tell he's close because my wolf is moving around.
You see, to know who your mate is, you have to look at each other or touch. But both people must be at least 18 years old to feel the pull.
Wouldn't it be funny to have your partner right in front of you every day and not know it until you're 18? Isn't that crazy?
There were times when I felt angry. At one point, I even thought about walking around until I found him and running into every man I see. But that would take hours.
Someone I know, Mellisa, came up to me and asked, "Having fun, Missy?" It's clear she's drunk as hell because she's even talking to me. In fact, the only time I've ever typed or talked to her is when she asks me for help with her homework in class.
"Yes," was my short answer. Then she walked—no, she stumbled—away into the arms of her partner, Ollie Payne, who I also knew. Unfortunately, Ollie wasn't all bad; he's a good person. But I'm not good at making friends, so I stick to my "Hi, hello" routine and then I forget about you.
(This is how I really am in real life; I'm so antisocial!)
I looked through the huge group of drunk dogs for my mate but couldn't find her.
How the hell hard is it to find one person?
In the end, my thoughts went back to Roland. The jerk might not be my favorite.
person, but damn, I need to wish him a happy birthday.
I took a deep breath and tried to pick out Roland's smell from the many that were around me. It took me a moment to get it, but it led me to the house. I left him alone because I thought he might be getting more drinks or something.
I almost jumped when the DJ yelled "Okay, y'all" into the mic.
"Guys grab a lady, ladies grab a man and lemme see you wolves out there....get down to this."
There was a song by Rita Ora and Chris Brown called "Body On Me." It made me feel full of energy.
This made me want to dance.
I moved my hips back and forth as I made my way to the group of wolves who were dancing with their partners or just with each other.
A deep voice whispered in my ear, "Can I have this dance, birthday girl?"
I wasn't sure at first, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to dance for a while since I haven't found my partner yet. It's my birthday, so I should really enjoy myself.
As I pulled the person closer to me, I grabbed their arm.
As I pressed my lower body against him, I felt him push back against me. Our actions were in sync.
I laughed as the guy whispered in my ear, "You can dance."
As I continued my grind, I replied, "You'd be surprised."
As the guy was being pulled away from me quickly, he was cut off. "Do you-" I turned around very quickly to see who had taken him off, and as soon as I looked at the stranger, my whole world fell apart.
Roland turned his attention away from us and glared at the guy I was dancing with. I knew him as the Beta of one of the packs that came to my party.
I was shocked as Roland slammed the door behind him as he ran into the house.
I was so angry that I swear I could see red.
This son of a b***h is crazy!
"Sorry, my stepdad is a little too protective. I'm going to talk to him now. Have fun, and maybe find your mate," I said with a wink. He laughed and nodded.
I stomped over to the house, opened the door, and then shut it again.
I yelled, "Roland!" Outside it was loud, and since almost all of the wolves here are drunk, their high alertness is likely to be a little off.
I tracked his smell to the guest bedroom upstairs since he hadn't replied.
"Dammit!" I heard him yell from the room as I climbed the stairs. This was followed by the sound of something breaking.
What the heck? Is he crazy? There's no reason for this jerk to be so angry.
I took a few deep breaths to calm down, then pushed open the room door and didn't look at the mess on the floor.
He didn't answer, so I asked, "You knew, didn't you?"
Roland paced the room and talked to himself while avoiding eye contact with me.
I called his name again because he wasn't answering, "Roland." Still no answer. It made me very angry, and my claws got longer because of it.
I yelled, "ROLAND!" and he snapped his head around to face me. He looked me straight in the eyes, and the pull from our bond was clear.
"WHY THE F*CK DIDN'T YOU TELL ME YOU WERE MY MATE?"
